Foreword
Adrian Pickles – Head of Centre 2011
I am delighted to be writing the foreword to this report. It has been compiled by the FSC Invertebrate Challenge
Project Officer, Pete Boardman using the information available from a wide variety of sources, records and
archive material. Although there are over 1750 records included we recognise that this is very much a first
edition. I am looking forward to seeing an even thicker second edition in the next year or two.
The FSC was originally established as the Council for the Promotion of Field Studies and staff in the early years
were very definitely field scientists who worked with groups of learners. Over recent years curriculum pressure
has shifted our organisational focus towards the classroom needs of our school students. This report is a result of
efforts to maintain and strengthen our work in the field of natural history and recognise the importance of
knowing what particular places are like.
It is fitting that the inspiration behind the report was work Paul Holmes and Charles Sinker at Malham Tarn in
the 1950s. In 1957 Charles Sinker moved to Shropshire as the founding warden FSC Preston Montford and was
highly influential in many areas including the identification and description of the County flora and establishing
the Shropshire Conservation Trust which has since transformed into the Wildlife Trust. Recently Robin Sutton
the Assistant Warden at Malham Tarn has built on the work of Holmes and Sinker and shown that this sort of
work is still relevant and important for students in the 21st century. The appointment of my predecessor Sue
Townsend as Biodiversity Learning Manager for the FSC is another significant step in maintaining the profile of
natural history in inspiring environmental understanding.
Over the years the Preston Montford site has developed and changed. Researchers, University groups and
participants on adult courses have collected species lists and described the geomorphology and hydrology of the
site but there has been no attempt to collate or compile all these records. In my background research about how
to do this I have yet to come across anywhere that has an integrated holistic scheme to record what everything
known about a site. My thanks go to Pete Boardman and our Preston Montford higher education placement
students for rising to this challenge and producing this report as the first result.
For the future we really need to add any records that we have not been able to track down. At the same time we
need to find ways to capture future records as well making records accessible records in written or graphical
form. Therefore this excellent report is only a staging post on an ongoing journey, so please do contribute any
records or ideas about how to manage the process.
Ms Sue Townsend – Head of Centre 1994-2011
Going in to work as Head of Centre, I rather hopped that I would do more in the biological recording story
attached to the Preston Montford Estate. I managed a few habitat creation schemes (meadow, woodland, nectar
garden and sewage system) – but singularly failed to design or implement any monitoring or long term
recording projects. I am addressing my short-falls though enrolling on a Masters Biological Recording course –
and am delighted to see the Centre addressing the gaps I left behind me through writing a baseline list of the
records found to date. I know there may be omissions of taxa, recorders, past staff notes and important
information. PLEASE all you readers – do not be offended by this – and use this review as a forum to add your
thoughts and records.

Introduction
Whilst optimistically claiming to produce a report covering more than 50 years of wildlife history at Preston
Montford Field Centre, realistically we have to acknowledge that this is not really the case. Biological
recording as a science has perhaps only been recognised more fully as a way of properly cataloguing the
biodiversity of a site in more recent years, though of course many records have been made at Preston
Montford that are now lost to us. Indeed the advent of biological recording software relatively freely available
to recorders has aided this data trawl of “PM records”. This is not to say there may not be an archive
somewhere of the wildlife comings and goings at Preston Montford that awaits discovery; however we must
content ourselves with relatively contemporary lists.
There are some exceptions though. Shropshire’s botanical history is well archived and researched thanks to a
strong Shropshire Flora Group and the fact that the first warden at Preston Montford, Charles Sinker (who
died in 2010) was a renowned botanist who made many records at the site, some of which are noted in The
Rare Plants of Shropshire (Lockton & Whild, 2005). A Rothampsted light trap has nightly been recording
moth diversity at the site since June 1966 and so a wealth of moth data is available to us. Preston Montford
was amongst the top twenty most diverse moth sites that are part of the Rothampsted scheme in 1998, 2000,
2001, 2002, 2003 and 2008 (The UK Light trap network newsletters, 2001-2010).
Preston Montford also played its part in the development of modern natural history and other sciences. The
FSC published its own science journal Field Studies from 1959 to 2003. Articles published from Preston
Montford (though not necessarily focusing upon the site per se) included such luminaries as Thomas Townley
Macan, Peter Toghill, Margaret Redfern, and of course Charles Sinker. These papers can be downloaded from
the FSC website (www.field-studies-council.org/fieldstudies).
Data has also often been generated by course tutors (known as “associate tutors” within the FSC) and course
attendees studying at Preston Montford on an array of courses too long to list here. In addition to these
“leisure learning” courses and University courses, in recent years there has been added courses from lottery-
funded projects such as the Biodiversity Training Project (2006-2010) and the Invertebrate Challenge (2011-
2013) which have generated data. Also currently the Invertebrate Challenge project officer manages the
Shropshire Ecological Data Network (SEDN) invertebrate database from which all other invertebrate records
(except moths) have been sourced for this report.
Given the wide gaps in our knowledge of what exactly has been recorded at Preston Montford over the years
we accept that there are many potential omissions in the species lists published below. Indeed in some cases
whole taxonomic classes or orders are unknown to us, so if you know of records or species seen at the Field
Centre that are not included in this report we’d be very grateful to receive them. We hope that this will
become an annual report highlighting the wildlife seen each year at the Field Centre by staff and visitors alike.

Scope of this report
Preston Montford Field Centre sits to the east of the River Severn, the south of the A5 Shrewsbury bypass and
to the west of the B4473 at Montford Bridge (map 1). It is bounded at its southern edge by Preston Montford
Farm. The site centroid grid reference is SJ433147 and the site sits solely in tetrad SJ4314. This report lists
wildlife within this site boundary only.
Map 1 – Preston Montford Field Centre (maps.google.co.uk)
Map 2 – Breakdown of habitat and other features at Preston Montford (Karen Jeffreys)

The site is approximately 12 hectares in size and comprises grassland, woodland and river bank, as well as
ponds (including a sewage system), and stands of arboretum trees. Map 2 shows the breakdown of habitats at
the site.
The taxonomic scope is potentially open to anything that has been identified at the Field Centre between the
years 1956-2011 and should in theory include diatoms, microscopic life, and algae; however we have no
records of such life. Therefore, table 1 lists taxonomic groups covered within this report, or those that we hope
we will be able to supply details of in coming years, and the approximate date range of the data. Also listed
are the compilers of the data or those consulted, during the compilation of this document. Any uncommon or
rare species identified are highlighted within the individual group / order / family reports.
A meteorological station has also been maintained at Preston Montford for a number of years and so a
summary of “met” data is included in this report.

Comparison with previous years
Rainfall figures for 2011 compared with figures for the previous decade show less rain throughout the year
with the exception of late winter (Jan – Feb), where rainfall was considerably higher than the ten year average,
and to a lesser extent the year end.

Important Species
A number of species listed within this report are
considered important for their conservation status.
Where possible these are listed within individual
taxonomic lists, written in red. These comprise
Shropshire axiophytes (plants) and axiozoans
(other taxa than plants), and nationally rare
species.
All breeding birds are protected by law. Bats also
have legal protection plus other selected
mammals.
Bryophytes
It is hoped that a list of mosses recorded at Preston
Montford will be included in the 2012 report.
Vascular Plants
Prior to the 1950s recording of Vascular Plants at
Preston Montford had been sporadic, with the first
record being made in 1878 for Cowslip by Canon
T. Butler. Since then more thorough recording has
been made often of critical taxa (Rubus and Salix)
by national experts visiting the centre. Records
have also been made by visiting students and
tutors. The plant lists are in alphabetical order
rather than taxonomic order and have been split
down to ferns, grasses, sedges and rushes, then
flowering plants.

Insects – true flies
Despite a dipterist working on site since 2006 the
fly records accumulated at Preston Montford are
admittedly lacking to what they might be. Also the
annual visit of the Dipterists Forum for their
workshops is during the late winter, before the
spring field season gets properly underway.
Having said this, the fly situation was remedied to
a certain extent over the December of 2011, the
