The port was developed in 1840 and is the principle home for all cruise ships in the region and a large fishing fleet permanently anchored in the estuary behind the town. Today we’ll enjoy a tour of the city which features many little kiosks, places to purchase local arts and crafts as well as traditional fruit salad and frozen drinks known as “Churchills.” Also being the country’s most important and thriving fishing port, Puntarenas is the perfect place to enjoy some of Costa Rica’s delicious fresh seafood.

Originally commissioned by the French in 1881, but built by the Americans 1904 to 1914, the seventh wonder of the world accommodates more than 14,000 vessels annually. On the route of the canal there are a series of 3 sets of locks, the Gatun, Pedro Miguel and the Miraflores locks. A complete transit of the canal usually takes between 9 and 10 hours through a series of three locks, Gatun, Pedro Miguel and Miraflores. Watch from the decks the system of locks raise the Island Princess 85 feet above sea level and enjoy the smooth voyage through this miracle of modern engineering.
