PREPACE.

The first edition of the present Catalogue contained a list of those specimens of Mammals and Birds collected by Mr. Hodgson during his residence in Nepal, and presented by that gentieman to the British Museum prior to the publication of that Catalogue in 1846. They are the types of the specimens described in various scientific papers by Mr. Hodgson.

In the present Catalogue is added to the matter of" the former edition, now out of print, a list of the additional specimens of Mammals and Birds collected by Mr. Hodgson in Nepal, and of Drawings made in that country under his supervision, which were presented to the Museum in May 1858.

A list of the Reptiles and Fishes in the above Collections is also contained in the present Catalogue.

The following is Mr. Hodgson's account of the Collec- tion :

" Lists of Drawings of my Birds, a.d. 1857, December 20, packed in one great chest of wood.

" There are 982 numbers to the Drawings representing species, and corresponding to the numbers of the Bird Catalogae, and each bird has a ivmr^iet ^\Xaj2^'^^ ^si *^^ Drawing. But these 982 nxxmb^Te^ T^m^Va^ Ns^^c^^

separate delineations of the sexes and young of some of the species. They are dra-wn upon 1207 sheets of paper, including originals and copies, finished and unfinished. The originals are on 1025 sheets of paper, the copies on 182 sheets. (N.B. The originals, quoad sheets, have ex- ceeded 982 swpray hecause several sheets that had at first 2 or 3 species have now also sheets appropriated to one of such species.)

" Of copies to make the count full, observe that about 806 sheets were taken to England in 1843 and presented to. the British Museum; add to these 806 the present 182 sheets of copies, and the wholly new species which have been since drawn, and the count becomes full. There are 37 sheets in the above which are of new subjects, and un- copied now or formerly : thus.

"17 sheets of the breast-bones of Birds, numbered to answer to numbers on Drawings. Lastly, 17 sheets of parts of Birds, as bill, talon, (fee.

animals: of tho skuUs, organs, limbs, itc, of the above, 110 sheets. Add two animals sent by Jung Bahadur (with above birds), and also tour sheets of Ethnology, being originals and copies of the Lepcha priesthood in costume (Bijua and Bonthing in that tongue).

" In the same box with the above are two volumes of MS. descriptionB of the (luadrupeds and eight volumes of deacriptionB of tho Birds, done by my people at DaijiHng ; also the Buddhist drawings of Nepal and Tibet (according to Hat elsewhere), with the original explanations of them by Anurta Nanda, the latter in distinct packet and bundle ; also two bundles of MS. (bound and loose) of doBeriptions, done in Nepal by myself aad Campbell, chiefly tmatomy, and descriptions of manners and habits, chiefly by my people in Sepal, (There are, on the backs of most of the original drawii^ of birds and beasts, memoranda by myself.)

" Packed in the same large wooden box are all roy Buddhist drawings* and papers, and descriptions of them (in separate bundle), according to separate list ; the Bud- dhist drawings on cloth being made up into a long i covered with wax cloth.
