As the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce prepares to enter its 120th year of helping businesses in Fullerton thrive, a review of some of the achievements made by the Chamber in 2013 seem to be in good order.

at Cal State Fullerton on April 4, I shared with 300 attendees the Chamber’s highlights from last year, and I’m delighted to share them with you here.

At the core of the Chamber’s mission is our commitment to support businesses and assist them not only to become

fiscally successful but also remain in good legal standing. For our stellar accomplishments in this area, the Fullerton Chamber was one of only 27 local chambers statewide that the California Chamber of Commerce bestowed its President’s Circle Award, recognizing excellence in business advocacy and assisting members to comply with California employment laws.

Bringing you word directly from your legislative representatives, the Fullerton Chamber has hosted forums featuring Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-65), Congressman Ed Royce (R-39), and Senator Bob Huff (R-29).

You’ve worked hard to start or grow your business over the years and the Chamber has been there to help you share your good news with the community. In 2013 alone, we brought the big scissors and the notoriety to 35 ribbon-cutting ceremonies to mark your business’ milestones.

Helping Chamber members stay connected with each other, we’ve continued to develop networking opportunities that meet your needs through fun and productive activities such as our wildly successful monthly Sunset Mixers, twice-monthly Networking at Noon luncheons, and Happy Hour Networking events held in various local restaurants. More than 300 of you have connected through more than 50 of the Chamber’s networking and educational events in 2013!

The Chamber provides members with access to affordable online training through Coggno Learning Management Systems on such topics as social media, health, workplace safety, data security, business management and leadership, and software skills.

Keeping you connected to your Chamber and each other through social media has also been a priority and it shows. With upward of 2,150 Twitter and 1,550 Facebook followers, the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce was ranked by OnLineMBA.com 40th among the 100 most social media friendly chambers in the United States. And we continue the growth trend in our social media presence, with increases in LinkedIn group members by 95 percent, and 14 percent in Facebook and 26 percent in Twitter followers.

All this takes work and we’re committed to making sure we have the qualified, enthusiastic staff to carry it out. We recently increased our staff to four employees, adding a communications and events director to our already productive team.

We’re continuously looking for ways to make getting information about your Chamber more convenient. So, we’re revamping Chamber materials to make them easier on the eyes, more functional, and to prominently include more of your activities. We’ve started with a fresh new layout of our Fullerton Focus print newsletter, which you can now also view online by clicking on the icon on our website at fullertonchamber.com. I hope you’ll take a look!

What do these Chamber achievements mean to its members as a small-, medium-, or large-business owners? It means you have a strong resource to turn to for everyday business concerns as well as support and insight into the local, regional, national, and global business landscape. Presidents' Business Award Recipients AnnouncedEach year, the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce (FCOC) solicits nominations from its membership for companies and individuals to be recognized for outstanding accomplishments in the areas of business and community involvement.

The recipients of the 2014 Presidents' Business Achievement Awards are Popular Community Bank, Large Business of the Year; Colette’s Catering, Medium Business of the Year; Richey Advisors, Small Business of the Year; YWCA of North Orange County, Quality of Life Award; and Corporal John DeCaprio, the Hawkins Business Leadership Award.

This year’s awards will be presented to the recipients during a kick-off celebration of the Chamber’s 120th anniversary, the Business Achievement Awards Dinner on Wednesday, June 18 at the Summit House restaurant in Fullerton.

Businesses are recognized for a number of key criteria, among them are the company's involvement in the community, service above self, outreach, ethical business practices, length of service in the Fullerton community, innovation, leadership, environmental awareness, and ability to promote wellness and learning for employees.

The Hawkins Business Leadership Award—named for the late Linda Hawkins who was a business and community leader and dedicated Chamber member—is annually awarded to an individual who has personally made significant contributions to the community. This year, Fullerton’s own Cpl. DeCaprio was named the recipient of the Hawkins award.

“John has demonstrated extraordinary leadership doing a tough job that requires patience, strength and the will to make a difference in lives where some find no hope. For as long as anyone can remember John has been an institution in downtown Fullerton, assisting business owners, residents, and the downtrodden,” said Thiele in her announcement of the award.

During the winter holiday season, your Chamber of Commerce and American Express reward you with cash gift certificates for “shopping small,” but we hope you will continue the practice year round.

To help promote that idea, we have been distributing reusable shopping

bags at the Downtown Fullerton Farmer’s Market for the past two seasons. The colorful bags sporting the Shop Fullerton logo, are full of coupons and useful information about our local retailers.

Shopping local is a good thing. When you shop local, more of your dollars stay in the community, more jobs stay in the community, and more tax dollars go to schools and roads in the community. The California Chamber of Commerce has identified 26 “job killer” bills for 2014 calling attention to the negative impact that these proposed measures would have on California’s job climate and economic recovery if they were to become law. “The economic recovery is still the number one issue for Californians,” said Allan Zaremberg, President and CEO of the California Chamber of Commerce. “These bills pose a serious threat to our economy and, if enacted, would dampen job growth in the state. While it is encouraging that the list of new job killer bills is smaller than in past years, the unfortunate

consequence of any one of these bills becoming law would be harmful to our economy. Protection of the job climate remains CalChamber’s top priority.”
