ECONOMIC AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES: SENIOR PHASE GRADE: 7, 8 & 9 Multi-Grade Lesson Plan (Can be adapted for Mono Grades) Introduction · This lesson plan has been developed to accommodate Multi-grade teaching for the senior phase. · This lesson plan can also be adapted for Mono-grade teaching. Grade 9 Ask a Grade 9 leaner to read the “green bubble speech” on the poster. · Explain to the learners that Neyo’s business has grown. · Ask learners if they think Neyo can run the business on his own. Learners should give reasons for their answers. · Based on the learners’ responses, explain that Neyo will need to delegate some of the business functions to other employees in order to manage the business more effectively. · Refer the learners to the relevant section in their text books. · Randomly select learners and ask them to read from their text books. · Explain to the learners the different functions of a business. · Inform the learners that each function must work well with other functions to achieve the objectives of the business. The functions the learners need to know for this lesson are Administration, Purchasing, Financing, Marketing, Human resources and Risk management. · Explain in detail the characteristics, role and importance of each function. · Give Activity 3 to the Grade 9 learners to complete. Monitor all the learners while they work on their activities. Give support as and when required. Mark learners’ work as you walk around to support them. · Grade 8 learners work on Activity 2 while the teacher works with the Grade 9 learners. · Learners listen and respond to the teacher as s/he explains and introduces the concepts of SWOT analysis. · Learners ask the teacher questions that will further clarify their understanding. · Learners read from their textbooks and ask clarity-seeking questions. · Grade 9 learners work on Activity 3 while the teacher works with and checks on the Grade 7 and 8 learners. Opportunities can result in a success to a business. - T” stands for the threats to the business. Threats are things outside the business that could work against the success of a business. Sometimes a business cannot control the threat, so it has to find ways to control the impact on the business. · Give the Grade 7 learners Activity 1 to complete on the SWOT analysis for Neyo’s Apple Boutique. Grade 8 and 9 Ask a Grade 8 learner to read the “blue speech bubble” on the poster. · Ask what type of a business is owned by Neyo? Which products are sold in Neyo’s spaza shop? · Is Neyo’s spaza shop a formal or an informal business? Give reasons. · Write all the responses on the board. · Explain to the learners that since the “spaza” shop is owned by Neyo, he can be considered as a sole trader.
