Funny AnabelleAnabelle was a very funny girl. She told knock-knock jokes, made silly faces, and played
tricks on her family. She’d put toothpaste on the toilet seat, hidden frogs in her Dad’s boots, and
filled the cereal boxes with seashells. She could write her own name, spin in a circle seventy-
five times without getting dizzy, and the only way she would eat pizza was if the pepperonis
made a big smiley face.
“Anabelle, you are so funny!” Mommy says.
“Abell, you funny!” Lila says.
And Maisey just smiles. One morning when it was time to go to the store, Mommy sent Anabelle up to her room
to get dressed all by herself like a very big girl. She decided to be so funny and put all her
clothes on backwards. Then she went to the bathroom and put 17 bows all over her head and
two different shoes on her feet.
“Oh Anabelle, you are so funny!” said Mommy.
“Abell, you funny!” said Lila.
And Maisey just smiled.
Another sunny day, while Mommy was upstairs folding laundry, Anabelle decided it
was time to go to the baby pool on their porch. She put on her most purple swimsuit, crowed
like a rooster, took every spoon out of the kitchen drawer and carried them all outside. She and
Lila plopped down in the pool and ate right out of the cereal box, using each spoon just once.
“Anabelle, you are so funny!” Mommy said.
“Funny!!” Lila said.
And Maisey just smiled.
Most afternoons, after all the little girls had napped, the whole family went to the
garage to watch a parade. It wasn’t a real parade, but that is what Anabelle called it. They sat in
their chairs and waited for people to walk by with their dogs so they could pet them. Anabelle
stuffed her mouth with marshmallows and shouted out silly names for the dogs as they trotted
by.
“Diamond!”
“Popsicles!”
“Stripeybottomo!”

Then she would skip up and down the sidewalk singing “Puff the Magic Dragon” or
crawl along pretending to be a puppy while Lila shouted names at her.
“Anabelle, you are so funny!” said Mommy.
“Abelle, you funny!” said Lila.
And Maisey just smiled.
Well, one morning, Anabelle woke up scrunched against the wall and decided she was
not going to be funny that day. She marched to her closet and picked a brown shirt and brown
pants. Then she brushed her hair and stuffed all her hairbows in her pillowcase. She quietly
walked downstairs for breakfast without twirling one little bit.
After breakfast Lila took off her shirt and ran to the pool. She splashed and hollered for
Anabelle, but Anabelle know that diving into the pool like a seahorse ballerina would be very
funny and so she simply stepped in quietly and splashed as little as possible.
After naps, it was time for parade-watching. Anabelle knew stuffing her mouth withmarshmallows and slomping around like a swamp monster would be very funny. But Anabelle
was not funny today, so she slowly ate just one marshmallow and let Lila pet the puppies all by
herself.
Finally, Anabelle’s unfunny day was done. She brushed her teeth and put on a plain
white T-shirt for bed. Mommy came in with Lila and Maisey. Anabelle hugged her tight around
the neck and whispered, “Mommy, I know I wasn’t funny at all today, is that okay?” Mommy
looked at her a long time and Anabelle wondered if Mommy could love her even if she wasn’t
funny. Then, Mommy smiled. She hopped up on the bed, flapped her arms, and shouted,
“Anabelle, I love you!”
Then Lila flapped her arms and shouted, “Abell, I wuv you!”
And then Maisey just smiled.
And so did Anabelle.
