Dr. Leola Adams received a B.S. degree from SC State University {1969) with honors and the M.S. {1970) and Ph.D. {1975) degrees from Iowa State University. Further study was done at Clemson University and the University of Virginia. Prior to being named Interim Vice President for Research and Economic Development/Executive Director of 1890 Programs at SC State, Dr. Adams served as Dean, School of Applied Professional Sciences; Chair, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences; Interim Executive Director, Center of Excellence in Transportation; and Executive Director, National Museum of the United States Army Student Development and Mentoring Program. Dr. Adams provided leadership to numerous university-wide committees for faculty performance and evaluation, strategic planning, mentoring, international education, and budget planning and processes. Other leadership experience includes: Vice President for Professional Standards of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences {AAFCS) where she served on the Councils on for Certification and Accreditation;· President , South Carolina Association of Family and Consumer Sciences {SCAFCS); Chair, 1890 Council of Family and Consumer Sciences Administrators; and Chair, South Carolina Family and Consumer Sciences Roundtable. She served on the South Carolina Women in Higher Edu- cation Executive Board and as consultant to colleges and universities, schools, government, and the business sector. Further, Dr. Adams co-chaired the inaugural 2007 Nation- al Democratic Presidential Debate held at South Carolina State University. Dr. Adams is the recipient of the 2013 Distinguished Alumna Award and Helen LeBaron Hilton Award , Iowa State University; 2002 Distinguished Alumna Award, SC State University; 2001Distinguished Service Award, AAFCS; 1997 Exemplary Service Award ,Division of Academic Affairs, SCSU and 1890 Coun- cil of Family and Consumer Sciences Administrators; 1997 SCSU Quarter Century Club; 1997 Commander’s Award for Pubic Service, U.S. Department of Army; 1997 Star of Excellence Award and 1996 Out- standing Alumna Award, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, SCSU; 1996 AAFCS Leaders Award; 1990 AHEA Distinguished Faculty; 1985-89 En- dowed Distinguished Faculty Chair, SCSU; 1983 Order of the Palmetto; General Foods, Incorporated Fellow; and 1969 Iowa State University Research Foundation Fellow. Dr. Adams has a keen interest in international ex- periences and has worked/consulted in Tanzania, Ea.st Africa; Sierra Leone, West Africa; and Johannesburg, South Africa. She has traveled to all seven continents: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America; 49 states; and two U.S. territories. Dr. Adams is featured in chapters in the book, African American Women Contributions to the Human Sciences {2009) and in Visions Magazine, Iowa State University Alumni Association {2013).
