IntroductionSince its launch in 2003, DKTCOMEGA´s Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) CPE gateway has helped service providers in Scandinavia and Europe in cost-effectively deploying highly reliable triple-play services. The CPEs are based on open standards and a modular design, thereby allowing them to interoperate with third party network equipment. The CPEs are developed in close cooperation with leading broadband operators. As a consequence of the unique modular architecture, DKTCOMEGA offers the CPE in many different versions. This brochure can be used as inspiration for further discussion. DKTCOMEGA’s concept of the FTTH CPE gateways is to deliver a flexible modular product, which can be modified to meet specific needs. Besides the CPE gateways, DKTCOMEGA can deliver other access equip-ment such as splitters, laser transmitters and EDFAs for the RF overlay (refer to separate brochure).

Advantages

- The easiest way to add TV/FM services to a FTTH network- Cost optimized - cost per TV/FM channel / service- An open opportunity to add IP services at any time- No need for set-top boxes- Easy installation - ease of use - plug and play - Services: TV/FM, DVB-C, DVB-T, DAB

Page 5: FTTH CPE Gateway Dktc Omega

Product informationThis type of network is for operators offering only TV/FM services

(analogue and digital, QAM/QPSK), but who later would be inter-

ested in upgrading with IP services. This is an ideal solution for dis-

tributing analogue TV-signals to many TV sets and FM receivers.

The idea behind this type of network is to deploy a standard ana-

logue/digital RF head-end at the transmission side. The RF signal is

converted to an optical signal via a transmitter and sent through an

optical network to the subscriber. Here the signal is converted back

to an electrical signal via the DKTCOMEGA CPE gateway, which can

then be received by the majority of households.

The CPE gateway suits analogue TV/FM delivery from

45-862 MHz, as well as DVB-C/DVB-T digital television and DAB

standards. The high performance and low-noise broadband optical

receiver module provides an 88 dBµV output level with superior sig-

nal specifications, capable of handling a large number of radio and

television channels for simultaneous delivery.

The TV/FM converter has a built-in Optical AGC, which enables

a constant RF output independent of minor optical fluctuations

or level changes that can be caused by product lifetime or

environmental changes.

Advantages

- The most complete solution on the market (both analogue and digital services)- A well proven concept throughout Scandinavia since 2003- Simple and thus high dependable technological design- Practical with very easy installation

Page 9: FTTH CPE Gateway Dktc Omega

ftth cpe gateway extended with ip services and tv / fmProduct informationThis CPE gateway is for operators, who have decided to carry

both analogue and digital services, because most household

devices (radios and TVs) are still analogue. This is often the

most optimal solution for the end-user, where they can use

the IPTV signal for the main TV and the analogue signal for the

other TVs in the household.

To deliver these two signals simultaneously DKTCOMEGA offers a

CPE gateway with both a media converter and RF overlay, which

combines the digital services with the analogue signals. This

means that TV, internet and other services are delivered over

the same network - an optimal solution now and in the future.

The TV/FM converter has a built-in Optical AGC, which enables

a constant RF output independent of minor optical fluctuations

or level changes that can be caused by product lifetime or

environmental changes.

Advantages

- Analogue / digital management - the all-in-one solution- Complete control over all services- Easy upgradable, remotely- Flexible network interface, both hardware and software- Flexible design - configurable- Unique customer configuration settings

Page 11: FTTH CPE Gateway Dktc Omega

ftth cpe gateway with management

Product informationWith SNMP management the CPE gateway can be controlled via the

network with a wide variety of services. By adding management it

is possible to control the CPE gateway and thereby check status,

perform trouble shooting and update the CPE without the need to

make service calls.

To future-proof the CPE gateway it is possible to perform remote

software configurations and firmware upgrades. This can be done

either automatically when the gateway is rebooted, or on the fly by

the network administrator remotely connecting to the CPE gateway.

Also, the unique customer settings features means that operators

have a flexible way to provide services to the individual subscriber.

To control the provided services it is possible to turn the digital signal

on and off at the different LAN ports and to control the up- and

download speeds of the individual LAN port. Combined with VLAN

(IEEE 802.1Q) it is possible to assign different tasks to individual

ports; for example making one port destined for IPTV, one for VoIP

and one for internet. The management also allows remote trouble

shooting on the internet connection (fault locating), because it is

possible to monitor status, uptime and statistics of traffic

The DKTCOMEGA CPE gateway is offered with or without the RF

overlay (TV/FM). By adding management it is possible to turn the

RF module on/off and to monitor the quality of the TV/FM service,

making trouble shooting both in the network as well as in the

households much easier. Furthermore, the gateway is available in

two variants, 4 x 10/100 (item no. 79204) and 4 x 100/1000 (item no.

79403).

Product informationBuilt upon the strong DKTCOMEGA CPE/gateway product line, this is

a new series of gateways that offers true triple-play services to the

premises.

The gateway offers data services, analog telephony (VoIP ATA)

and CATV services in a single box. It can be remotely managed by

operators, thereby providing configuration flexibility and integration

with access networks.

The VoIP gateway option has two RJ-11 FXS/POTS ports. The plug-in

module can be installed in the 10/100 Mbps LAN & 100 Mbps WAN CPE

(79204) or in the 10/100/1000 Mbps LAN & 100/1000 Mbps WAN CPE

(79403). It is a plug-and-play option that does not require operator

assistance and thereby reduces operating costs.

The VoIP option is based upon SIP 2.0 signaling with an RTP/RTCP data

service. This allows normal analogue telephones to connect to the

CPE, where the service can handle two individual lines each with up

to five phones.

The VoIP gateway option makes it is easy for operators to offer triple-

play services to consumers. Built-in management allows for controlling

the CPE gateway, especially for configuring, status checking,

troubleshooting and updating the CPE without having to make service

calls.

The DKTCOMEGA CPE gateway is offered with the RF overlay (TV/

FM) as an option. Using management it is possible to activate and

deactivate the RF module.

features / benef its

Modular designThe DKTCOMEGA series of CPE gateways is designed in a

modular fashion. The standard modules include the

plastic gateway and the power supply, the other modules

are fully customizable with a range or different media

converters and of course the choice of TV/FM converter

with and without filter functionality.

DesignThe plastic enclosure has been developed in close

cooperation with operators and Danish designers and it

provides even more advantages to both the service pro-

vider and subscriber. The look of the gateway is charac-

terized by the welded lid, which fits perfectly into the

modern home, and in addition hides the control diodes

on the CPE. The gateway itself was designed for easy

installation and for optimal protection of the fibre. This

is achieved by the integrated fibre management and flex-

ible fibre access from all sides of the box including the

back side.

Power supplyThe integrated power supply is specifically designed

for long service life with the goal of minimizing service

calls. The unit is robust both in terms of potential

impact during transport, the durability after instal-

lation and the ability to handle power fluctuations.

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is used by network management systems to monitor network-attached devices for conditions that warrant administrative attention. It consists of a set of standards for network manage-ment, including an Application Layer protocol, a database scheme, and a set of data objects.

TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) is a very simple file transfer protocol with the functionality of a very basic form of FTP. It is easy to implement in a small amount of memory, and it is therefore useful for products with no data storage devices. In a CPE gateway it is used to make remote software configuration and fetch CPE configuration.

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a set of rules used by communication devices such as a computer, router or network adapter to allow the device to request and obtain an IP address and other parameters such as the default gateway, subnet mask, and IP addresses of DNS servers from a DHCP server.

VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) is a method of creating independent logical networks within a physical network. This helps in reducing the broadcast domain and assists in network administration by separating logical segments of a LAN that should not exchange data using a LAN. With a CPE gateway it can be used to dedicate one port to be used solely for IPTV or VoIP.

QoS (Quality of Service) refers to control mechanisms that can provide different priority to different users or data flows, or guarantee a certain level of performance to a data flow in accordance with requests from the application program or the internet service provider policy. Quality of Service guarantees are important especially for real-time streaming multimedia applications, such as voice over IP and IP-TV, since these often require a fixed bit rate and may be delay-sensitive.

DiffServ (Differentiated Services) is a computer networking architecture that specifies a simple and scalable mecha-nism for classifying, managing network traffic and providing quality of service guarantees on modern IP networks. DiffServ can be used to critical network traffic such as voice or video while providing simple best-effort traffic guar-antees to non-critical services such as web traffic or file transfers.

Class of Service (CoS) is a 3 bit field within a layer two Ethernet frame header when using IEEE 802.1Q. It is a way of managing traffic in a network by grouping similar types of traffic (for example VoIP) together and treating each type as a class with its own level of service priority. It specifies a priority value of between 0 (best-effort) and 5 (priority real-time data) that can be used to differentiate traffic.

Layer 3 is a part of the OSI seven layer model – a layered, abstract description for communications and computer network protocol design. Layer 3 is the network layer, which performs network routing functions and report delivery errors. The best known example of a layer 3 protocol is the Internet Protocol (IP).

Traffic shaping is an attempt to control network traffic in order to optimize or guarantee performance, low latency, and/or bandwidth by delaying packets. Traffic shaping deals with the concepts of classification, queue disciplines, enforcing policies, congestion management, quality of service, and fairness.

Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) – Any equipment provided to the customer at their premises.

Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is a modulation scheme which conveys data by changing (modulating) the amplitude of two carrier waves. These two waves, usually sinusoids, are out of phase with each other by 90º and are thus called quadrature carriers.

Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK): Used to modulate digital information onto an RF carrier when satellite trans-ponders are used to transmit MPEG 2 signals. Rather than using the amplitude or frequency of the carrier to convey the information, QPSK modulates the phase of the carrier signal. Depending on the data being modulated, the carrier is forces into one of four different phase states known as a symbol.
