Functional performance is such a ca-pability that is immediately applicable in real life. It’s not only an aesthetical- or leisure sport. It prepares the mind and the body hand in hand with our ge-netical programme for fi ght and survival against all odds!

This type of workout is old and stems from ancient roots, but its current renaissance shows how unmistak-ably 21st century thing it has become by now. Accordingly, it combines the straightforward nature of our genera-tion with the atest scientifi c knowledge of our time. It’s free of unneeded moves and unnecessary formalities. It’s as straightforward and merciless as it can get – just as survival. Only one thing counts: effi ciency.

The core of the whole conception lies in constant change, which dif-ferentiates it from every other sport. A bodybuilder performs well in a given environment, with the same weights, proper nutrition in an air conditioned gym, approximately for one and a half hours straight. Then exhaustion kicks in, which results in lowered performance, while muscles become obstacles in the way of effective workout. A runner’s

body is accustomed to one specifi c and monotone challenge, but it’s impossible for a runner to make use of this ability in any degree in other circumstances. They are so called specialists, who perform exceptionally within their own rules, created to excel in extreme conditions in their own fi eld. As opposed to this no-tion, functional fi tness is a general sport. The body is put to the test constantly, thus preparing it for every possible chal-lenge it might encounter, even during a lengthy walk in the desert, climbing a steep cliff, escaping an elevator shaft or while lifting a heavy object abruptly. It develops concentration, endurance, self-control and contributes to one’s in-ner peace.

Supposedly, there is no other sport that would be so demanding on the body – metabolism, muscles, joints, ligaments, nerves among others – in its entirety. Such an extreme workload demands extre-me nutritional needs. The followers of func-tional sports have to be increasingly aware of their nutritional intake, because every single unwanted bodyweight kilogram might be harmful.

The primary and nearly sole prerequisi-te for functional sports is enduring lean muscles. That’s why we had to come up with a formula which eliminates water reten-tion, won’t load you over and is primarily for those, who are exclusively opting for quality lean muscles.

If you’re on such a training schedule, you might develop an entirely different view on fatigue. It stems from the very core of your muscles and runs down deep into your brain, and further to every single inch of your body. Extremely strong, and sometimes excessively long load paired with central fatigue, caused by improper re-laxation differs greatly from the exhaustion experienced by bodybuilders and traditional fi tness sportsmen. Their weariness is more local, and is narrowed down to one or two muscle groups. Physiologically, tiredness is triggered by lowered blood-sugar levels and the altered amino acid composition of the serum (BCAA-tryptophan hypothesis) during training. Furthermore, it is caused by lower phosphocreatine levels in muscle cells, the accumulation of lactic acid, low glycogen levels, microtraumatic infl ammatory proces-ses and the corresponding pressure of free radicals.

According to the BCAA-tryptophan hypothesis, muscles utilise a remarkable amount of BCAAs during training, and at the same time it doesn’t affect tryptophan

concentration. As a result, at the end of the training the blood’s BCAA content falls, while tryptophan levels remain unchanged. These two amino acid groups are contending for the same brain transport molecule in order to get into the fl ow of the nervous system. After an exhausting training session, when tryptophan levels are remarkably higher, the nervous system is overfl own by the latter amino in a bigger proportion, thus inducing exhaustion and languor.

The phosphocreatine theory claims that during intensive aerobic training, muscles provide their energy needs (ATP) from phos-phocreatine – temporary energy stores. After an intensive workout, the body might need up to 48 hours of recovery time in order to refi ll phosphocreatine stores, meaning that this much time is required to repeat another super intensive training.

The increase in lactic acid levels is cha-racteristic of anaerobic and intensive sports. It doesn’t only induce painful musc-le fever (DOMS), but because of the shift in local pH values, it creates disadvantageous circumstances for muscle contractions from a chemical aspect too. Thus, muscle fever prevents effective workout even for those sportsmen who otherwise have a high pain threshold.
