2010 Bosselman Leadership Conference

The 2010 Bosselman Leadership Conference was held March 24-25 at the Bosselman Conference Center at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island, Nebraska. “You Can Compete” by Bob Phibbs, “The Retail Doctor,” was the recommended reading for this year as Mr. Phibbs was also the keynote speaker, touching on sales and customer service in retail. This year’s theme was a western motif, “Ridin’ the Storm Out,” with the national economy continuing to be a concern. The conference room was decorated with a western theme, featuring split rail fence, Wanted posters of management, and cutouts of John Wayne, Dale Evans and Roy Rogers. The meeting kicked off with Bob Phibbs’ presentation, followed by a session on Legal and Human Resources topics presented by Craig Garrett, Bosselman Inc. Director of HR. Following lunch and a mini trade-show, Craig presented a refresher on last year’s “Real Colors” presentation, followed by information from the folks at PaySpot about the new payroll debit cards, and a session on Stress Management presented by Directions EAP.After the Conference had ended for the day, attendees were treated to an Evening at the Barn, being bussed to Babel’s Barn in Wood River for a dinner and awards ceremony. Entertainment included Quad Sound DJ and Karaoke, a mechanical bull by Gold Buckle Entertainment, and a Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament. Prizes were given for Best Dance Moves Male/Female (Carol Sample, Corporate HR and Neil Carpenter, Rapid City Subway), Best Karaoke Singing (Klay Kluver, BT&T), Best Cowboy Costume (Craig Garrett, Corporate HR), Best Cowgirl Costume (Tana Witte, Pump & Pantry), and Best Bull Ride (tie - Scott Ratliff, Bosselman Energy; and Randy Haines, Boss Truck Shops). Prize winners were selected by the DJs and the Mechanical Bull operators. Lasting until about 11 pm, the evening was enjoyed by many, dancing the night away and riding the mechanical bull multiple times. Poker Tournament winners were: 1st place: Aaron Burr, Grand Island Travel Center; 2nd place, Brent Johnson, Corporate Hospitality, and 3rd place, Mike Robinson, Twin Falls Boss Shop.Day two kicked off with a year in review by Charlie Bosselman, followed by a presentation on customer service. Jeanne Baer, of Creative Training Solutions, presented “The Good, The Mad, and The Ugly: Tough Customers”. After lunch, Chris Hanke, IT Director, discussed what was new in the IT Department, followed by a presentation on Employee Surveys feedback from Craig Garrett. The conference ended with a Q&A session with Chuck, Charlie, and Division Heads. We look forward to seeing everyone back again next year for the 2011 Bosselman Leadership Conference, tentatively set for March 2-3, 2011!

by Klay KluverBosselman Tank and Trailer enjoyed a successful start to 2010 with a sharp increase in new equipment sales. The leading category for new equipment sales this spring are stainless steel fertilizer trailers. BT&T is an authorized Polar Trailer distributor, well known for top of the line trailers of this type. One way to fertilize a lot of acres fast is the use of liquid fertilizer, and transporters of this product called on BT&T to provide the necessary equipment. At BT&T, we customize and sell these and many other types of equipment to fit a wide variety of applications: propane and anhydrous ammonia trailers, fuel and propane delivery vehicles, and almost anything that carries fertilizer, liquid feed, propane, gas and diesel. Testing, repair and parts sales for this equipment are a major part of the business as well. Another exciting new facet of our business is internet-based sales. In 2009, the decision was made to move forward with the development of bosselmantankandtrailer.com, the company’s official website. This new website, which is specific to products and services offered by BT&T, was developed by Corey Cline, Manager of BosselmanDirect.com, another Bosselman website. The official “go live” date was March 1, 2010. In order to “kick off” the website, BT&T offered all current customers and web users an opportunity to purchase parts at a discount through our first ever “Hot Buy” sale. The sale started March

16th in conjunction with the first day of the annual Nebraska Petroleum Marketers & Convenience Store A s s o c i a t i o n Convention and Trade Show held in Omaha, NE. Since opening the website, BT&T has had a major increase in parts sales ($20,000 in the first month) and equipment inquiries. It is an important part of marketing the company and its services. We have even sold parts to a U.S. military base in Iraq, as well as a petroleum marketing company in Canada. We must continue to focus on delivering high quality service to our local customers, but the new website allows us to reach an audience that we have never experienced business with before.

by Scott StranoAt Bosselman Carriers, we are still adapting to our new environment at the corporate office with personnel changes, new responsibilities and additions to our staff. Our third-party customer base has grown as well, for both our short and long haul divisions after adding several trucks and trailers over the past year.I am excited to see a boost in effectiveness and productivity in our division, creating a great deal of morale boosting within our business. Drivers are helping drivers and office employees are going above and beyond what is expected, while at the same time having fun and enjoying what they do. Our drivers at Bosselman Carriers and Bosselman Energy are some of the best drivers in the business today. They are very professional and well trained. They also play a very important part of training when it comes to new drivers. I take my hat off to the entire group and look forward to many rewarding times with each one that has contributed to our success. If you’re at the corporate office, stop in and say hi.

Renewable Fuels Division Newsby Krisha BosselmanWe are happy to announce that we have recently signed an agreement with Maple River Energy MRE (Galva, Iowa) to market all of MRE’s biodiesel production starting May 2010. The Galva plant is currently capable of producing 5 million gallons of clean-burning biodiesel per year. MRE has built a state-of-the-art facility that can use multiple feed stocks allowing flexibility in changing markets, which is necessary in today’s competitive environment. Additionally, we have renewed our contract to supply denaturant to Valero Renewables. We have been supplying Valero since they acquired 10 ethanol plants in 2009, in addition to being a great denaturant customer; Valero Energy is one of our biggest customers at the ethanol terminal racks. Valero Energy Corporation is a Fortune 500 company based in San Antonio, and is North America’s largest independent petroleum refiner and marketer. Last but not least, we want to announce the newest member of our team, Ashley Stevens. Ashley has joined our group to assist in administrative duties. She has provided much needed relief to our ever growing division!

I just wanted to take the time to write to let you know about some great service that I received from Troy and the guys at your Boss Shop in Rapid City, SD. I picked up an XTRA Lease trailer on 11/15/09 in Rapid City and found it to have a flat tire. I was instructed to take it to your shop to have it fixed. When I arrived at the Boss Shop, I was immedi-ately pulled into the bay and Troy began looking at the tire and determined that it needed replaced, upon further inspec-tion of the rest of the tires he found an-other that was also in need of replace-ment. Troy worked with XTRA lease to get both tires replaced and made sure that I left with a safe trailer to pull down the road.I want to thank Troy and all the guys in the shop for a job well done.Thank You

Letters From Our Customers

[Excerpted from a holiday letter] We stayed at my new favorite motel in Grand Island, Nebraska. It is the Motel 6 (#4265) that has the most accessible features of any motel that I stayed at. It had enough room between the desk and bed to be able to do a dance, it had wheelchair access on both sides of the bed, hangers, light switches, and electrical outlets within reach, and a large bathtub with a bench that folded down so that you can use the shower, too. If you are ever near there, it is worth stop-ping and spending the night. And, there is a truck stop with good food nearby, too.I want to thank the staff and whoever designed room 118. That room made my day! I hope more motel rooms are as accessible. Thank you for adding to my life; the facilities and staff were great!

- Joan Gray, Arizona

My husband and I had the pleasure of meeting the staff at your North Platte lo-cation Sunday night, March 14 at around 9:15 pm. We had a mishap with a tire on my car halfway between Ogallala and North Platte. On a Sunday night at that time, where do you go for help? That is a great question and at that time we did not have an answer and had no idea, we stopped at a convenience store and asked where we could get help with a tire and the clerk told us about the Flying J. On the way there we saw the sign for Boss Truck Shop and decided to take a chance. Well, I must tell you in today’s world not many people go out of their way to help others, but the employees of Boss Truck Shop did just that for us. In no time at all, they had us back on the road.I just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate what your employees did for us, and I am sure they have done it for others. Too many times we do not take the time to let others know how much we appreciate what they do for us, instead we complain when something goes wrong and never think twice about saying thank you for your help. Thank you Boss Truck Shop employees!

- David & Duana Landreth, Elwood, Nebr.

I got about the best service I have gotten in about a year and a half at the Bosselman Boss Shop in Jamestown, NM the other day. I watched them do my PM, because I was near the truck and it was the best, most thorough PM I have ever gotten. He checked everything he was supposed to. If everyone did such a great job then there wouldn’t be nearly as many broken down trucks on the side of the road. Any time I am in that area, and I need a PM, I am going to Bosselmans.

- Collette Damuth

Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know of the great service we received at the Boss Shop in Gallup, NM on Thursday 4/15/10. We were driving back to Lincoln, NE from San Diego, CA. and picked up a nail in our car tire. We went to the Boss Shop shortly after they opened to have the tire repaired. As to be expected they were very busy and indicated in may be 2 to 3 hours before they could repair the tire. However, after eating at Denny’s I walked over to see how it was going. I talked with Kit Christison and she was happy to in-form me that it would be few just a minutes and the tire would be finished. This was unexpected, but much appreciated! The tire was repaired much sooner than ex-pected. Hats off to all of the staff including mechanic #716 who was indicated as the technician who completed the repair. Great job and fast too! Please let your staff know of their wonderful service and attitudes. Thank you.

- Rick Lockhart, Lincoln, Nebr.

[Excerpted from Malia’s Blog] Since I hadn’t been able to get the tires checked right before we left, when I saw a truck service place (Bosselman) next to the Flying J in Brookshire, TX where we ate and filled up the ever-hungry motorhome with gas, I asked if they could check the tires for proper pressure and explained this was a last minute trip to see my aunt before she passed. The General Manag-er, Harm Asbury, was incredibly nice and stopped what he was doing, pulled out the truck that was in the bay, and had us drive in so he could have them aired up. They had a bit of trouble with one of the inside rear tires with the long valve stem, and it took a bit of time and doing. When the office lady came out and start-ed writing up the invoice, she at first said it would be $47.50 for checking all the tires (no charge for the air, thank God), but I still exclaimed, “Wow!” She said that was the usual charge for the big rigs they usu-ally work on, but once she realized I had only 6 tires, the total would be $15.I was satisfied with that, and by the time she got through writing up the ticket, Harm came back to the office and asked what she was doing. Then he said “No way - no charge for this.” I said it was per-fectly fine given the time and trouble and immediate service, but he just looked at me and said “I’m not going to take your money!” I was so taken aback by his kind-ness, I started blubbering and thanking him profusely. This was the first “angel” we met on this unusual odyssey - and not the last time I cried - sometimes from grief and other times from relief at how kind strangers can be.

As you know, the Christmas 2009 blizzard ranks among the worst snow storms of the past several decades. An event of the magnitude of this blizzard negatively impacts nearly all segments of the economy and population. Coming as it did over the Christmas weekend, the storm particularly impacted individuals and families traveling for the holidays.I would like to commend your employees [at the Aurora Pump & Pantry] for their responsiveness in dealing with the varied needs and challenges faced by the travel-ing public as a result of this major winter storm. I had the opportunity to observe your employees interacting with many concerned, and in some cases, frustrated motorists who were attempting to reach their destination for the holidays.I know that your business has many valu-able employees who assisted during this storm event. And while I am appreciative of the efforts of all of your employees, I would like to commend Michelle Wengler for the assistance she rendered to stranded or inconvenienced motorists during this time period. I either observed or have knowl-edge of her willingness to help motorists find the services or shelter they were seek-ing as a result of the Christmas storm and would hope you might convey my personal gratitude for a job well done under the most difficult of circumstances.

- Marlin L. Seeman, Mayor, Aurora, Nebr.

I want to thank you all for choosing me for a Bosselman Scholarship. This is such an honor, words cannot describe how much I appreciate this! Thank you!

Letters From Our CustomersOn February 9, 2010 around 6 pm, I was at the Flying J in Ogden, UT with a rig that needed a lot of attention. We looked out the window of the restaurant and saw your shop, we called, and were told we could come on over. One of the mechanics on duty at your shop was able to start on us right away when we arrived. His name was Tim, and in very short order he was able to diagnose and repair a dead short in the trailer we were pulling, assist in sliding our tandems, perform both a Federal DOT inspection and a full service on the tractor, along with replacing a few lights. It will be my pleasure to trust Tim with my equipment any time I need anything done. Your mechanic Tim made short work out of what could have easily become a long night. Everyone at your facility was professional and pleasant and the cost of this work was reasonable. I will be sure to continue to use your facili-ties across the country, and use both your Ogden location, and your mechanic Tim, as the standard they should measure up to. Thank you!

- Dan Amos, Payne Trucking driver

On December 29, one of Bosselman Carriers’ trucks hit an object in the road on the interstate in Houston, TX. The truck was damaged severely enough that it was not road worthy. The right tire, wheel, and fender were completely destroyed and ripped from the truck. The first thing we thought after the accident was that we were going to have to drive all the way to Houston to retrieve this truck and get the driver back on the road. Then we remembered there was a Boss Shop in Brookshire, and thought we would see if there was anything they could do to help us get this truck road worthy so we could get it back to Grand Island. The Boss Shop in Brookshire, in my opinion, went well beyond what anyone else would have done for us. The manager spent time finding a fender, tire and wheel that would work and put everything back together. They were able to bolt the fender on, straighten everything, and get him back on the road by the next morning. These guys did an amazing job and it is appreciated very much. Thanks

Customers who present their Rewards card at the point of sale earn points based on their purchases. These points can later be used towards purchases at participating Bosselman retail locations. The Boss Shop Rewards Program was opened to enrollment on December 15, 2009, and currently has 9,324 members. Boss Shop Rewards members that present their card during shop purchases generally earn 1 point per dollar spent (or more depending on the service). All PM work earns double points through June 30, 2010. The Boss Rewards Prize Case features items such as TVs, jewelry, binoculars, pocket knives, iPods, and Nintendo Wii game systems for customers who prefer to use their points on these prizes.Boss Shops Division Head Randy Haines says of the new Rewards Program, “Going nationwide with a Shop network and giving our customers a program like this will keep them coming back in our door, as well as giving the customer benefits. The company can also direct market back to the customer to provide them with relevant information about upcoming promotions and specials.”

The Max Rewards program is another branch of our Rewards Program, geared for driving business in the Bosselman Hospitality Division. The Max Rewards program was launched April 7th, 2010, and currently has 2,952 members. Max Rewards members earn 5 points per dollar spent in all Bosselman food concepts. An enrollment bonus of a free dessert up to a $4.50 value is currently being promoted in Bosselman retail food operations. Each time a Boss Shop or Max Rewards Program member uses their Rewards Card, they will be entered into a drawing for a new Smart Car. The Smart Car is currently being displayed at Boss Shops across the nation. In March, the Smart Car was put on display along with additional Bosselman marketing materials at the Mid-America Truck Show in Louisville. The winner of the car will be drawn in spring 2011. Stay tuned for more fantastic giveaways!Cross-marketing and detailed insights into customer behavior are key components to both loyalty programs. An effort to eliminate paper-based punch cards was also an important factor. Currently, testing and development is being done to integrate the Rewards Program into the Micros POS and to expand the program to the Pump & Pantry and Travel Center Divisions.

Cranes on Parade
