Swami VIvekanda Jayanti
(January 25, 2013)
Swami Vivekananda is a saint, who had immense faith among the youth of the nation,
has been torchbearer of relevance today. His birth anniversary is observed as the Yuvak
Divas (Ypouth.s Day. Apna Skool celebrates Swamiji;s birthday reverentially at all
centres with the Teachers recalling his words of wisdom to children. Arise and awake and
stop not until you reach your goal. Children drew pictures depicting the life and message
of Swamiji and enacted skits on the theme, as part of the celebration.

Most Apna Skool centres observed the National Republic day in the traditional way.
They included Prabhat Pheri (Rally) in the neighbouring village, Flag Hoisting in each
centre and a common Cultural display by children.
Prabhat Pheri (Rally)
The object of the rally is to communicate in the village national fervor as well as spread
the messages of social content, such as Smoking/Drinking being hazardous to health
and wellbeing, Eliminate the scourge of Corruption, RTI, RTE etc. through slogans and
posters that children carried. Children sang ‘ka kha ga gha sikho aghar katin na hogi
koyi dagar… ‘ to motivate all children to enroll in school.
Flag Hoisting
In each Apna Skool centre traditional flag hoisting to the accompaniment of National
Anthem took place with parents of the children invited as chief guest to do the honour of
taking salute.
Cultural Showcase This is indeed the occasion for the Children to showcase their talents in many
forms; reciting poems, singing songs, pose riddles, participate in Group dances
and enact skits etc.
Mahatma Gandhi’s
Anniversary (Shahid
Divas 30/01/2013)
At 11 AM today all Apna Skool Children,
Teachers and all observed a two minute
silence as amark of respect of all martyrs of
India‟s Freedom Struggle. It was also a day
to remind all of us the power of non-violence
as a remarkable tool in achieving
independence that Mahatma Gandhi led us

To curb the prevalent use of
plastic carry bags, which has
clogged many an urban sewer line
and polluted everyplace with non-

alternative is to recycle paper into
paper bags. Children have picked
up the art and engage in it to make
an ecological impact.

Teacher Training (March 2, 2013)
Trainer – Umar Time -10:00 to 4:00 (Mathematics) Venue- Jagriti Office A Teaching Methodology Workshop was organized making use of the expertise of Umar, who was earlier with Ekalavya, now with Azim Premji Founation. He showed the need to make use of visual representation to drive home the concepts in Mathematics, such as the use of beads to add and subtract whole numbers; use of division of a number of rotis (in numerator) among a number of diners (in the denominator) in explaining fractions etc. Simple tools may be improvised by teachers using locally available materials to communicate abstract concepts.

School (class 10) and Higher
Secondary (class12) exams were
conducted. Six alumni of erstwhile
Apna Skool , now attending
Jawaharlal Nehru Inter College

March 2013.
Mahila Divas (March 8)
Women‟s day was used to drive home to Apna Skool boys and girls and their parents that in a
progressive society there should be complete gender equality; men and women equal rights and
responsibility. Both boys and girls need to go to school and all professional avenues must be
open to girls. It is not right that boys and men go to work and earn livelihood and girls and
women remain at home doing the chores. Boys and girls share their works. Girls should be
trained to work in any sphere she has inclination for and women become equal partners with
men in having rights and shouldering responsibilities.
Symbolically boys did all the chores and wanted girls to not work today but holiday.

Acidic substances, which taste sour (lemon juice, buttermilk) are identified by the use blue
litmus paper that turns red. Alkaline substances, which are pungent (lime, NaOH) react by
turning red litmus paper into blue. Children demonstrated many common substances as to
whether they are acidic or alkaline.

Niranjan succeeds in curbing Alcohol Consumption by his parents.
“My name is Niranjan Kumar and I study in class 7. My
mother‟s name is Urmila Devi and my father‟s Krishna Mojhi. I
come from Jamuava village situated in Gaya district in Bihar
state.
My father had a debt of Rs 10000, because of which he had to
submit himself to work in Devpur brick kiln in Chaubepur for six
months. Together with my brother and sister I started attending
Apna Skool at the brick kiln site by Jagriti Bal Vikas Samiti. I
was very regular at the school.
My father drank hard liquor every day and there was often
quarrel between him and my mother. They were also quarrelling with neighbours on
some issue or another. When Didi met us in our Bal Sabha and told us about how
drinking alcohol is a big health hazard and suggested that we should persuade our
parents to give up both smoking and drinking it made a strong impression on me. She
was emphatic that there is absolutely no use in such indulgence. That they are
necessary after hard day‟s work is just an excuse and indeed is false.
That very day I began telling my father the harmful consequences of alcohol; in
particular that it will slowly and surely affect his health. I told him that if he does not make
a serious attempt to give up alcohol (and tobacco), I will prefer to go far away elsewhere.
I am happy that he agreed and right away reduced the frequency of drinking to two days
a week and very soon, he said, will reduce it further and soon give up all together. He
has already seen that there is much saving for the family. Money saved will go to better
living for the family.”
Visitors
This month saw many visitors to Apna Skool. Dr Anshuman Gaur is a new faculty
member in the Department of Material Science at IITK and is welcome addition to the
family of friends of Apna Skool. Akshaya Saxena from Delhi, who conducts IIT Coaching
Institutes for underprivileged, visited the Tatiyaganj centre and demonstrated simple
Science experiments.
