Féile Thí Chulainn will celebrate film as an art highlighting local films, shorts and documentaries, bringing together audiences and filmmakers within an intimate environment.

Screenings will include the work of award winning writer/director Louise Ní Fhiannachta, Film/Documentary writer Seán Murray, Dearcán Media and a local production created by Xela Cunarro Otero, a Comenius assistant in St Mary’s Primary School, Mullaghbane.

Fugitive / Adiós Ríos Adiós Fontes Cuimhneamh Oral History Project & St Mary’s Primary School

‘Fugitive’ and ‘Adios rios adios fonts’ are two unique films linking Galicia and South Armagh. These films have been created by Xela Cunarro Otero, a Comenius assistant in St. Mary’s Primary School, Mullaghbane, from Cangas, a town on the Galician coast of Northern Spain. She arrived in October 2013 and worked tirelessly with the school students, staff and the wider community to produce these outstanding pieces of work. The films feature footage of Galicia and South Armagh and use the Galician, Irish and English languages.

The first film features the poem ‘Adiós ríos, adiós fontes’ (Goodbye rivers, goodbye springs) by Rosalie de Castro, the unquestioned poet laureate of Galicia. She unconventionally wrote in her native Galician language, which, to the wider Spanish population was a dialect fit only for the illiterate and churlish! Xela says of Rosalia de Castro ‘I cannot remember the first time I heard about Rosalia de Castro. I have grown up with her; her poetry has accompanied me throughout my life, always in a brilliant and perfect way’. She says ‘I chose Adiós ríos, adios fontes; not only because it is one of her most known and popular poems, but also because it is about emigration (one of the many characteristics that link us Galicians with the people of South Armagh.)

8

The second film celebrates the work of Michael J. Murphy, South Armagh’s unquestioned main literary figure and the foremost folklore collector in Ireland. The film centres on his short story ‘Fugitive’ which also deals with emigration and sense of place. As with Xela and Rosalie de Castro our people are privileged to be guidedand inspired by the work ofMichael J. Murphy.

Death of a Pacifist Dearcán Media

The murder of Frank Sheehy Skeffington was shocking, even by the standards of Easter 1916. A committed pacifist, he was arrested by British troops as he tried to prevent the looting of shops in Dublin city centre. His distinctive looks, and high public profile as a journalist and political commentator, encouraged the soldiers to use him as a human shield when on patrol and his reputation as someone who would stand up for the downtrodden sealed his fate when he witnessed the pointless murder of a young boy who had stayed out beyond curfew.

Bás an Síocháini (Death of a Pacifist) provides a very different perspective on the run up to Easter 1916, from the viewpoint of those opposed to the militarism of both the insurgents and the British army. It will restore Frank Sheehy Skeffington to his rightful place as one of the country’s most progressive political thinkers, in terms of his support for feminism, socialism, and anti-militarism, and outline how his murder contributed to the growing demand for complete independence from British colonial rule.
