Meet Michael
Michael ImermanAssistant Professor of Finance
Co-Director, Financial Engineering Program – Drucker School of Management
Dr. Michael Imerman is an expert in banking, credit, risk management, structured finance, and
FinTech innovation. He has presented on all of these topics at academic conferences, regulators’
offices, and training seminars across the U.S. and on three different continents. His most recent
research examines the impact of technological innovation on financial services, more commonly
known as “FinTech”.
Professor Imerman’s specific interests are in three areas within the FinTech ecosystem. The first is
in credit markets and lending, where disintermediation by technology platforms such as Peer-to-
Peer (P2P) or Marketplace Lenders (MPL), is altering the sources, costs, and risks associated with
consumer and business borrowing. The second is in digital wealth management with the rise of
automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and robo-advisors changing the landscape of how risk
tolerance is accounted for and how portfolios are managed and rebalanced. Third, Dr. Imerman is
applying his expertise in banking and risk management to examine digital transformation in
banking with the rise of challenger banks and non-bank technology firms offering banking
services to individuals and SMEs.
