Full deployment of interoperable independent living solutions for older peopleA European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing priority
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY (ICT) SOLUTIONS CAN HELP HEALTHY AGEING
BARRIERS TO THE FULL DEPLOYMENT OF ICT SOLUTIONS
ICT solutions can prolong independent living of older people and extend the time they remain active and safe in their preferred environment with smart homes (lights, fall detection, safety, etc.)
they also have a huge potential to enhance social inclusion and participation of older peoplethrough video conferencing and social media for contact with relatives
ICT solutions enhance quality of work for carers and make overall care provisions economically sustainable by avoiding and reducing hospital stays through remote monitoring, safety monitoring
TECHNICAL BARRIER: Lack of open solutionsand interoperability as current solutions are based on single providers and cannot interact and be combined with other solutions developed by different providers or with slightly different purposes
SOCIAL BARRIER: Lack of involvement of older people in the design of the products and services
ECONOMIC BARRIER: Limited availability of affordable and commercially viable solutions, fast technological evolution and difficult business models
POLICY BARRIER: Limited large scale evidence of return on investments

WHAT ARE WE DOING TO PROMOTE THE FULL DEPLOYMENT OF ICT SOLUTIONS?
The European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA) supports publicand private actors across the EU to contribute to the full deployment of ICT solutions through:
Promotion of common standards for open interoperable ICT solutions: different ICT products/services able to interact between them and jointly deliver integrated services to different contexts, uses, providers
Empowerment of end-users: end-users are well-informed, involved in the design of ICT solutions and confident in solutions that effectively meet their needs
Promotion of the use of public procurement of innovation: enable public authorities to launch tenders for innovative goods or services which might not yet be largely available on the market
Evaluation of the return on investment of interoperable ICT solutions: to make investment in this field attractive for private sector
HOW:• Toolkits and guidelines• Cooperation platform to exchange
experience and knowledge
HOW:• Recommendations on standardisation
and interoperability processes• Toolkits and guidelines for user-driven innovation
solutions for independent living

and knowledge• Guidelines for implementing innovative
procurement
WHAT ARE WE DOING TO PROMOTE THE FULL DEPLOYMENT OF ICT SOLUTIONS?
CURRENT SITUATION: different providers provide multiple solutions that are not interoperable
IDEAL SITUATION:different providers offer multiple solutions that are interoperable and can be integrated
Public Administration launches innovative public procurement for the integration and interoperability of services for older people
