Welcome to City College’s new full-time prospectus for 2013/2014. With our success rates placing us in the top 10 Further Education colleges in the country and a ‘Good with Outstanding Features’ rating from Ofsted, we promise you an excellent learning experience in a friendly, supportive College with a great community spirit and superb facilities.

As you may know, 2013 will be a year of big changes, with the participation age in education and training being raised from 16 to 17. Here at City College, we’re adapting to these changes by offering new courses for school leavers to give you an even wider choice of ‘vocational courses’ which train you for all sorts of enjoyable and rewarding careers, whether it’s catering, games design, hairdressing, music technology, carpentry, motor mechanics or photography.

The College has strong links with hundreds of employers across the region so many of our courses include work placements alongside the work-based training you’ll get on your course to increase your chances of getting into the career you want. New jobs and economic growth are going to depend on the entrepreneurial skills of tomorrow’s workforce and at City College, you’ll have the opportunity to work with our new Entrepreneur-in-Residence to develop new business ideas of your own.

The College also offers Apprenticeships in many different careers from Carpentry to Computing. Our new Advanced Apprenticeship in Digital Media, for example, has already proved popular and we have employers who are keen to take on creative and enthusiastic people who want to work in one of Brighton’s top industries.

Our exciting new Advanced Vocational Studies Programme gives you the opportunity to study three different vocational options from a choice of subjects. This enables you to develop a range of practical skills and knowledge to gain qualifications that lead directly into employment or provide university entrance points equivalent to three A-levels.

We’ve also added three new BTEC National Diplomas - Construction & the Built Environment, Beauty Therapy and Hospitality & Events Management - to our wide range of vocational courses. Lasting two years, each course is equivalent to three A-levels and is ideal for you if you’ve good GCSE results and have the ambition and drive to enter these industries at management level while picking up important hands-on experience and skills along the way.

If you are struggling to achieve your potential at school and may not get the GCSEs that you need to progress then the Pathways programme is an ideal way to gain some qualifications. This is a flexible programme that means you can explore different subjects and join us at various points in the year.

This is my first year as Principal at City College and I genuinely think I’ve got the best job in Brighton, working with a fantastic team who put students at the heart of everything they do. You will find the courses we offer at City College organised in this prospectus under four broad work-related categories:

Once you have decided which work-related area suits you,you then choose which subject area you are interested in. If you are torn between several subjects you may wish to consider our BTEC Advanced Vocational Studies route which will allow you to explore multiple subjects and result in a qualification equivalent to 3 A-levels. We also offer Personalised Learning options and a specific range of courses for students who are over 18 years old.

The level at which you can begin a course depends upon your previous qualifications and experience. The entry requirements for each level of qualification are outlined at the beginning of each industry section. Please note that completion of the first year of a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma is recognised as a 90 Credit Diploma - this is similar to achieving an AS-level after completing the first year of an A-Level.

who?A wide range of courses are primarily based at our central campus, including: Art and Design, Beauty Therapy, Business, Carpentry, Catering, Computing, Digital Arts, Electrical, English and Maths, Hairdressing, Photography, Science, Travel and Tourism and our degree level courses. 1�About Us > English & Maths

englIsH& matHsWhen you finish your course at City College,

we want you to have the best possible chance

of moving onto a good job or further study.

Having good English and Maths is one of the

key things that employers look for and is often

a requirement to move onto higher levels of

education. So it is important for you to have the

best level of English and Maths skills that you

can achieve which includes retaking your GCSE

if you didn’t get Grade C first time round.

This is why continuing to study English and Maths is part of all our vocational courses. Exactly how much and what you study will depend on the level of your course, your previous experiences and qualifications and any support needs you have.

Level 1 coursesYou will study both English and Maths for two hours a week, each working towards a Functional Skills qualification usually at Level 1. Level 2 courses You will study either English or Maths twice a week for a total of three hours in a class made up of students from a mixture of courses. If you have already achieved GCSE grade D in either English or Maths, you will have the chance to retake one of these subjects. If you have grade E or below you will work towards a Level 1 or 2 Functional Skills qualification in either English or Maths.

This is part of your programme of study at the College. Our specialist English or Maths lecturers will work with you to identify which is the best qualification, subject and level for you based on your previous study and the relevance to the course.

Level 3 coursesIf you have already got a grade D and want tore-take your GCSE English or Maths, you will have the opportunity to join a GCSE day time class. This is an optional extra so the hours will be in addition to your main qualification, so you must be prepared to commit to take on this study, attend all classes and complete the qualification. For some students there may also be the option of studying in the evening.

It is possible that your past experiences may have made you a bit nervous about studying English or Maths, or you may lack confidence in your skills. Therefore, we promise to make our courses interesting and engaging and, wherever possible, relevant to your course.

We have specialist teachers and a wide range of resources using the latest technology and we will also provide specialist additional support to those of you who need some extra help.

For those of you who are looking to study at the higher Level 3 and perhaps would rather generalise than specialise at this stage - then we have a fantastic new provision that will do just that.

In this new programme you will be able to select three subjects from the 19 on offer - finishing the first year with three BTEC Level 3 National Certificates (equivalent to three AS Levels). In your second year you can extend your studies and specialise in one subject - which will earn you a BTEC National Diploma.

These qualifications will give you a wide variety of skills and experiences that will really impress both employers and Universities - the perfect vocational solution.

Art & DesignThis course will introduce a range of new approaches to your creative practice and learning, helping you realise your potential.

ChildcareHave a significant impact on the development of children - influencing their development, performance at school and their future life chances.

Computer Games Design Designed to offer an insight into as many facets of gaming and digital technology as possible, with the emphasis on the creative and artistic aspects along with a thorough grounding in theory, industry history and cultural impact.

Construction & the Built Environment You’ll gain practical skills and technical knowledge which will enable you to build and make things that you’ll be proud of.

Film & TV A practical course studying the art of filmmaking using top industry standard facilities and through the study of filmmaker’s work.

Forensic (Applied) Science You will study science applied to the Forensic Investigations industry in our fantastic university standard facilities.

Health & Social Care Increase your skills and confidence in communication, cultural diversity, the impact of diet, anatomy and physiology, therapeutic activities, development of life stages and sociological and physiological perspectives.

Hospitality & Events Management Study in the exciting area of hospitality and events. You’ll develop your management skills that culminate in putting on your own event. Perfect for your CV and building connections in the industry.

IT & Computing Our computing qualification will prepare you for the possibilities involved from new technological advancements that await you in the next generationof computing devices.

Music Performance and /or Music ProductionUsing state-of-the-art production facilities and rehearsal space, you will have the opportunity to work on recordings that are released on a compilation album on the department’s own label, ‘Brighton Records’.

Photography Amazing studio facilities, access to fantastic equipment, experienced and supportive tutors in one of the most creative and dynamic photography departments in the country - it’s no wonder Ofsted rated us Outstanding.

Public Services You will enjoy the specialist units such as outdoor and adventurous expeditions, fitness training, expedition skills and water based activities.

Sport Performance and/or Sport & Exercise Science A fantastic opportunity for you to train across a wide range of the sporting disciplines, developing your abilities within sports and games while studying the science and training principles behind the practical.

Sport and Exercise Science As well as playing sports, it is important to know about the science that goes behind being fit and healthy. You’ll find out how athletes and players need to exercise and develop skills to perform at their best.

Street Dance Our dance students combine study with physical dance tuition in areas such as breakdance, streetfunk, hip-hop, jazz dance and all forms of urban dance.

Travel & Tourism Travel and Tourism is one of the most exciting and vibrant industries in the world. You’ll study the business side, travel markets and enjoy residential European trips.

Maths and Science at Grades A* to C are required if you choose Beauty Therapy, Construction and the Built Environment, Sports Science or Forensic Science

neW foR 2013Hospitality Level 3 BTEC National Diploma

The BTEC National Diploma in Hospitality has a specialist work-related focus. With this qualification you will develop essential skills such as customer service, interpersonal, supervisory, finance and employability skills. These abilities will help to ensure you find success in your preferred field of work with the potential to start management training. Alternatively you can progress onto our University of Brighton Degrees in Culinary Arts or Hospitality and Events Management.

The course is designed to be flexible so that it reflects your individual interests and career aspirations. You can choose to focus on various areas within the field, for example: catering, bar work/management or event management.

Entry requirements: Minimum of 5 GCSEs A*- C to include English.

Beauty Therapy Level 3 BTEC National Diploma

The BTEC National Diploma in Beauty Therapy develops the essential skills and attitudes to find success in your preferred field of work within the sector. This nationally recognised qualification will give an understanding of the employment opportunities available within the beauty therapy industry so that you can progress into a specific area of work, and if already in employment, move on to a more responsible position. There are a variety of potential careers that you can explore, all of which will benefit from your studies, for example: beauty consultant or beauty therapist. The structure of the course allows you to focus on your interests within the industry, such as complimentary therapies, sports /exercise therapy or cosmetic science.

Entry requirements: Minimum of 5 GCSEs A*- C to include a Science.

Construction Level 3 BTEC National Diploma

The BTEC National Diploma in Construction provides more in-depth knowledge from a wide selection of areas in the field. You will gain an insight into the employment opportunities available in the construction industry enabling you to choose your preferred area of work, and if already in employment, progress to a more responsible job or prominent position within your chosen field. The course structure allows you to focus on what interests you within the field, be it building, surveying, town planning or site management. There are a range of different optional units that includes, Sustainable Construction Techniques, Building Conversion, Tendering and Estimation and Property Management

Apprenticeships are ideal for you if you want

to learn through experience and receive

your training in the workplace. It is also

very appealing for employers to work with

apprentices as they get an opportunity to be a

part of your development and can induct you

seamlessly into their work culture. It’s a very

rewarding experience for both parties!

You may already be employed but want to gain a qualification to show you have the relevant skills in your job role or you may wish to progress within the company and an Apprenticeship qualification will demonstrate to your managers that you are ready for career progression.

City College is a major provider of Apprenticeshipsin the South-East and we have extensive contacts inthe industry.

We work closely with employers and advertise their vacancies on the National Apprenticeship Vacancy Service and have a high street presence through our City Skills & Jobs Shop.

Why should I take an Apprenticeship?Apprenticeships are a fantastic way of learning on the job. While taking an Apprenticeship, you will be working for a real company in a real job. You will gain the skills, knowledge and experience of your chosen industry. You will also work towards either an NVQ or another nationally recognised qualification.

You can ‘earn while you learn’Wages will vary depending on the type of Apprenticeship you are taking; however you will earn no less than £95 per week. Recent surveys have suggested that the average amount apprentices earnis now around £170 per week.

Flexible trainingAs an employee, you will be in active employment for most of your time as most training takes place on the job. The rest of your training will take place at City College - usually once or twice a week.

Studying Beauty Therapy at City College

is fun, exciting and will leave you with the

skills, confidence and, most importantly,

experience, to progress into employment or

further your skills through study.

The emphasis on our courses is to prepare you with practical experience and skills, taught by highly experienced and skilled lecturers. By the time you leave us, you will be ready to work in a variety of settings and salons, applying treatments such as manicures and pedicures, waxing, make-up, aromatherapy and Indian Head Massage. If you progress onto our more advanced courses, you will develop your treatment knowledge and practical skills.

We offer a unique and fun, practical learning experience. Our four salons are run as professional clinics and are open to the public for treatments. You will get real-life experience which will look fantastic on your CV. As well as our salon, we have excellent links with employers in and around Brighton and all students get the opportunity to go on a work experience placement. All of our courses are taught by staff with a high level of expertise and current salon experience.

The Beauty Therapy department also runs several courses alongside our main full-time programmes, which you may like to take to supplement your new skills or gain a new interest. These include courses in threading, advanced waxing, tanning and hot stone therapy.

Due to the high level of training and technical skill involved in the Beauty industry, you will enter onto Level 2 and progress onto the higher Level 3 qualifications.

commerce today. A business qualification

can lead to literally hundreds of career

options and our Level 3 Business Plus

course offers a unique certificate that you

do not get at other colleges across Sussex,

giving you the edge when applying for jobs

Our courses run from Level 1 right through to Level 3, so no matter what stage you’re currently at with your education or training, you can expect to gain the skills and confidence to progress with us.

What you will study will depend on what level you are at, but you can expect to learn how to start work in business, retail and administration, explore business purposes, communications, marketing, accounting, business ethics and event/project management.

Our Business department is one of the most dynamic and exciting areas at the College, using trips, work placements, practical experience and industry talks as the basis of our training programmes.

The spirit of entrepreneurship is strong within the College and as a Business student you will be at the heart of this. Armand Sablon, won the Roux Scholarship which is the most prestigious competition in the UK for young chefs aged 22 to 30 and Carl Newberry won the coveted Young Chef of the Year award. or events management? Our Catering

and Events department offers a range of

vocational catering and cookery courses

that have been specially designed to

prepare you for a successful career in the

challenging, but rewarding, catering and

events sector.

You will gain invaluable experience if you choose to study with us. Our Catering department benefits from modern facilities such as industry standard training kitchens as well as our two training restaurants - ‘The Gallery’ based at Central Campus and the East Central Brasserie located at the Amex Stadium are both open to the public providing a top of the range dining experience. We also have some excellent links with famous kitchens in and around Sussex, including Hotel du Vin, which accepts a number of students on Apprenticeships and work experience every year.

While you train with us, you can expect to learn the principles and then advanced techniques that will prepare you for your career. Depending on the path you choose, these can include safety and hygiene, table service, nutrition, cooking techniques, costing and creating a menu. Each year, our students dazzle the City with their creativity in the ever-popular hair shows that make full use of the skills the College has taught them and showcases their talents to the major employers in the city. It is events like our annual hair show that have put this department on the map and local employers look forward to receiving applications from our graduates.

Most students will move into the industry once they’ve finished our programme but you may wish to pursue a career in teaching by enrolling for the KTTLS and DTTLS teaching certificate on offer at university. Or alternatively an A1 Assessor Award to become an NVQ Assessor in Hairdressing foreither FE or the public sector.

Travel and Tourism is one of the most

exciting and vibrant industries in the world.

You could be helping someone find their

dream holiday, travelling the world as a

flight attendant, helping people party

in sunny locations as a holiday rep or

a top manager.

Our courses, taught by staff with many years experience working in the industry, also equip you with the skills and confidence to pursue a career in many other fields.

Studying with us is fun. We go on study trips around the world, from New York to London, and practice using cabin simulators and our real-world travel bureau which sells holidays and flights to staff, students and the general public.

With fantastic progression rates onto drama

school, University and professional acting

work, combined with the wonderful facilities

and our creative links with Brighton’s

vibrant performance industry, our Acting

department, rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted,

will ensure that your skills are honed to take

While you are with us, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and wider understanding of acting as an art. You will study areas such as acting technique, contemporary theatre, classical theatre and acting for film and television. The final performance of the course is a high profile show in the Brighton Fringe Festival.

Digital Media and Games Design is a growing industry and degree level courses are offered around the country, including the Foundation Degree in Digital Media Design at City College. We also offer the Level 3 Apprenticeship qualification in Creative Digital Media for students who prefer to have direct entry into an employment situation whilst they study. The department has an outstanding track record of students moving onto higher levels of study, employment or onto Apprenticeship programmes.

The Film, TV and Video industry offers

many exciting opportunities including

directing, production, camera operation,

sound operation, editing and script writing,

as well as all the behind the scenes jobs

involved in getting a project from the initial

idea all the way to the screen.

Advances in camera and computer technology have meant that it is now possible to film, edit and screen films entirely in the digital format. Filmmaking courses at City College prepare you for further training and employment in this exciting and expanding industry. In fact, we prepare our students so well that many move straight into the industry or towards the top university courses in the country for film - for example Ravensbourne College, Bournemouth Institute and the University of Sussex!

Through a mixture of practical lessons and vocational projects, you will have the opportunity to develop your creative filmmaking skills. You will be taught using professional standard equipment, including Sony NX5 HD cameras and Mac editing suites running industry standard Adobe Premiere (CS6). You will also be encouraged to increase your academic skills in order to access a full range of progression opportunities.

Throughout the course you will work with real-life clients, covering live events and creating promotional videos. We will also develop your filmmaking interests so you can build your portfolio in the direction you wish. Recent projects have included training films for the Brain Injuries Rehabilitation Trust and documentaries about green travel for the Europe-wide think tank, CIVITAS.

designed to give you a broad introduction to

the skills and techniques that you will need

You will work on practical assignments producing photography work that will introduce you to a wide variety of techniques and processes. In our fully equipped darkroom, you will learn traditional darkroom techniques and in our photographic studios you will experiment with different cameras and studio lighting techniques. Using the latest industry-standard Apple iMac computers and software, you will learn how cutting-edge technology is used to enhance and manipulate photographic images.

You will be encouraged to be experimental in your approach to your work and will learn how to research, plan, explore, develop, produce and evaluate your ideas and the ideas of others. You will underpin all of your work with research into the work of historical and contemporary photographers and photographic practices.

The course has a strong industry focus and you will undertake live briefs and competitions to gain an understanding of what it is like to work in the industry. Street is an exciting form of dance that

is taking over the country. Street dancers

work in music video, theatre, corporate

entertainment and anywhere that modern

cutting edge entertainment is wanted. It

is also the area of dance where the most

innovation is happening, with styles being

mixed across the board. At City College, we

offer the start to your professional training

in this vibrant discipline. Our teachers are

all working dancers so they understand

what is needed to make it in this industry.

Everything is focused on producing innovative, original street and urban dance. You will also study professional dance techniques including jazz, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, ballet and flamenco among others to ensure that you have the skills to progress as a commercial dancer.

Strong local and national links with the industry mean you will have the opportunity to create your own links and develop as a professional. This includes performing for professional clients, performing in the Brighton Fringe festival, taking part in workshops with working dancers and meeting agents and representatives from dance schools and specialist universities.

Our students progress to work in the industry, study at specialist dance schools or gain places on Performing Arts degrees at top universities. All students leave us with the ability to lead dance classes.

These unique one or two year programmes are designed for talented young people interested in football, boxing, rugby and netball, to take advantage of the opportunity to develop their sporting skills, while continuing their education at the same time.

These programmes provide a network of support, coaching, sporting excellence and competitive surroundings designed to get the very best out of you as you progress through a vital moment in your sporting development. We appreciate the level of time and sacrifice required from you and your families in order to reach the top of your sport and have developed these programmes to ensure that while you train to the very best of your abilities, you’ll also be getting vital sports and coaching qualifications.

These programmes will ensure that you will get a solid understanding of the scientific and coaching principles behind your elite level performance, while giving you options should you not wish to pursue your career as a professional sportsperson in the future.

Students will receive specialist coaching from an ex-professional footballer and UEFA Licensed Coach for a minimum of 6 hours each week and will play competitive matches in local and national league and cup competitions.

there. Whether you train to be a carpenter,

builder, plumber, mechanic, electrician

or decorator - you will have the skills and

The construction industry in Sussex is buoyant, and we have some excellent links with the industry in order to help you find an Apprenticeship. You’ll also gain real-life experience in our top facilities within the specialist construction centre at our East Campus. Whatever discipline you are training in, you will work alongside students from other areas - replicating the work place. This department takes part in some amazing community projects such as the recent build of a war memorial in Peacehaven and annual trips to Africa. Not only do you contribute to the community but you get to use your skills in a way that will impress future employers and build contacts for the future. Having a trade provides you with a skill that will be invaluable to you for the rest of your life and provide you with many different opportunities. The construction and building maintenance industry is varied and a wide range of training and jobs are available with both large national organisations and small local companies. City College has a strong reputation with local employers, many of whom have our former students working for them. Some jobs focus on the construction of new buildings and others with the renovation, repair and maintenance of existing buildings - few jobs will be the same!

A practical, ‘hands-on’ person will be interested in the construction trade and a bricklayer will be working at our East Campus at the specialist construction centre where you will find industry standard facilities. You’ll gain practical skills and technical knowledge which will enable you to build and make things that you’ll be proud of while working alongside other student groups training in related fields - replicating a construction site.

During your training you will study things like safe working practices, building methods, working drawings, masonry structures and cladding, walling and much more. You’re assessments will be through a mixture of practical assignments and an online exam.

As well as your training, you will get involved in some great community projects which will look fantastic on your CV and help build contacts; recently our students built a war memorial in Peacehaven. The UK construction industry is constantly

changing and developing the way in which

it meets the challenges of creating the built

environment - and that’s where it needs you!

Employers and the government require young people who can develop the skills required to design, create and build homes, schools, libraries and hospitals for future generations.

The skills you will develop on our courses, depending on which route you take, include progression of your knowledge of quantities and construction technology, carrying out first and second fixing, structural carcassing, maintenance, the principles of CAD and the operation of wood working machinery. These are the real-life skills you will require to work within the industry.

Our specialist facilities at City College are excellent. We have life-size, realistic training environments, such as a scaffolding rig, workshops and large working areas. Carpentry students will also reap the rewards of the excellent links we have with large companies in the area, including the City Council and Mears. The department also offers incredible opportunities as part of an annual project in Kenya to work on construction projects in local schools there.

Our teaching team all have vast industry experienceas well as many years of teaching, which has maintained our high standards, excellent pass rates and allowed us to produce graduates who bring a high level of technical skill and confidence into the industry.

Are you interested in being part of the

exciting and growing electrical industry?

The UK construction industry is a major

employer, consisting of small and large

companies and many self-employed people.

The industry is constantly developing to

meet the challenges of creating a built

environment which meets the needs of

the population and growing environmental

pressures.

If you enrol onto our full-time courses you could be a part of this exciting industry. The Electrical department offers a range of courses which can take you from Level 1, all the way through to being a Level 3 fully qualified Electrician (our Level 3 courses are offered in our Part-time prospectus). We have a wide selection of part-time courses that you may wish to study afterwards to gain further training and qualifications. We have purpose-built, modern workshop facilities for you to build your skills in a realistic training environment.

Depending on what level of training or education you are currently at, you will develop skills and experience in working safely in an engineering environment, forming and assembly of cable containment, wiring and testing electrical equipment, maintaining electrical systems and assembling electronic circuits. Usually, our students progress from our full-time courses onto Apprenticeships in Electrical Installations.

Under the JIB grading system, an electrician must hold Level 2 and 3 Technical Certificates and an NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent). City College offers these qualifications on a part-time basis:

City College is a leading provider of Motor Vehicle Studies and has been training young men and women since 1946, supporting students to achieve in their studies which are all industry led. Our achievement rates are amongst the best in the whole country - marking us out as a destination of excellence for those wishing to gain engineering qualifications.

Our full-time courses are all vocational courses and are certified and recognised by the Institute of the Motor Vehicle Industry. At Level 3 there are two different pathways to take - the Maintenance Diploma will teach you advanced technical skills whilst the Motor Vehicle Studies Diploma will better prepare you should you wish to move into a management role within the industry.

All levels cover the technical needs for today’s motor vehicle repair industry. Depending on the level you are studying, you can expect to learn about vehicle construction and maintenance, electronic systems, operating principles, replacing engine components, diagnosis and rectification and auxiliary equipment electrical faults. Your training will provide you with essential knowledge for service technicians working in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots.

We have over 150 students studying with us on a full-time or part-time basis and our goal is to make learning fun and for you to be successful!

The Plumbing industry continues to grow and is very competitive. Therefore our courses have been designed to give you the skills and confidence to get out there and work for yourself, winning jobs and contracts.

Depending on what level you are studying, you can expect to learn about the principles of health and safety, environmental awareness, plumbing theory, plumbing practice, cold and hot water processes, sanitation, central heating, and employment rights. Our Level 1 course will give you the basic knowledge and skills of plumbing, but if you want to gain employment you will need to progress onto our Level 2 course.

Not only can you benefit from the specialised plumbing facilities at our dedicated site at Preston Road, you will also receive the wisdom of an excellent teaching team that have over 140 years of teaching experience combined!

We have an excellent record of students going on to be successful and this has been recognised recently by student success at the Sussex Achiever of the Year Awards for two years running. is the answer.

In small, supported and friendly groups, PATHWAYS is a fun, practical way to enter education and training. We’ll work with you to find out what it is you like and what you might want to do in the future and come up with a programme just for you. You might like to choose sessions in care, construction, hairdressing, beauty therapy, motor vehicle, sport or public services - depending on what suits you best.

With the support and help of our friendly tutors, we will work with you to develop your skills, boost your confidence and provide you with lots of advice and guidance along the way.

The best bit is, that at the end of the programme - you will have a much better idea of what you might want to do, realise you love coming to City College and have gained a certificate from us that will allow you to enrol on your chosen Level 1 course so that you can start your journey towards your dream job.

TEAM programme could be perfect for

you. It’s a free, intensive 12-week personal

development course for 16-25 year olds,

offering exciting challenges and providing

new skills and qualifications.

The Prince’s Trust is a highly-respected charity that helps young people in the UK who are not in work, education or training. On the TEAM programme, you’ll work as part of a small team based at one of our sites in Brighton, Hove, Shoreham or Bognor. Our friendly and supportive Team Leaders will guide you through the projects and help you to learn new skills. The programme involves spending a week at a residential centre and taking part in a TEAM Challenge where you will be caring for others. You’ll also complete a work placement, work on a community-based project and plan and stage an end of Team presentation to celebrate your achievements. This is usually held at the world-famous Grand Hotel on Brighton seafront.

The course lasts for a period of 12 weeks with Teams starting in September, January and May each year.

If you want to prepare yourself for

degree-level education in a supportive

environment, an Access course is the

ideal route. The courses last one year and

involve approximately three days a week

at College. A recent moderation report by

LASER commented that “City College is

clearly demonstrating best practice and

offering a great service to Access students”

and our Access students have a 94%

progression rate to Higher Education or

employment and training.

To succeed on an Access course, you’ll need to be 19 or over, motivated, enthusiastic, be able to manage your time effectively and be ready to study. You will be part of a group of adult students who are excited about learning and are willing to work hard with other members of the group and participate.

We offer a wide range of Access courses, all of which provide an opportunity to learn more about a specific subject area as well as core skills, so they are excellent preparation for study at university. Forget school - you will be learning in a friendly, community-spirited college environment. All of your classes will be highly engaging and enable you to be involved and assessed by a range of methods including presentations, essays, reports, case studies, short answer tasks, and for some courses, practical work.

Entry requirementsAccess courses are designed for people without the appropriate skills and qualifications to prepare for higher education. If you do not already have a GCSE grade C in English and GCSE Maths grade D you will need to demonstrate literacy and numeracy at an appropriate level for the course by completing an initial assessment at interview. You will need to show a good level of motivation, be fully committed to the course and be able to spend a minimum of 8 hours per week studying at home. You will also need to submit a personal statement in support of your application.

In a department graded Outstanding by

Ofsted, Brighton is a fantastic place to

study a Foundation course. Considered

to be one of the best Foundation courses

in the country, it achieves incredible

success rates that are higher than the

national average and has a track record of

placing students at the most prestigious

universities in the country. You will be

taught by experienced specialist teachers

and practising artists and will have your

own studio space and access to specialist

studios, workshop facilities and industry

standard computer suites.

Designed to challenge your attitudes and ideas the course will introduce you to a range of approaches to working methodologies and thinking. With an emphasis on problem-solving and critical thinking, you will be asked to take risks, work outside your comfort zone and be challenged to be inventive and experimental, exploring problems from new angles and developing your own creative solutions. The curriculum balances taught sessions with independent learning and development time.

Studio projects and workshops at the start of the course will help you to find where your strengths and interests lie and decide on which specialist pathway to pursue: fine art, fashion, textiles, 3D design, graphics, and illustration. Within your chosen specialist pathway, you receive help and advice from experienced tutors with making a UCAS application and preparing a strong portfolio of work for degree course application. The Foundation course facilitates progression onto a wide range of specialist art and design degree courses throughout the country.

Entry requirements

You will need an A2 Level qualification A* to C grade in an art related subject, five GCSEs A* to C grade or other related experience and a strong portfolio of art and design work.

industries. Our Foundation Degree and

Higher National Diploma courses blend

academic and work-related learning

and cover the key knowledge and skills

employers are looking for. Located in the

heart of Brighton’s bustling, bohemian

North Laine area, the College provides

an ideal base for students to engage with

employers and industry, as well as with the

rich cultural and social life of the city.

Our Foundation Degree courses are two year qualifications that combine academic and professional learning. They prepare students for employment through a variety of methods, including placements, industry-relate teaching and assessment and personal and career planning. At the end of a Foundation Degree, students can choose to either graduate and find employment, or progress to a one year top-up course leading to a full Bachelors degree with honours.

City College’s Foundation Degrees are validated by the University of Brighton, a leading professional university. Foundation degree students can access some of the University’s services, including membership of the Students’ Union and libraries.

The College’s part-time Higher National courses are validated by BTEC. These three year courses are ideal for those looking to combine study with existing employment or family commitments.

internationally recognised National Council

for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ)

Multimedia qualification at our Central

Campus in the heart of Brighton’s bustling,

bohemian North Laine area. As well as

being one of the highest-performing courses

of its kind in the country, our students

have recently won national NCTJ awards

in areas such as Media Law and Essential

Public Affairs. This course will leave you

with a wide range of journalistic skills, and

is one qualification that will be valued by

employers within the news, magazine and

online industry and beyond. Our NCTJ

courses are extremely popular and very

competitively priced so apply early to avoid

disappointment.

Students applying for this course will have the option to qualify on our fast-track pathway through an intensive 18-week course, or alternatively there is a year long option more suited for those who have commitments away from College. Both pathways are designed to produce employable and skilled journalists for the next generation.

You will gain important skills required for successful journalism, including short-hand, law, magazine and news writing, from some of the best practising journalists and lecturers in the industry. You will also have the opportunity to benefit from industry guest speakers and a wealth of journalistic opportunity in one of the coolest cities in the country.

The courses include online and video journalism elements, leaving you with a rounded training experience and the confidence to progress into a wide range of careers within Journalism and other industries that recognise the high-quality NCTJ brand.

This is an exciting industry, with a wide range of employment opportunities in media outlets across Sussex and beyond. Graduates will be able to confidently apply for positions with newspapers, consumer magazines/websites, research posts,PR work, newspaper supplements or go on to sit the NCTJ’s National Certificate Examination (NCE). Brighton and Hove specifically is a very busy news patch served by many online and offline news sources.

This course is for students aged 19 or over who have already gained a Degree, 2 A-levels or equivalent. We also welcome those under 19 (as of Aug 31st 2012) and for you the course is FREE.

There will also be a two-hour aptitude test to sit with a minimum 60% pass rate required plus an interview with course leaders.

industry knowledge and you will have

access to industry standard photographic

This course bridges the gap between A-level and degree allowing you to further explore and develop your creative, practical, theoretical, critical and analytical skills. Exciting assignment briefs will introduce you to both traditional photographic methods and contemporary digital media techniques and applications and will introduce you to different photographic genres such as portraiture, fashion, advertising, experimental, location, and documentary.

Throughout the course you will be encouraged to push the boundaries of your creative thinking and will develop your knowledge of historical and contemporary photographers to inform your own photography practice. You will gain experience of what it is like to work in the industry through competitions, entrepreneurial projects, employer partnerships and ‘real life’ projects. Whatever type of photography you wish to pursue, professional working practice skills are essential. Professional practice skills will therefore underpin all aspects of the course.

You will receive help and advice from your tutor with making a UCAS application and preparing a portfolio of work to a high professional standard to support your progression onto university or employment or into an Apprenticeship.

financial supportFREE study and Financial SupportAll courses in this prospectus are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2013. The only fees you may have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help from the College’s Learner Support Funds or you can arrange to loan essential items from the College. You should apply for financial support as soon as you receive your course offer letter.

Other student benefits There are a range of financial support packages for those students who would otherwise find it difficult to attend college. You can receive help with your transport costs and your course costs. You can also benefit from cheap haircuts in the College Revival Salon, reduced priced meals and drinks in the college refectory and low priced stationery in the college shop. Our East Campus has a fully equipped gym that is also available to students outside of lesson times.

All students aged 16+ can apply for an NUS Extra card. These cards give student discounts in a wide range of high street shops and some online retailers. Cards can be purchased online from www.nus.org.uk

Your English language level (reading, writing, speaking and listening) will need to be one level lower than the course you are applying for. You may be required to attend an assessment prior to enrolment to ensure the level of your English is suitable for the course you wish to enrol on.
