Atlantic Interactions: a bottom-up process promoted by Atlantic Nations
New intergovernmental initiative to unleash the potential of the Atlantic for Society. It fosters knowledge-driven solutions for Atlantic and Global Societal challenges that require interdisciplinary research and innovation of complex Earth systems through cooperation targeting the Atlantic. Atlantic Interactions aims at fostering new paradigms of interaction across the Atlantic and across disciplines to foster new knowledge on ocean, climate and energy sustainability
Open and bottom-up debate within the International Scientific Community to prepare a white paper for a comprehensive transatlantic international research agenda based on the uniqueness of the Azores and other islands across the Atlantic - extended to most of the Atlantic nations and beyond

New Initiative of International Cooperation The Atlantic Interactions and the AIR Centre
This new intergovernmental initiative Atlantic Interactions will be implemented through the Atlantic International Research Centre (AIR Centre)
Integrated vision for the Atlantic: The development of the AIR Centre will extend the capabilities of research centers around Europe and North Atlantic Nations to the South Atlantic
Interdisciplinary focus: The AIR Centre will act as a catalyst for research and innovation in multiple domains ranging from the interactions of the Ocean with the Atmosphere & Climate, including Sustainable Cities and Advanced manufacturing, enabled by Space technologies, data system and supercomputing

These FCT PhD Programmes were pilot programmes for the implementation of the International Centre for Advanced Training of Portuguese speaking researchers in Basic Sciences”, an UNESCO Type II Centre. This UNESCO Centre will promote: • advanced training , S&T development, teaching, communication and dissemination of knowledge in
the PALOP; • Knowledge transfer and the development of high-level scientific capabilities in PAOLP through the
creation of advanced infrastructures and expertise networks involving Portuguese and PALOP universities and research centers
