Despite this windfall, we still need to bolster up our Treasury. Peggy Wood, Secretary-Treasurer, has asked that the dues at the $40 per year be continued another year for 2009. Hopefully we will be able to return to the $25 per year dues in 2010, providing that we have a successful membership campaign in the Fall of 2009. We really need the financial support of 300 to 400 members paying the dues at the $25 per year level in order to carry out the work of the Association and to provide the newsletter to all Fulgh'm families and interested relatives. DID YOU KNOW ?Talking on a cell phone(including a hands free phone)while driving is as dangerousas driving while intoxicated. From: Human Factors and ErgonomicsSociety, Summer 2006

German Fulgh*ms ?A number of years ago while inAtlanta attending a microbiologymeeting, I saw in "UndergroundAtlanta” a genealogical display bya company that provides familybackgrounds and coats of arms.lwas allowed to read the materialon Fulgh*ms and found it nothinglike what our family history is like.it listed our family’s origins asGermany. I thought it was ascam, providing something forunsuspecting people who wantedbut did not know their familyhistory for a nice fee to thescammers.Recently, I wonder if i wasmistaken. Perhaps there arepersons with the Fulgh*m namethat have a German background.Back in World War I, being ofGerman ancestry was lookeddown upon and many people withGerman names changed theirnames to one that did not soundGerman. Perhaps someGermans knew and admired theFulgh*ms and took the name.Any male Fulgh*ms who havebeen told they are German inorigin and cannot trace theirlineage to early Fulgham familiesshould take the 12 marker Y-DNAtest to find out if they matchFulgh*ms who are known to bedirectly related Captain AnthonyFulgham. If you do take the testand do not match any Fulgh*ms,please report this to DanFulghum (address, page 2)For information, please go towww.familMedna.com fordetails and costs to be tested.Remember, we welcome all withthe Fulgh*m name to FFFNAirrespective of their DNA tests.

THROUGH ALL THESE YEARS© 1976by

Wiley I. RutledgeIn younger years I could dream of how good life

wouldbe,When all I had to do each day were things that

pleasured me.I did not know the toll that went in makingdreams

come true,Nor of the price that others paid each day to see me

through.Don’t mark medown asungrateful if thanks I failed

to show,I did not mean to beunkind ‐ I simply did not know

in younger years.

In middleyears I forgot those carefree days gone by,And I looked out on younger folks and it caused me

p to sigh.“How carelessly they drift” I thought “on any wind

that blows.”Don’t mark medown asunloving‐- untilyou’ve

reached that spot,It ’s just that time moved swiftly by - and somehow I

forgot,In middleyears.

Through all these years I now look back and dreammy dreams again

And once again they pleasure methey way they didbackthen

I recall the anxious days I spent in middleyears,And see howwell it all turned out ‐ and smiles

replace my tears.Don’t mark medown asuncaringor call me

unconcerned,‘Ti l l life ‐ and love ‐ and time teach you the lessons I

have learnedThrough all these years.

Writes Mark Rutledge of The Daily Reflector,Greenville,NorthCarolina.Myfather was 44 when he wrote that poem. He touched alot of lives in profoundways during his time, and notjustbecause he was a minister. He’s simply the type of personwho always reached out to other human beings. For usclosest to Wiley 1.Rutledge, havingone of thesepeople stepout of the fog (Wiley Rutledge now suffers fromAlzheimer’s Disease dementia) and bring to light suchmeaningful moments with him is nothingshort of a gift ofGod.Newsletter Editor ’s Note: The poem was apparentlywritten for Lynn Mrogan who was, at the time, ahomesick ml t reee from Ohio working In Knoxville.Tenn. THE FULGH*MNEWSLETTERSON THE INTERNET

There was a great deal of interest at theRaleigh Reunion regarding distributing thefamily newsletters via the Internet. KevinCharles from Rocky Mount attended the reunionand contributed discussion and suggestionsconcerning an electronic version of thenewsletter. There are several ways this could bedone. At first, we may not be able to includepictures with the text. The newsletters would goout as E-mail attachments to persons who askedto receive advance copy of the newsletters.Later, if we can find the expertise, we could putthe newsletters on the Internet with a link tothem on our homepage at Rootsweb. Also, wecould later send complete newsletters via E-mailas well.

We recently sent out the first three pages of theFoundation Newsletter (found in this mailing) toa list of E-mail addresses that our Past President,Betty Wiggins, is maintaining, ‐ Her“BREAKING NEWS” mailing list. We receivedpositive response from this.

Presently, we feel that using E-mail andsending the pages asattachment is something wecan accomplish. Later maybe we can becomemore sophisticated and try the other possiblerouts. Hopefully, Kevin Charles wi l l continue tohelp in this endeavor,

If you would like to beon Betty Wiggins’“BREAKING NEWS” mailing list, please

contact her by E-mailat.bwiggins@widowmaker .com.

If this mode of transmission of the newsletterworks out for you, please let us know.

For the present, we plan, in addition, tocontinue to mail the newsletters via the U. S.PostalService asbefore. This is to insure that allknown Fulgh*ms, Fulgh*m kin, and othersinterested in the Family receive a copy.

Pictures Fromthe 2008 ReunionWhile several photographs were available for

the newsletter, the best were taken by Ji l lHarwood ‐ many thanks, Jil l ! A l l of the reunionphotographs in this issue were furnished by Jil.

Elizabeth Anne Tijerina, the recipient of the 2008‑2009 FFFNF Scholarship, is pictured above. Elizabethwrites: ”Thank you so much for giving me $500 and thechance to attend EastTexas Baptist University.”She goes on to say that she has always wanted tobe a teacher. She wants to work with the next generation to“instill in them the need for their education.”She believes that “teachers serve theircommunities most because they influence the livesof children.” "Women of our generation need tobe involved with the children as well as to be ableto provide for themselves. I also think that Hispanicchildren who stmggle with the English languageshould have a chance to grow up and succeed inlife, so I want to become a bi‐lingual elementary ,school teacher.”“Again, I thank you so much for helping me with mycollege education.“God bless you”

Report at Board Meeting ;VIRGINIA LIBRARY

PROJECTJames E. Fulghum

Dr. Robert S. FulghumSaturday. June 21.2008

One year ago last week, Dr.Robert S. Fulghum and I conducted adiscussion centered around thepossibilities conceming the FamileLibrary Project it was felt that theFamily could not raise sufficientmoneys to go out on its own todevelop a genealogical researchlibrary in isle of Wight County.Virginia. and. therefore, a newapproach should be developed. itwas decided that a SouthsideVirginia Historical Library should beconsidered as a repository for theFamiYs historical documents alongwith other families that had their startin America in Southsida Virginia andhave subsequently sent theirdescendants on along to settlevirtually the Southside of America asmllasotmrplacesinthenation. ltwasteltthatsuchaprojectcouldbeavery successful tourism project aspeople returned to the area to searchfortheir roots.

This th‘nking was transmitedto the Presidents of both theAssociation and the Foundation andMr. James E. Fulghum was appointedby both to pursue this kind of th'nking.Mr. Fulghum then appointed Dr.Fulghum as Secretary of a Commlteeto be formed to pursue theimplementation of such a project. Itwas decided to enlarge the planningcommittee into a regional VigimaCommittee conta'ning someFulghamIFulghums and that thecommittee would elect a permanentChairmanwhen it is fully fomnd.

On Wednesday. June 20.2007. James E. Fulghum and Dr.Robert S. Fulghum traveled toRichmond, Virginia. to discuss theidea with officials at the Library ofVirginia. They met with Dr. Conley L.Edwards I l l Director of the Archivaland Records Management ServicesDivision, and following the discussionwith bin. Dr. Edwards. consultedElizabeth M. Lewis. On Friday. January 11. 2008. Dr.Robert S. Fulghum of Greenville. NorthCarolina and l traveled to Sm'thfield.Virginia. and had two appointments withJoseph Luter. N, President of SmithfieldFoods. Inc. and Judy WInslow. DirectorofTourismforSmill'Ifield.Vlginia.andforlsleofWIghtCounty.ngnia.

We discussed with each of theseofficials the poufli t ies for a proposedSouthside VIrg'nia Historical Library. whichwefelt.shouldhaveitsloeationintheircomrnun'ly.

Summer 20081On Tuesday. May 13. Dr. RobertS. Fulghum and James E.Fulghum met with Judy Winslow.isle of Wight Tourism Director. andStan D. Clark, Isle of WightChaiman of the Board ofSupervisors in M. Clark's lawoffices in Portsmouth. Virginia.Chairman Clark reported that theyhadnotyettieddownaglltoflandfor the Lbrary. but that they hadnoted some interest. In discussingthe possibilities, they urged JamesE. Fulghum to contact Mr. HenryMorgan. a large landowner anddeveloper who was one of theowners of a large tract of landacross the road from St. Luke'sChurchatSmithfield.

Mr. Morgan wastelephoned and in the discussionhe expressed interest in theLibrary Project and agreed to meetwith Chakman Clark. Ms. Winslow.and the Fulghums in Mr. Clark'soffices on Wednesday. June 18.The rmeting was later changed tothe Isle of Wight CountyGovernment Complex on the samedate and M. Richard Turner.another principal in the ownershipof the land, accompanied Mr.Morgan to the meeting. Mr. Clarkasked the Fulghums to outline theplan and the need for a site. Bothof the landowners asked severalquestions and then expressedinterest in the project. Theyobserved that a piece of land theyown across from the largecemetery adjacent to Saint Luke'sChurch might be a good locationfor the Library. Everyone agreed. The two landowners said theywould go back and discuss thematter with their other principalsand let the group have a decision. They asked to whom they wouldgive the land. it was agreed, following discussion. that the giftcould best be made to ourFulgharn‐Fulghum Famiy NationalFoundation. a 501 C (3) taxexempt foundation and. then later.could be conveyed to the properstate supported organization thatwil become the "owner"responsible for staffing andmainta'ning of the Lbrary.
