I had a wonderful opportunity to complete my third year semester abroad at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. This involved studying at theuniversity and living on its campus for five months. The university was just outside the centre of Hong Kong, so I was able to experiencelife in the real city. I was inspired by the variety of possibilities the city had to offer, as well as the mix of many different nationalities. Making long-lasting international friends was important tome. Some of these friends have already visited me in Germany.Alina Boekholt

Programme overview The IBMS four-year programme is worth 240 ECTS. Each year consists of two study semesters. Each semester is divided into two ten-week periods. Throughout your studies, you will work together with other students in small groups to find answers to challenging, yet practical, business-related

problems. These small, multicultural groups of four to six students prepare you for effective communication and cooperation in international business. Training is also provided in specific skills essential to successful future careers, such as giving and receiving feedback, working in groups, intercultural sensitivity, customer orientation and presentation skills. These are a unique part of the IBMS programme.

First yearIn the first year, many subjects are linked by a practical business case. In one of the semesters students apply the knowledge acquired in their roles as consultants for a company needing advice. In the other semester, a similar structure is used: students develop a business plan in which they learn how to sell a product or service, how to set-up and run a company, and how to convince a financial institution to invest in their company.

Second languageTo deepen your cultural awareness and broaden your international horizon you will learn an additional world language, such as Dutch, French, German or Spanish. Learning a second language helps you to conduct business with stakeholders in more countries. You may even wish to apply your new language skills during your year abroad. The second language modules are exclusive to the IBMS 4 year programme.

Academic Advisor IBS offers valuable study mentoring throughout all phases of the IBMS programme. Each student is assigned a dedicated Academic Advisor during the introduction period. In the first year, academic advice concentrates on following study progress and assists you in adjusting to the IBMS programme and higher education in general. In the second and subsequent years, the Academic Advisor continues to monitor study progress. You will also get expert support when writing your study plan, as well as help and guidance in other student matters.

A student must have achieved 144 ECTS in order to start the final semester (Graduation Project in Semester 6).

After this period, and until the end of the first semester, the possibility to roll back still exists. However, it may mean the student encounters a study delay. All decisions are made with the advice of the student’s Academic Advisor. At the end of the first semester (first 20 weeks) the ‘roll back’ option is no longer available.

Second yearOne of the greatest opportunities at IBS is the year abroad. During your second year you will spend a semester studying at an IBS partner university and another semester doing a business placement at a company abroad.

If, based on your own professional goals, you are interested in deepening your understanding of international business and want to obtain knowledge about areas beyond the scope of the IBMS programme, you may want to apply for one of the IBS Honours Programmes. There are two options available: the IBS Honours Talent Programme and the China-Europe Business Talent Programme.

Application and assessment for IBS honours programmes takes place at the end of the first year of study. Both programmes begin in the second year and are followed, until graduation, alongside the regular IBMS study periods. The programmes are worth an additional 30 ECTS for students of the 4 year programme (23 ECTS for students in the 3 year programme*). The ECTS are divided throughout years 2, 3 and 4.

IBS Honours Talent Programme The focus of this honours programme is to identify talented students within the IBMS bachelor’s programmes and to assist them in accelerating their personal and professional growth. Students will enjoy the advantage of innovative learning experiences that are designed to engage their participation, broaden their intellectual horizons and develop and sharpen their academic skills. This includes the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research on business issues and builds upon the student’s increasing knowledge, skills, and business acumen.

Being part of IBS Honours Talent Programme is not only a rewarding experience, it is an opportunity to dive deeper into the participant’s post-IBS future. Studying with fellow honours students will challenge students to stretch their capabilities in an intellectually-stimulating classroom environment and provides excellent preparation for further graduate or professional study.

China-Europe Business Talent Honours Programme (CEBT)Working together has never been so important. The European Union (EU) and People’s Republic of China are both world players. The EU is China’s biggest trading partner, while China is the EU’s largest source of imports and 2nd largest two-way trading partner. These relationships are a major source of wealth, jobs, development and innovation for both sides. The CEBT Honours Programme was developed in 2015 by IBS, in collaboration with the Groningen Confucius Institute. Its aim is to advance business interaction between China and Europe, through the activities and achievements of a new generation of young professionals: IBMS honours students!

The CEBT Honours Programme will provide a platform on which top-performing students can develop high-end organisational and leadership skills, through real-life business projects. It will give talented students the skills to succeed in the key areas that influence Sino-European business. Students will work at multidisciplinary and international levels to explore a wide range of subjects that affect business cooperation, such as language, culture, society, law and economic policies. The CEBT Honours Programme will include the placement and graduation periods and, during the key phases, students will work on the Sino-Europe business assignments of a company.

“Developing countries in Southeast Asia suffer from a lack of clean drinking water. We started a company that exports water purification units to this region. The idea of the Blue Elephant Company was developed during a project of the International Business School’s Honours Talent Programme. Our company not only aims to make a profit, but also to take social responsibility in tackling the lack of drinking water in the region: Helping people to help themselves!”

Honours Programmes at IBS Massive Open Online Course (MOOC): ‘An Introductory Course to Economics at University of Applied Sciences’

IBS has launched the Netherlands’ first MOOC offering students an introduction to economics. The MOOC is designed for those interested in the fields of business, management or economics. However, as the MOOC is pitched at an introductory level, registrants do not need to have a business or economics background. The only prerequisite is to have a strong motivation to discover more about the field of economics, from the comfort of your living room! The course also provides the perfect preparation for secondary school pupils who are considering a business-related bachelor’s degree in the future. This makes it an ideal training for those thinking of applying for one of the Hanze UAS IBMS bachelor’s programmes.During the four-week MOOC, participants will explore the fundamental concepts of micro and macroeconomics. The classes will consist of short lecture videos and, at the end of each week, there will be an online quiz. A dedicated discussion forum will be managed by enthusiastic IBS honours students. This provides a valuable, interactive element, exclusive to the MOOC. In keeping with IBS’ international identity, the weekly classes will be undertaken in the English language, with subtitle options available in Russian, Chinese, German and Dutch. The IBS MOOC will run in September 2015, January 2016 and April 2016. Higher education in the NetherlandsThe education system in the Netherlands is known for its high quality of education and research, as well as its international study environment. With over 1,500 international study programmes and courses, it has the most in continental Europe. The Netherlands has two main systems of higher education, research universities and universities of applied sciences. Research universities focus on the independent practice of research oriented work in an academic or professional setting. Universities of applied sciences offer professional programmes which successfully prepare students for specific directions and careers. Both types of universities offer bachelor’s and master’s programmes.

Getting aroundThere is a wide public transport network of intercity trains, regional railways and local and long distance bus services. For shorter distances, bicycles are by far the most popular mode of transport. In fact, there are probably more bicycles than people in the Netherlands, and twice as many bicycles as cars. The combination of public transport and safe cycle routes means you don’t need to own a car! For travelling abroad, the Netherlands is ideally situated and is often called “The Gateway to Europe”. London, Paris, Berlin, Copenhagen, Rome and Barcelona are all within easy reach by train, bus, car or by plane from the nearby Groningen Airport Eelde. Groningen is approximately two hours train ride from Schiphol Airport (one of the main transportation hubs in Europe) in Amsterdam and close to the popular Bremen Airport in Germany. Regular transport services connect Groningen with each airport, as well as other important cities and destinations.
