At next Wednesday’s session, we begin our exploration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, specifically – of how and why the candidates are called by God to this sacrament; why and how the candidates are responsible for their rejoin-der to that call; of why they should, with more intensity, spiritually prepare with the Sacrament of Reconciliation and making more time for prayer.

SCHOOL FUNDING DRIVE More than seven hundred people gathered in our gymna-sium to celebrate the continuation of a dream that began in 1871. Back then Catholic youth needed a place to be Catholic without being told they were stupid, strange or foreign. That effort was so successful that now Catholics can serve in any position or job with the expectation that no one will question their competence or loyalty because of their faith. At this time our Catholic school serves a more diverse group of kids, some Catholic, some Christian and some not knowing any faith. Thus, the need for Catholic Schools is even greater now than it was then. Today, most kids grow up without any religious background. St Xavier Catholic School uses excellent classroom environ-ments to give kids a window into the goodness of Gods' creation that they get little of elsewhere. It supports the goals of Catholic parents to raise children in the Church and for them to have a great learning experience. The school hires great teachers who are certified to teach anywhere in Kansas and many other states as well. The school is accredited by an independent accreditation agency. Our students include Eagle Scouts, members of the Na-tional Honor Society and members of Future Business Leaders of America. Our students are state medalists in music, band, scholars bowl, science and a dozen other activities. The Board of Regents curriculum and the high-est grading standard in the region demands academic performance from every student. The 700 people gathered in our gymnasium celebrated the past and contributed to the future. Pre-enrollment will start March 2 and St Xavier Parish would be pleased to invite you to look at enrolling your children, grandchil-dren, nieces and nephews in a place where being Catholic is a mission. Through the efforts of kids, parents, alumni and parishioners more than $70,000 was raised already with three weeks left in our special fund drive. Thanks to all who gave - our faith is our hope.

The Future Business Leaders of America District III Con-ference was held at Hayden High School, Topeka, KS, on Monday, January 19. In addition to the business meet-ing, the students participated in events testing their busi-ness knowledge. The students will attend the State Con-ference in March in Topeka. The St. Xavier High School Student Council hosted a "Penny War" competition between the 7th-12th grade classes as part of a fundraiser during Catholic Schools Week. Students put pennies in their class jar in hopes of winning, while other classes attempted to sabotage the total by adding nickels, dimes and quarters to their oppo-nent's jars to be deducted from the penny total. The penny war generated $421.54 and the students donated it to the Continue the Tradition Campaign Fund. Pictured are the Class Presidents, Student Council Presi-dent and Student Council Sponsor: Taryn Tanguay (7th grade); Jacob Keating (8th grade); Teresa Balderrama (9th grade); Cayley Wert (10th grade); Deb Breidenstein (StuCo Sponsor); Adam Carpenter (StuCo President); Ty-ler Tanguay (11th grade); and Peter Paras (12th grade)
