Winds of Change

Fujitsu has been active in the energy and utilities sector for more than 30 years, providing application services, ICT infrastructure and business consultancy services throughout the value chain from generation to retail.

The pace of change in the energy and utilities industries is increasing rapidly. Pressure is coming from all sides:

■ Regulatory compliance that requires your attention and demand to change

■ Environmental concerns about emissions caused by energy generation

■ Controlling costs and risk as market forces continue to impact your ability to generate profits

■ Addressing evolving opportunities such as the rise of multi-channel communication as a way to improve your business.

Research shows that only 32% of executives in private sector firms rate their businesses as ‘Fit to Change’.* Is your organisation responsive enough to prosper in a changing market? As business conditions change, so must the technologies that support them. Smart grid and smart meter investments are the cornerstones of the technology solutions for many of the pressures your business faces. But this won't be enough. For example, new billing engines and customer relationship management (CRM) systems are needed, while business intelligence and analytics will help save costs and drive business growth across the entire value chain.

In this constantly changing world, you need answers that are dependable, flexible and cost effective, while avoiding investments in equipment or skills that might become liabilities. That’s where a committed, expert, end-to-end IT partner can make a real difference. Fujitsu is that partner for thousands of customers around the globe. We offer world-class propositions – from smart metering solutions to pay-per-use cloud services, from desktops to data centres – which can enable you and your business to prosper today.

Smart initiatives are a clever infrastructure investment that will accelerate your business and enable you to innovate.

Bright Ideas

Building Smart CitiesWith urban living becoming the norm throughout the world, Fujitsu is creating smart cities that deliver more sustainable, efficient and people-friendly environments. It's part of our long-term vision of realizing a Human Centric Intelligent Society, where ICT helps to create a society where people’s lives are prosperous and secure. Fujitsu is involved in smart city projects in some 20 communities worldwide, collaborating with partners and contributing our insight and experience to reinvent urban living.

Did you know? In Saudi Arabia, Fujitsu is working to transform industrial estates managed by the Saudi Industrial Property Authority (MODON) into smart cities. The work includes building an environmental improvement system and a cloud system covering industrial estates nationwide as part of steps to bring about environment-friendly eco-cities.

We're entering an era of smart metering, smart cities and smart technology... but what does that really mean? At Fujitsu we believe there are three clear and immediate benefits from smart technologies - with many more to come.

1. Get closer to your customerWhether it’s the move to multi-channel or the increased data produced by smart meters, smart solutions provide new touchpoints and potentially new insights. To realise the full benefits, you need user-friendly systems at the customer end and effective data analytics capabilities back at base to cut through the noise.

2. Be more agileThe new data streams created by smart meters can be used to predict consumer behaviour, design new products and services, and deepen the customer relationship. For example, power companies will have a much more accurate and up-to-date feel for their user population – and the ability to respond faster to changing demand.

3. Save time and moneySmart solutions have up-front costs, but they generate high pay-back over a long lifetime. The smarter you build today, the better equipped you will be to adapt tomorrow. You'll be saving time and money by responding faster and avoiding hefty new-build projects in the future.

Fujitsu invests more than $2 billion every year in applied R&D, opening up new and smart opportunities for your business worldwide.

Smart Metering Case Study, USAFujitsu supplied devices with proprietary wireless technology to a utility company in New Mexico, enabling them to build a network of smart meters for approximately 30% less than other smart meters on the market. Fujitsu is also developing a cloud-based system to maintain electricity consumption data for each household, which significantly reduces the cost of building smart grids.

Centrica, United KingdomFujitsu was tasked by Centrica with reducing the cost of a suite of corporate applications by 50%.
