  Becoming a successful youth in Algeria is something that very few people believe in, even youththemselves are not very optimistic concerning this issue. It seems that the Algerian road to success is full ofobstacles, being the reason why so many dreams evaporate over the years and the dreamers nd themselvescarrying on life with a deep down cry. Some of them relate their failure to external conditions, i.e. the soci-ety and all its components, and few acknowledge that they defeated themselves the moment they gave up.Avoiding similar scenarios to today’s Algerian youth is not impossible if the social platform and the youth’s

determination take place coupled with the political will.

  It is estimated that 70 per cent of the Algerian population is less than 30 years old, which is considereda positive indicator especially that youthfulness is globally considered a force that can contribute eectivelyin the economic development of a country. Nowadays some developed countries in Europe and Asia, such asGermany and Japan, are suering from the outnumbering of old people, and their governments are raisingconcerns about their future working force.

However, countries with high percentages of young people such as Algeria suer on their part fromthe mismanagement of this force. Problems of unemployment and legal/illegal immigration are the top chal-lenges that Algeria is facing when it comes to its youth. By recognizing the raising upset within Algerian

young people; Algerian decision makers have translated their attempt to mend the problems of this categorythrough a number of ministries. Among these ministries we nd: the Ministry of National Education, theMinistry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Professional Formation, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, theMinistry of Work, the Ministry of Solidarity and the Ministry of Culture.

It is true somehow that the contribution of the pervious ministries has paid o especially concerningthe rate of unemployment; it declined from 21.4 to 15.2 per cent between 2010 and 2012, and is predictedto further decline in the coming years, particularly within diploma holders. But still political decisions cannotact alone; a healthy social environment is necessary for the Algerian youth to explore their capacities. Oneimportant principle that should be embraced is trust mingled with appreciation between generations. It iscommonly heard in our society that the old generation does not trust the young one neither the young gen-

eration appreciates the old one. Therefore, such mentality will never push Algerian youth and Algeria forward.The old generation still thinks that young people are irresponsible and doubts their capacities. This mentalityappears in excluding youth from playing a leading role in their society and preventing them from uncappingtheir potentials. By doing so, the old generation does not only claim that the rising generation is inexperi-enced; but also ignores that it is full of energy and hope which is enough to begin with. In fact, Algerian youthproved in many occasions that they can bring a positive change whenever they get the opportunity. Many ofthem, mainly the skilled ones, found it in western countries where they have greatly succeeded.It is also unfair to point the nger only at old people in discouraging Algerian youth, because a great portionof the discouragement is actually a result of the young generation itself. One major mistake that Algerianyouth make is under-estimating the orientation of old folks. They often react arrogantly and refuse to hearfrom the elders, owing to their claim that age does not count. One might interpret this position by referringto the enthusiastic spirit within young folks. But yet an enthusiastic spirit may take a negative direction by thismeaning. In addition to this, miscommunication is another aw that characterizes the majority of Algerianyouth. They are often either able to deliver their ideas or demonstrate their skills appropriately. Besides, theyshould get o the idea of getting everything instantaneously, because success is in actual fact, a long hard journey wherever the person goes, and nothing comes on a silver platter unless the concerned person is ason or a daughter of a king.

The path to fulll the Algerian dream starts with valuing the human aspect and investing in youth’scapacities. A mission that the whole society should contribute in from the simplest citizen, who sows a seedof hope in his/her children, to the most inuential hierarch that may someday face a tree of dreams, ready togive fruits.

Non StopActivities throughout theWeek The American Corner Constantine hosts a variety of activities, along the year, organized and presented

by Algerian teaching assistants and graduate students mainly from the department of English. The 2013-2014 schedule is quite rich, from Sunday to Thursday the ACC invites its adherents to take part in a choiceof activities and events. Here is a look inside the weeklong activities at the American Corner Constantine.

Monday

  Short Film CaféTime: From 11:00 to 13:00

Organized and presented by: Hadjer BIOUD  This activity consists on watching short lms from all around the world. The attendees of this activity areinvited to share their own interpretations concerning the projected lms. Short Film Café aims at creating

a space where the students discover a new kind of lms and develop their ability to analyze them from anartistic, technical and symbolic aspect.

Writing Center   Time: From 11:00 to 13:00

Organized and presented by: Djellal Tebib  The UC Writing Center (re), which was launched two years ago, organizes a wide range of workshops,games and activities such as: Alfresco Writing, Documentary-Based Writing and Cub Reporters to help

students enjoy writing. It also oers a few services at no charge, such us one-on-one tutoring and re-search assistance. The center aims to nurture a love for writing inside students, enhance their writing skillsand promote their learning autonomy.

Give & Take  Time: From 13:00 to 15:30

Organized and presented by: Khouloud MAADADI  This activity tends to make the participants move forward using their input and performing it as anoutput in various performances, for example: “dare or act”, “debates”, “ll in the gabs”, “mile in a minute”,“notebooks or vocabulary logs”, “talking psychology”, “mental thinking process” and “act/guess this out”.Besides, this activity involves the acquisition of new data by sharing experiences between the presenterand the participants. This class plays, indeed, an important role for the participants’ benets since they will

learn uent and accurate speaking cooperatively; this indicates speaking/listening skills devotion.

Be Positive!  Time : From 11:00 to 13:00

Organized and Presented by : Amel Tabbi“Be Positive! “is all about making the students aware of positive thoughts’ role in creating a positive rea-

lity which they will soon notice in their studies and lives as well. The activity aims at allowing the studentsto live the moment and put all their worries aside to spend 90 minutes inside a positive energy bubble,

in addition to practicing their English. It 6+ is going to include some reading, discussions, presentations,documentaries, games, etc.

Together We Thrive  Time : 12 am to 02:00 pm

Organized and presented by: Aaf ZemouliThe presenter of this activity believes that teaching is a two-ways process in which the teacher

 just like the learner has a lot to learn. This is, in fact, what the Together We Thrive activity is all about.Sharing their knowledge, interests, and experiences leads learners to be engaged and promotesactive learning. Not teacher fronted, Together We Thrive is an activity which invites the adherentsof the American Corner to experience public speaking through presenting subjects of their interestwith the assistance of the main speaker. The audience, in such an engaging environment, denitelybenets from the content of the presentation and the feedback of the main speaker.

Debating in a formal ecient manner is also a quality that we try to deliver throughthis session. Wilhelm Himbra when he visitedAlgeria in 1831. With the begin-nings o the French invasion in1830, education in Algeria washighly prosperous, thanks toscholars like Ibnabal in Con-stantine, Daoudi in elemcen,IbnHaa in Algiers and so manyother great people who dedicatedtheir lives to teaching all sorts oknowledge. In Constantine solely,there were 35 mosques used as ed-ucational centers and about 600 to900 students who attended aboutseven primary and secondaryschools, as shown by Dr.Demiriwho made several studies aboutthe Algerian liestyle during thenineteenth century. In simplerwords, that was the golden agethat IbnBadis, afer whom the day

o knowledge was set, wanted tobring back afer the destructioncaused by the French colonizer.

  16 April was officiallyratified as the day o knowledgein president Houari Boumedyen’sreign. Just as the 10th o Decem-ber o each year commemoratesthe death o Alred Nobel, 16th

April has been chosen to be Dayo the Knowledge in Algeria inmemory o the scholar IbnBadiswho was the leader o the Asso-

ciation o the Algerian MuslimScholars. It is worth mentioningthat the idea o celebrating theKnowledge Day appeared in June,1938 in Constantine. Te day inwhich the scholar Ibn Badis washonored by a bunch o scholars,students and even laymen or theefforts he made to interpret andexplain the holy Quran in a serieso lessons throughout a period otwenty five years. Ibn Badis diedin 16 April 1940, that is to say twoyears afer this huge ceremony.Tis had a tremendous effect onthe reorm movement which lostits spiritual leader. Hence, peo-

ple guided by leaders o Te As-sociation o the Algerian MuslimScholars have been celebratingsince then the 16T April o eachyear as the Knowledge Day. Tecelebrations were under the ormo Articles, poems, plays, con-erences and lectures about thegreat achievements the scholarIbn Badis made to bring back the

Algerian identity ,which includedIslam as a religion and Arabic asthe first language, to protect botho them against any distortion or

 violation. Not only Algeria glori-fied Ibn Badis’ efforts and achieve-ments, even unisia between1946 and 1955 used to celebratethe 16 April with poems like theone written by Mustapha Khari

ing Towards Us”

and articles in press like Elaabka-ria (the genius) Magazine and El-nahda ( Renaissance) newspaper.Ibn Badis’ achievements to main-taining the Algerian Arabic andIslamic identity need a lie to bedescribed. He said once:” Te Al-gerian nation is not France, can-not be France, and does not want

to be France. It cannot be Franceeven i it is willing to, or it is a na-tion that is very ar rom Francein its language, ethics, essenceand religion. It does not wantto be integrated, and it has spe-cific and known borders called,Algeria”. Here are some o theaccomplishments o Ibn Badis:First, once he graduated romZaytouna College in unisia, hestarted teaching voluntarily in El-

 jamie Elkebir(Te Great Mosque)and later in Eljamie Lakhder(TeGreen Mosque). He was a greatdevotee o education or all; oradults as or children, men and

women. Te latter were not al-lowed to education in schools bytradition and social belies. Yet,only in Ibn Badis’ time, parentsallowed their daughters to attendhis classes because they trustedhim. People at that time caredin the first place about the val-ues and reputation o the teacher,then his knowledge and o course

Ibn Badis was fit or both. Tiswas a tremendous change, hesaid: “to orm the men o tomor-row we need educated Muslimmothers” He also said that wom-en and men are the two wingswithout which the society cannotfly. It is also important to mentionthat he got the chance to teachand preach in the Mosque o theprophet Muhammad in Elmedi-na, Saudi Arabia, which was andstill is the dream o any scholar.However, IbnBadis was aware othe act that Algeria and mostimportantly the Algerian identitywas in need o him. So, he a-

 vored the nation’s benefits to hisown. An attribute o a great man!

  Second, the creation othe Association o Te AlgerianMuslim Scholars. It emergedfirst as the Islamic Association oeducation and science. It was incharge o teaching students thenecessary ethics and Islamic val-ues and provided education toAlgerian students who did not getthe chance to subscribe in schoolssponsored by the French govern-ment. Te association shoulderedalso responsibility or the care oorphans. In addition, they createdateliers or students to learn thedifferent handicrafs to acilitatetheir integration into the proes-sional lie. Tey even gave schol-

arships to students to study inIslamic universities so that theycould learn and came back toparticipate in the intellectual de-

 velopment o their country. 

Tird, almost all Ibn bad-is’ activities were related to Islamas the nation’s religion; however,this did not prevent him rom in-

tervening in politics. In 1939 withthe WW2; France strove to getsupport rom Algerian politicalassociations. Many o them ac-cepted but Ibn Badis and his As-sociation o the Algerian MuslimScholars reused. He was ready toresign as the leader o his associa-tion i its majority was or the con-scription o the Algerian youths to

a war that was not theirs. Besides,one o his most amous political views is what he said on the eve ohis death, he said:

 “ I swear to God,that if I found tenAlgerian scholarssupporting me to de-clare the war of inde-pendence right now,

I would do it”.

  Fourth, maybe one askshimsel, why such a scholar wouldnot write books. He actually sawthat raising the individual via di-rect contact like teaching is more

important and highly effective.Fifh, the Association o the Alge-rian Muslim Scholars establishedmagazines like ElBasaer, Elmon-takida and Elshihab in which heand the other members couldpublish translations, articles, aswell as analyses and studies omany Islamic books, in an at-tempt to raise public awareness.

So Ibn Badis took the leadin a very hard time and againsta very powerul enemy, andbrought back what had been lostor a century using knowledgeas a weapon. Tis great reorm-ist movement was as describedMalek Bennabi: “the miracle orevival has started, flowing romIbn Badis words. Tat was the mo-

ment o awakening at which theAlgerian people who were dopedstarted moving. And what’s abeautiul and blessed awakening”.  At the end, it is good to com-memorate this great scholar andreormist, yet, he would be moresatisfied i words o praise turnedinto actions. It is high time orthis generation to get the lesson

and so will do the next ones.

  When you consul tyour agenda in April, you’ll directly think about the16th of April which will take you in a sequence of thoughts, events and historicaldeeds. The 16th of April is an almost-sacred event in Algeria and particularlyin Constantine, simply because it is the “Knowledge Day”. In this great event,University Constantine 1 prepares every year diverse and eective programswhich include intellectual, cultural and sport activities. These eorts are for thepurpose of commemorating this day and passing message to the next gene-rations about knowledge history in Algeria, and how it had been the light inher dark days. This is why the responsible of the activities, named DASCS, havemade in the couple of years great eorts in planning and preparing for the16th of April. This set of activities has represented to a large extent the scientic,

technical and cultural level mainly of the University Constantine 1.

To begin with, University ofConstantine 1 is interested in thecultural activities in the rst placefor which a varied and full pro-gram has been planned. First, thisschedule has begun in the “Sed-dikYahia auditorium” with thecompetition of the best student-

poem written in Arabic wherethe students who have inscribedfor the competition set beforehave written the most creativeand beautiful piece of poem inArabic. Similar to that, there werealso competitions about the bestshort story, poster and drawingof the occasion. Furthermore, avisit to the military museum had

been paid in order to enrich thestudents’ cultural backgroundthrough explanations providedfor the students about the cultu-ral and historical content of thismuseum.

  In addition to the culturalactivities, there were also intel-lectual and professional onesthat have successfully aectedthe students’ experience. Suchthese events, the forum of thelegal and juridical professionswhich has taken place in “Tija-niHadam” with the participation

of juridical parts, administrationsand public bodies that havehelped the graduate students inlaw. The main goal of this eventwas to build a bridge between

the student and the profes-sional world through a seriesof courses and presentationsabout avariety of professionaloptions that helped the studentsin choosing what suits them themost. Another event which hasgained a great attendance is a

course in human development. Itaimed essentially at developingstudents’ intellectual and mentalcapacities as well as their per-

formance in both academic andsocial environment through acouple of presentations: the rstby Dr.Siham BOUSBIAAT aboutexcellence rules and positivechanging in “TijaniHadam”, andthe second by the international

trainer Mr.Shadi SABRI aboutthe quintet of personal successand human development in the“SeddikYahia auditorium”.

  Moreover, several sportactivities were set to completethe event’s programs and togive further vision on what thestudents can master out of thetheoretical domains. Such as,the Football Cup of the Univer-sity President between facul-ties, which is considered to bethe most important event forstudents. Also, a set of tourna-ments have been conductedabout Chess, Equestrian andeven Scrabble which were aunique and amazing experiencefor the student competitors.Besides that, there was anothermanifestation about Aeronau-

tics. Thanks to the “Vet-Waveclub”, two days of remarkablemanifestation were taking placein the “SeddikYahia auditorium”for the academic theoretical

part, and in the university spacefor the practical part. Coursesand presentations have been hi-ghly aective and helpful for thestudents of this eld which madethem extremely satised.

To conclude, the fact of beingin Constantine, the ‘homeland’of “Knowledge Day”, is a bigchallenge, because we shouldrepresent the development ofthe University successfully, in therst place. Actually, the eortsthat had been made were great

and honourable, but the ques-tion here is whether we are readyto keep up the changes and tobring new ideas and activities!Well, I think these plans dependon the University’s policy, not onthe students’ choice.

A university teacher of English since 1982, AbdelhakNemouchi is one of themost inspirational teachers in the department of English at University Constan-tine1. He started his career as a teacher at secondary school. Little by little andby working up a sweat, he could take his destiny into his own hands, and madehis wish of being a university teacher come true. We do all have a person who inspired, is inspiring or will inspire us in life. Describe this person!Or if ever you could be someone else, who would it be? 

What accomplishment in your life are you the most proud of?

M. Nemouchi is a PhD holder and his aim in life is to educate his four children and to train thousands ofAlgerian students-potential-teachers. His deeply rooted belief is that life is worth living only when channeledby others’ chuckles and laughs.

The grandeur and the magnicence of many of my school teachers inspired my choice of teacher profession.Providence has willed that I was oered to teach during the same year (1982) at secondary and higher levels.Discipline issues dictated my choice for university career. If I had to start from scratch, I would choose thisprofession.

Oh, I’m very sensitive to what you say, but I don’t think your assessment is consensual. When a teacher facesthirty students, he’s depicted in 30 dierent ways. To answer your question, I’m tempted to say that the key

of success lies more in honesty than in prociency. Be worthy of the others’ trust, deserve your salary andbe generous enough to share all you possess (knowledge in teacher’s case): you will succeed. Am I leading asuccessful life? Wisdom says ‘yes’, ambition replies ‘no’.

I worked on a heavy le for more than two years: implementing tourism studies at Constantine University. Imade a huge sacrice by undergoing a one-year training period far from my family, and ended the projectwith a complete syllabus designed for the Bachelor and Master degrees in tourism eld. Spanish partnersshowed total disposal to help for the rst half-decade. Unfortunately, I failed to convince the central highereducation administration that projects of this kind require special resources. Bitterly, I had to give up.

Even when asking him personal questions, M. Nemouchi was very welcoming;

Conducting a happy family life! I don’t conceive dinner around a table without all family members.

The rst name that crosses my mind is Mohamed (Peace be Upon Him). Few years ago, I oered myself thegreat pleasure to spend the Mouloud En-nabawi Day, in the MadinaMosk which shelters his grave. Since then,I can’t stop thinking that this man lying there behind a metal green gate is the most inspiring person for bil-lions of people on Earth.I’m in no way an exception to escape his inuence.If I could be someone else… no! I don’t envy anyone except perhaps the old shermen I often meet in LaMarsa shing port. Their life revolves around ghting wind and waves for shing. These people never cheat.One day they ght nature and the day after they beg it for some food. I’m planning to join them after I retire.

With no hesitation, I’d certify that I’m proud of constructing a happy family life. I wish I could do or give moreto my university and my country, but I haven’t been given this opportunity. Today, when students and staworkers approach me with gratitude, I thank them with bitterness because I know I could do more than what

I did for the institution. Prevailing conditions did not allow. Giving priority to politics at the expense of peda-gogy handicapped and alienated many of the university teachers.

What were the three-four biggest challenges you faced and how did you deal with them? 

How would you describe your life? If ever you were given the chance to choose another life for yourself, what would it be like? 

 A piece of advice for the readers of the magazine!

In my professional life, during the mid-2000s I had to convince hundreds of university teachers of the neces-sity of reforming higher education in Algeria and implementing the LMD system. I, with other colleaguesunder the close supervision of the president of Mentouri University, had to build up strong arguments infavour of the Bologna Process. Unfortunately, I couldn’t convince decision-makers that politics and peda-gogy cannot coexist under the same roof. This confusion made the reform deviate from its initial trajectoryand led to dissatisfaction with the LMD system.

As to my social life, and though I regret I failed to undertake and realize some important projects like lear-ning Coran, I consider that I’ve done everything humanly possible to do. If I happened to fail in committingin more satisfaction, it’s simply because of a lack of time. Life is so … short! As to choosing another existence,I would certainly opt for rural life in a small coastal village.

Construct your life on honorable assumptions and beliefs, and stick to honesty. It protects you as you can’timagine. Never forget that as university students you are among the best; and as such, you can do a lot forothers.

Through these questions/answers, we could explore some of M. Nemou-chi’s world, we knew more about the person and the teacher he is. Weknew how humble, caring he is; he cares about his students and is alwaysready to give them a helping hand. He presents his lectures in an upliftingartistic way. His lectures are much more like sessions of relaxation. In addi-

tion to all that, he is always sharp-looking, making him even more respec-ted and admired. We hope you will enjoy reading this interview as much aswe enjoyed working on it with him.

  On the 26 of December 2006, the rst television channel “Fatafeat” was launched on purpose of 24-hourfree-to-air cuisine which is based in Dubai. Since that day, Fatafeat has gained a great interest from a wide rangeof people. Algerian women, as well, were interested in Fatafeat mainly in order to acquire new methods of cooking.However, this channel was not fully satisfactory for the Algerian society because of some particular reasons. UntilAugust 2013, a new Algerian TV channel was launched under the name of “Samira TV” and was based in Algiers.All views were oriented to this new channel principally for the reason that it truly serves the needs of the Algeriansociety.

  Well, Owing to the pri-vatization of the audiovisualsector in Algeria which led intoopening many private channels.These channels reected thesociety’s, culture, thoughts andneeds .Among Them, Samira TVhas given the chancebasically to

the Algerian woman to study herneeds at home and in her daily lifein order to provide her with thebest creative ideas. Unexpecte-dly, Samira TV has known a greatconcentration from the Algerianwomen since it aords her withthe right necessities, rather thanFatafeat the one which had thelion share of viewing rate.  While investigating this

phenomenon, we gured out thatthere are many reasons behindthe shift of the Algerian womanfrom Fatafeat to Samira TV. Tobegin with, Samira TV is conside-red close to the Algerian womenrather than Fatafeat and this iswhat the 23 aged Besma hasacknowledged, adding: ”I watchSamira TV simply because it suitsme, it is close to my culture, thepresenters use simple and avai-

lable tools and ingredients in theirprograms, and they are so directin conveying the message to thefollowers. Whereas for Fatafeatprograms, most of time, presentstrange dishes that has no rela-tion to the Algerian culture. Be-sides they use inaccessible ingre-dients for us and this issue seemto make the cooking process oftheir meals quite hard.”

Another reason Miss Kha-lida, aged 28 years old, has raisedis “the language” when she said:“As we used to watch Fatafeat, wecouldn’t completely understand

the language they speak, even forthe Arabic spoken programs be-cause the presenters use unfami-liar names for products. However,the presenters of Samira TV pro-grams address directly the Alge-rian woman, plus they use purelythe Algerian dialect .All women,

consequently, can understandand interact with them either theeducated or the non-educatedones.”  Generally, Fatafeat pro-grams are mainly interested ininventing new dishes, tastes andways of cooking. Yet, one of Sami-ra TV purposes is preserving theAlgerian heritage; i.e. the Algeriantraditional cuisine. As Mrs. Leila,

aged 51 years old, answered: “wesee Samira TV to remember olddays, when we were young girlslearning how to cook ‘Couscousand Chorbafrik’ from our mothersand grandmothers.” So, Samira TVnow is giving the chance to thenew generation for the purposeof preserving the Algerian tradi-tional taste with the same avorof old days.

“Diversity in programming

is considered as the main principleof Samira TV.” said Mrs. Souad; i.e.it presents so many programs ofdierent interests. It is concer-ned with cooking, decorating likepainting on plates and glasses, artand couture including “macraméand broderie”. All these activitiescover the traditions of the wholeparts of Algeria going from Eastto West and from North to South.

She added also: “In contrary, Fata-feat focuses only on the cookingpart, and unfortunately ignoresthe other activities which af-fectsthe interest of all women.”

While investigating women aboutthis phenomenon a very specialand dierent view has come out.This is because; it was a man’sview. Mr. “Nour-Eddin”, aged 29years old married, has broughtto light another reason in whichSamira TV has aected his daily

life and cooking habits for thebest. He stated: “When I go homeat the end of the day, my wifeasks me about my preferences fordinner. Sometimes, I want somechanges rather than eating thedaily frequent dishes. So why, Iturn to Samira TV that presentsso creative and delicious recipeswith limited ingredients whichconsequently changes the rou-

tine of the dinner table in the waythat do not aect the man’s poc-ket. Actually, this part of nancialsituation is not taken into consi-deration by Fatafeat at all.”

In conclusion, the pheno-menon of switching interest fromFatafeat into Samira TV is consi-dered a great and successful stepfor the DZ media. Simply because,

Algerian media is now aware ofthe Algerians needs, particularlywomen. Furthermore, they havemade a great job in creatingbenecial and aective programsthat t the pure Algerian society,exactly as it is, meaning its realconditions, and not as it is sup-posed to be.

Ness El KhirAn Algerian charitygroup that raises

hope

Few years ago, the Algerian society witnessed the emergence of several charity groups, namely “Ness elKhir”. It rst started in 2009 with a small group of youth, living in Algiers, who decided to assist poor peoplewithout having to be part of an ocial organization. These young friends, then wanted to show to the rest of

the society that people do not necessarily need to have an authoritative president or to be declared on opera-tive documents to help in making positive changes in the society and indeed, they have shown everyone thatthey could help needy people through forming a group of friends and neighbors who are ready to provideassistance to others. In a blink of an eye, people from dierent Algerian cities heard about this initiative andconsequently, Ness El Khir became very famous and spread over almost all the Algerian territory.

  To have a detailed ideaabout what the group of Ness ElKhir does, we had the pleasureto meet one of its most activemembers: Souf Mounir Youcef,who told us about the remar-kable and successful experiencesthe group has been through.

 Youcef, having had more than three years of

 experience with this amazing group, could you

tell us a little about the steps you go through

 before proceeding into a given activity?

 “Before proceeding into any activi-ty, we organize a meeting to makea plan for the operation we intendto carry out as well as to deter-mine the required budget. Then,we start collecting money startingfrom our families to everyone weknow. For the time being, we areplanning to take breakfasts to hos-pitals regularly.

 Sharing a simple moment that most of us takefor granted, like having breakfast, with hospi-

talized people is so interesting. Are there other

 activities that you perform within hospitals?

“Sure! We occasionally arrangewhat we call: a Colorful Day ; a dayin which we pay visits to pediatrics.This consists in organizing a smallparty in which we disguise intoclowns and decorate the children’s

rooms with balloons and pain-tings. At the end, we give themsome presents such as toys andshort stories”.

This is truly amazing! Drawing a smile on

those innocent faces must make you feel great

 about yourselves! Is there anything else that

you do for children?

“ Yes. At the beginning of everyschool year, we prepare My SchoolBag event. We just try to nd themaximum of poor families, coun-ting the number of children theyhave, and then buy all the booksthey need and the necessary toolsthey will be using at school ».

Going out and looking for poor families in a city as big as yours must be very difficult! How

 do you manage to succeed at doing this?

Not at all! When we are united, wenever feel the heaviness of work.For example, there is a more com-plex activity, yet a bit similar to thisone; looking for poor people inthe streets, and which we alwaysperform with great success! Withthe beginning of every winter, wecollect blankets, coats and somewarm clothes, then donate themto the homeless people we nd inthe streets. This activity is named“a warm winter to all” .

This is genuinely impressive. What about

religious events? Do you plan for an activity?

“In fact, in religious events, weorganize many activities. In Rama-dan, for example, we prepare sup-per and take it to the Rest Houses,where we break the fast with pa-

rents left by their children. In El Aid, when Ramadan is over also, weorganize a Cake Workshop we of-ten take the necessary ingredientsto the orphanage , and teach or-phans how to make cakes”.

With Ness El Khir, help is not given to hu-

mans only, but environment too! Can you tell

us a little bit about that?

“We often organize a “ City Day “in which we get divided into smallgroups and clean dierent neigh-borhoods, streets, parks, universi-ties and even cemeteries. There isalso what we call a “Green Day”, anactivity that we organize mostly isspring, and in which we plant trees.Even in summer, we make what wecall a « Blue Day » activity in whichwe clean beaches in dierent cities

”.

Today, Ness El Khir is not only agroup of people gathered for aspecic reason, it also forms aunied and beautiful family. Eve-ryone is ready to give his all, justto learn how to be grateful aboutwhat they have and feel that senseof satisfaction because of dona-

ting with appreciation. The mem-bers are dierent, they have dif -ferent ages and yet, the chemistrybetween them is just incredible,and the atmosphere in which theyperform their activities is madeof a smooth mixture between se-riousness and fun. Of course, thisbenevolence group has struggleda lot to become what it is today,but it has achieved its most impor-tant objective which is reviving the

charity work.

  As the sun went awaybehind the mountains announcingthe end of the day, I took a look atmy agenda in an attempt to showrespect to my punctuality and toput in order my schedule … I wasturning the pages, those of themonth of March, one after theother and scheming through thelines I wrote in a hurry … on thevery rst line of each page, I wrote“Constantine” … I turned the lastpage, closed the agenda and thenI smiled … I did not want to pro-vide myself with the smallest clueabout that … I wanted this hint tolead me everywhere and nowherein the interval of no time … to me,it was a wink to the rendez-vous I

have every month with Constan-tine lovers … those who bear aresemblance to me when it comesto cherishing the tiniest detail ofConstantine … those who value

and appreciate that moment intime, now called past, and thatwas the present of our ancestors,once upon a time …

With a deep sigh I whispe-red: “If only we were granted withthe ability to go back in time!”almost a smile was drawn on myface when I thought of that veryidea! Involuntarily, I was usingthe last case of the conditional:“the impossible probability!” … anawkward silence invaded my mindfor a while, and then, just like inthe cartoon when the charactershave a brilliant idea; a light bulbappeared over my head and setmy thoughts free … it is very truethat travelling in time is unat-tainable, but imagination is themind’s eye … and yes! Imagination

is so aordable to dreamers …When the light of the morningstole the darkness of the night, Ithought of reanimating the his-tory of Qssentina in my memory… I planned to visit the histori-cal sites and monuments of thevarious civilizations that tattooedtheir names on her skin, instead,to immortalize their love storiesfor they knew their life was short

and hers is eternal...I had this desire to be dressed inmy mother’s “qatifa” … that longdress of velvet embroidered withvery ne golden threads and wornby the women of Constantinemainly in wedding ceremonies… I thought of that and thoughtof decorating my forehead with“ledjbine” or “khayt errouh”, myneck with “lemkhebel” and some

other necklaces, my wrists with“khlekhel” and “ma9yass”, mywaist with “lemhezma”, and myankles with “rdif” without forget-ting “s’khab” that falls on the front

of the dress from the shoulders tothe waist … and then thought ofgoing for a walk in the old narrowpaths and passages with that gol-den “chebrella” when Constantineis still waking up … only thoughts;I said to myself …but still longingfor this visit … with the actualfashion, of course!!  On the table, my coeewas served … I drunk it slowly… pausing after every single sipand organizing my trajectory …I murmured swiftly: “my memo-ry” is going to be my guide … Iwent out twittering that “zajal”… “hina youchrikou alfajr” (whenthe dawn shines) … I stopped fora moment and uttered: “goodmorning Constantine!! … beau-tiful you are under the morning

light … Constantin was not wrongwhen he named you after him!”Ah Constantin the Great you arethe rst station to stop by…”

I went to him … in front of the trainstation situated in Beb el Kantara,nely sculptured; standing and hol-ding a torch in his hand … I lookedat this statue for a while trying tohumanize it … I still remember myfather’s smile when I told him that …I used to accompany him when he

collected the very rst data for hisbook “Constantine, T’en SouviensTu?” (Do You Remember, Constan-tine?) A book that he wrote pas-sionately for almost 15 years: “youcannot write about Constantine ina month or a year! Qssemtina is fullof details, Qssemtina is a civilizationitself.” He says extinguishing his ci-garette, and sipping the last dropsof his coee, under the rhythms of

a bunch of malouf songs he playson his lute … all that was brought tomy mind in the space of no time …Isn’t the love of Constantine quitesimilar to that precious jewelry ofthousands and millions of days gi-ven by one of the ancestors, someday, in the past, and transmittedfrom father to son or from motherto daughter for several generations… kept and cherished till the end oftime? Yes! It is a piece of the past, a

piece of memory … Beb el Kantara… “The door of the bridge” … histo-ry stated Constantine was surroun-ded by seven doors that closed bythe sunset to protect herself fromstrangers … The main doors werefour and were located in the southof the city; Beb el Kantara, Beb elOued, Beb el Djabiya, and Beb elJdid. These doors were destructedduring the colonial period one after

the other … along the way … TheBridge of Beb el kantara showed up… the oldest bridge … built in theepoch of Salah Bey on the ruins ofa roman bridge, the year 1792 andrenovated by the French, the year

1863, during the reign of NapoleonIII. This bridge is composed offour arches; the main arch is of 56meters. “El Kantara” is 125 metersheight above the Rhummel Riverand 128 m span…  Not far from “El Kantara” islocated the bridge of “Sidi M’cid”;

also called “the suspended bridge”.This bridge, which was inaugura-ted in the 19th of April 1912, wasconstructed by the French. It is 175meters height above the Rhummelriver and 164 meters span …Almost under the bridge “sidi M’cid”,

we perceive the bridge of “Falls” …It is 80 meters height above theRhummel River …The bridge “Melah Slimane”, called

“The Pedestrian Perrégaux” in thepast. This bridge, which was builtbetween the years 1917 and 1925, isa smaller pedestrian version of thebridge Sidi M’cid. It is built hundred

meters above the Rhummel Riverwith a 125 meters span and 2.5 me-ters width. This bridge, unlike theother bridges, swings and wobblesas one traverses its center point.Named after a saint, the bridge “SidiRached” was built by the French the

year 1907, on until the year 1912. Itcontains three main curves with 27arches; the largest curve measures70 meters. It is 447 meters span, 12meters width, and 105 meters abovethe Rhummel River. “Sidi Rached”is classied among the highestbridges made of rocks in the world.

Under the bridge “Sidi Rahed” isfound “The Bridge of the Devil” …It was given this name for the infer-

nal sounds the river’s water makes.It was built by the Turkish and it is

reserved to pedestrians only…The “Trans-Rhummel Viaduct” orthe “Giant Bridge”; which is stillunder construction, it is 27 m width

and 8 km span…Following the trajectory my memo-ry traced, the “Transrhummel via-duct” was the last station to stop by… I went back home with beautifulpictures of the gorgeous sceneriesof the clis and gorges of Rhum-mel that the glorious bridges grantpassengers with, and a rollercoas-

ter of emotions related to climbingdays on history … those bridges of“sakhra” (the rock) that are pres-ent today and absent, once upon atime …

I saw a Dying Lion

It was the first time I had seen a wild lion dying,Mouth wide open-eyes bloodshot and on its back it waslying.No wound did I see and no roaring could I hear anymore -From violent roars to painful groans- my heart sanklow.

I was right there in the middle of the wildBetween the bushes and thorns; sharp and mild.For once, the jungle was silent, with neither fog nor mist 

And I stood there under a tree, watching the dying beast.

The beast looked at me; our eyes met and I sawA pain that was deep set- deep in the vain glory of war.Its tears I could feel, even though the eyes were dryAnd I quickly looked away for mine tears were nownigh.

Somehow I risked taking another glance at the poor thing.

Five ribs were visible, all coiled up like a stretchedspring.Flies carpeted the lion's mouth brookFlying to and fro with each breath the animal took.

Standing there, my own soul began bleedingMy whole substance, my substance melted with a strangefeeling.The lion's eye communicated something with my inner self

And suddenly in that dying thing, I saw a reflection ofmyself.

It is true, most of us walk but inside we are dying.Most of us are laughing yet the heart is crying.We are strangers and enemies to our true selves,Its not because we love it- we have locked our eyes inforgotten shelves.

How to Lose Weightwithout a

Diet?

Do you have a serious problem ofoverweight? Have you tried manymethods, but nothing was in fa-vor? Now you can get rid of the se-ver diets, and change your way ofchoosing food. To get the weightthat you have always dreamed of,you have to be a mathematicianin eating and calculating some

numbers. It is simply “calories” thatneed to be well counted, either tolose, gain or merely maintain ourweight.

A calorie is a unit of mea-surement of energy that the bodyneeds to carry out any physical ac-tivity. Food is certainly the sourceof energy, and the human bodyneeds all kinds of food: Carbohy-

drates, Proteins, Sugars, and Fat.The man needs a specic quan-tity of calories every day, and thisquantity depends on his activities,height, weight and age.Hence, there should be a balancebetween the amount of caloriesthat we get from food and thecalories that we burn in order notto gain (or maintain?) weight. Thehuman body stores all the caloriesthat it does not need as greases touse them later in case of caloriesdeciency that it is got from food.Thus, if we eat too much, the quan-tity of fat in our bodies increases,

and when we eat less our bodyuses the fat to produce energy andthereby burns lot of grease. This ishow we lose weight.Many studies showed women, ingeneral, need 1500-2000 calorie topreserve their current weight whilemen need roughly 2000-2500 ca-lories. This number is also known

as the Basic Metabolic Rate (BMR),and it can be calculated using thefollowing formula:

• For men: ( 13.75 x weight(kg) ) + ( 5 x height (cm) ) - ( 6.76 xage ) + 66• For women: (9.56 x weight(kg) ) + (1.85 x height (cm) ) - (4.68x age) + 655

Then, the obtained result shouldbe multiplied by the activity factor”as shown in the table below:

Specialists say that the humanbody needs minus 7716 calorie tolose 1kg. We can use this numberto calculate how much we can losein a given time, for example we cantake away 500 calorie from our BMR(1500-500=1000), after that wemultiply the result by the numberof the week days (1000x7=7000),

then since in every 7716 we lose1kg, we have to multiply the resultby one before dividing it by 7716(7000x1/7716=0.90). Therefore,we may lose 900g in a week and3.6kg in a month (900x4). In prac-ticing some sport we can also burnfrom 200 to 300 calories a day ona treadmill or on any other sportdevices.  However, a balanced combina-

tion between the amount of foodwe should eat and sport is thebest way to lose weight. Therefore,choose food carefully, calculatehow many calories we need perday and follow an eective sportprogram; we are denitely goingto get rid of many kilos and have asuitable weight.

How to Charge Your Smartphone Faster?Complaining about Smart-phone’s short battery life or theamount of time it takes to chargeup, which is a cliché in this newgeneration, can result in impa-tience.Here are some tips and tricks youcan employ to get your batteryfrom dead to full in less time.Have a look of the suggestionsbelow

1st tip:  Turn yourSmartphone o: If you want your Smartphone tocharge faster, you have certainlyto turn it o, but if you do needit much then try to put it in "Air-plane Mode" (from the "Settings"menu), and in “Silence mode”.

Those options will stop yourphone from looking for cellularand Wi-Fi signals, receive any callwithout ringing and can speedup the process of charging.

2nd tip: Use the wallcharger instead of the USB:

makers state that "heat will de-grade your battery's performancethe most" and advise the user to“keep his Smartphone out of thesun or a hot car (including the

glove box), in cases or covers thattrap heat", the ocial advice is tokeep your Smartphone as nearroom temperature (22 degreesCentigrade) as possible.

5th tip:

Finally, Smartphone makers oer
