Promises made, promises kept

Dear friends of Franklin Square,

Someday, 2010 may be thought of as the year Franklin Square came of age. Completionand opening of the stunning $175 million, seven-story Patient Care Tower at FranklinSquare keeps a very solemn promise to the community. With the help of visionarysupport, we have successfully envisioned, supported and delivered this magnificent newmedical facility. From the ground up, the health needs of a growing 21st centurycommunity have been built in.

As the profiles in this special edition of as promised reveal, the Franklin Squarecommunity is notable for intense devotion and great generosity. From the longstandingvolunteerism and leadership of Bob Romadka and his family to the perceptiveness ofdonors Scott and Yvonne Barhight, the greatest gifts these modern philanthropists bringus is their engagement and dedication.

Their appreciation is well earned. In this issue, read about five key Franklin Squareassociates who, in various ways, led the way to completion of the Patient Care Tower. Ourmission of delivering excellent community-based healthcare today stands on a firmerfoundation because of their contributions to this crucial project.

To all of you who have supported us in this dynamic campaign to “Keep the Promise,” tobring healthcare facilities and services in Eastern Baltimore County fully into the 21st

century, our deepest thanks.

For those who will benefit from these enhancements, welcome to Franklin Square’s newPatient Care Tower!

Sincerely,

”Welcome to

Franklin Square’s new

It’s nearly here. After six years of petitions and paperwork, blueprints and planning, the gleaming new $175 millionFranklin Square Patient Care Tower is set to open its doors injust a few short weeks. All agree that the 356,000 square-footfacility is extraordinary in every regard, with spacious, all-private patient rooms, an expanded and modern emergencydepartment, a larger pediatric center (to be called the ToddHeap Family Pediatric Center) and other state-of-the-artfeatures designed to optimize quality care delivery and ensurea positive patient experience.

Still, there’s more than meets the eye in the creation of thePatient Care Tower. Over the past six years, a remarkableprocess of collaboration has unfolded, one that has literallyengaged the entire Franklin Square community in the design

of the new building. “Our development process for the PatientCare Tower was a very open and collaborative approachinvolving the Board, administration, physicians, and nursingleadership, all with one shared goal—to serve the patient withthe best quality care available,” says Hospital Board ChairDebra Doyle. “This attitude is the cornerstone of why FranklinSquare has been so successful.”

The best buildings are always made of more than bricks andmortar. They also represent the best thinking and passionateideals of people who have contributed to their successfulconstruction. Let’s meet five of those individuals, who whilerepresenting countless others, have each played a uniquerole in making the new Patient Care Tower a true ground-breaking event.

Towering achievementOver the past six years, they have contributed their talents behind the scenes toa once-in–a-lifetime cause. Now, meet five men and women who have helped tomake the new Patient Care Tower at Franklin Square a complete success.

As Franklin Square’s Vice President for Patient Care andChief Nursing Officer, Larry Strassner is justifiably proud.“We have one of the best nurse-to-patient ratios of anyhospital in the state,” he says. “The executive team hasinvested significantly in nursing and quality care. They realizethat the RN at the bedside is key to us achieving the qualityand service our patients deserve.”

But he is equally proud of how the design of the new PatientCare Tower’s units reflect the best practices in primary care, including many suggested by Franklin Square’s own nurses. As a member of the Hospital’s Executive Steering Committee,Strassner was “involved pretty much from conception” in thedevelopment of the Tower’s design. Through many rounds offeedback from the nursing staff, a highly efficient and patient-centric model for the Tower’s clinical units was developed.“Everything is designed to bring care more effectively to thepatient,” he notes.

To start, the new U-shaped patient units in the ICU will allshare an identical floor plan and facilities layout, so thatnurses transferred from one department to another can get upto speed quickly without re-orientation. In addition, the unitsare designed to direct nurses away from the nursing stationand toward the patient’s bedside. Between every two patientrooms is an alcove that contains a satellite workstation that isnetworked with the unit’s central nursing station. There, thenurse can work productively on a laptop while remainingphysically closer to his or her patients.

Even the patient rooms feature practical design elements.A family-centered area with a pullout sleeper sofa is locatedby the room window, separated from the attending nurse’sworkspace. “Our belief is that families help patients heal, sowe want to incorporate them into a patient’s care,” saysStrassner. “This room design will allow our nurses to workeffectively in a way that’s not disruptive to the family.”

It really is ahealing environment.”

Dr. Scott Krugman isn’t kidding around. As Chairman of theDepartment of Pediatrics at Franklin Square, he’s beenfocused for the last 12 years on developing the Hospital’semergency pediatric services into a nationally recognized unitfor its quality of care. Now with the advent of the new PatientCare Tower, he sees the unit’s standard of care gaining evenmore ground. “Overall, our expectations have been more thanmet with our new unit in the Patient Care Tower,” he says.“We’ll be able to continue to deliver the same high qualitycare, just in a better place.”

Dr. Krugman says that early involvement in the planningstages of his unit was key. “We were involved in everything —from space design to the number of rooms,” he says. “Thearchitects were very inclusive and made us all feel like wewere part of the process.” As a result, the current model of the

integrated Pediatric Emergency Department and InpatientUnit will be maintained in the new Patient Care Tower.Co-located with the Adult ED, the Pediatric ED will featurea separate waiting area and triage, and flex care rooms close byto treat minor injuries and illnesses. More serious cases will betreated in the Pediatric ED and Inpatient area. Dr. Krugmanalso points to the Pediatrics inpatient unit as “more patient-friendly and quieter,” with colorful, larger rooms and allottedspaces for visiting family members. In addition, both ED andInpatient rooms are being wired for electronic records access,so physicians can have bedside documentation for all care.

“Our vision always has been to create the best and mostcomplete pediatric unit in the area,” says Dr. Krugman. “We’revery excited about our new space.”

We’ll be able tohandle anything.”

Our mission is providing spiritual care to all people.”The Chaplain:

When she first heard about the new Patient Care Towerproject six years ago, Reverend Cherie Smith felt instantlyinspired. As the Chaplain of Franklin Square Hospital Center, she had long wished for a larger, more welcoming space forthe Hospital’s Chapel that was more central to foot traffic.

Wasting no time, she made her case. “I framed it for seniormanagement that what we would be adding to the newbuilding would not be a church, but a symbol of FranklinSquare’s commitment to see every patient, family member, and staff member as a complete human being,” she recalls.Rev. Smith got her wish; a new and dramatically designedChapel in the new Patient Care Tower.

Painted in restful greens and browns, the new Chapel will offermore than three times the space of the original, with seating for20 or more. Chairs were chosen instead of pews in order toprovide the greatest amount of flexibility in using the interfaith

space. Located just off the Main Lobby of the new Patient CareTower, “The new Chapel will make our dimension of spiritualcare much more visible to our patients and their families as theycome and go,” says Rev. Smith.

The most dramatic feature of the new Chapel is an all-glasswall that frames the outdoor Meditation Garden. Thesupported Garden, was developed through a contribution froma single donor, it contains comfortable seating, a windingwalkway, and fountain. “It is beautiful from a meditative andprayerful perspective,” Rev. Smith notes, “but it is also ahealing tool for patients who want to get a breath of freshair in a private space.”

An interfaith service was held on Sunday, October 24 todedicate the new Chapel and Meditation Garden at FranklinSquare.

Debra Doyle is one busy healthcare executive. As theExecutive Vice President of Health and Operations forErickson Retirement Communities, she is responsible for23,000 residents, 12,000 employees, and operations in 12states. But she makes time to serve as Chair of the Board ofDirectors at Franklin Square. “It’s my passion to make surethat Franklin Square remains the first choice of our patients,”she says.

In October, Doyle became the Board’s new Chair. It’s theculmination of a six-year experience as a board member, timewhich was largely spent on planning for and then developingthe new Patient Care Tower. “One of the most pivotal piecesof work the Board has accomplished during this developmentprocess was the required coordination with communityrelations, government relations, regulatory agencies, and theMedStar System itself,” she notes. “Happily, we’ve been able

to deliver on our promises to all of the stakeholders involvedin this project, both internally and externally, at every step ofthe way.”

Doyle is particularly proud of the Board’s accomplishmentsin managing transition discussions with the operational teamsover the past 18 months, making sure their units could movesafely into the new building without losing a beat on serviceand quality. “We as a Board pushed back very hard in sayingthat we’ll wait until we are ready to be able to move everybodyinto the new building together.”

Doyle is very focused on the Hospital’s ongoing mission.“My main focus is to make sure that we continuallystrive to improve the quality of care and the qualityof services at the Hospital,” she says.

Taking the LEED in Green

Given Franklin Square’s ongoing commit-

ment to sustainability through its “Be Square,

Be Green” program, it’s no surprise that

the new Patient Care Tower and Emergency

Departmenthave been designed and constructed

with the same commitment in mind. Through-

out the building, every effort has been made

to use sustainable building products that

follow Leadership in Energy and Environmental

Design (LEED) principles.

It’s been a great adventure.”The Facilities Director:

It’s his job. Over the past five years since the Patient Care Tower firstbroke ground, Dennis Kephart has been the point person at FranklinSquare in overseeing that project’s development. As Director of Facilitiesand the Tower Project, Kephart has managed a broad array ofresponsibilities, from the initial Request for Information and Request forProposal selection and the coordination of vendors to providing ownerrepresentation throughout the design and construction processes.

Kephart admits that the most difficult phase of the project was designingto budget, given some of the challenges presented by the site. The PatientCare Tower was given a relatively small footprint, and so requiredadditional height to the design. Fortunately the Hospital was given aneasement on their height restriction covenant, which allowed the extralevels to be added.

As representative for the owner, Kephart also was responsible for coordinatingreview and feedback on the building’s design and infrastructure betweenthe Hospital’s Associate user groups and the building’s architect and designer.“That responsibility included bringing together the Hospital’s user groups withthe design team to ensure that what was being designed worked for these groupsand also remained within budget. That was not a small task,” he smiles.

However, Kephart has nothing but praise for the overall process. “ThePatient Care Tower you see today is the work of so many—seniormanagement and Board members, MedStar, department leadership, anduser groups that included line staff,” he notes. “This is not the work of afew, but of many people engaged in creating the best possible patientand family experience.”

Franklin Square has always been part of G. Scott BarhightEsq.’s life. His family has lived in Middle River sinceWorld War II and he has served on the Hospital Board ofDirectors and Foundation Board of Directors for ten years, and has served as Chair on both boards.

“Franklin Square is my community hospital,” Scott says.“My parents, wife and I have all received care thererecently. Franklin Square is a key institution in thecommunity. Not only does the Hospital provide outstandinghealthcare, it’s also the largest employer in southeastBaltimore and serves the community through a variety ofoutreach programs.”

Scott and his wife Yvonne, principal at a Baltimore Countypublic school, have both done much over the years to helpthe Hospital thrive. In addition to Scott’s service onthe board and Yvonne’s participation with the HospitalAuxiliary, the Barhights are generous donors. They recentlymade a donation to the new Patient Care Tower. The

Meditation Garden will bear the family name in honor ofScott’s grandmother who was a volunteer and earlysupporter of bringing Franklin Square to its current home.

Scott and Yvonne are excited about the opening of theTower and what it will mean to the community. “Not onlywill the building be a state-of-the-art medical facility, it willalso stand as a statement of who Franklin Square is andhow the community should see itself,” Scott believes. “Thebuilding of the Tower is a transformational event for thiscommunity.”

Adds Yvonne, “Franklin Square is like family to me. Lastyear, a hospital outreach project provided backpacks andschool supplies for the children at my school which helpedso many families. Scott and I are happy to support FranklinSquare for what the Hospital has done for our familyand what they provide for the community.”

At first glance, a bank and a hospital may not seem to have much in common. It’s whenyou look past the business these institutions are in to the people they serve that you’llfind the connection.

Rosedale Federal Savings & Loan has been based in the community thatsurrounds Franklin Square since 1908. Not only has Rosedale Federal been animportant part of the community for more than 100 years because it meets itsneighbors’ banking needs, Rosedale is also very active in supporting a range ofcommunity organizations.

That support includes a recent $100,000 pledge to Franklin Square’s Patient CareTower campaign. Rosedale Federal President and CEO Thomas Wintz, a memberof the Hospital’s Board of Directors, recognized the commitment that FranklinSquare was making with the addition of the Patient Care Tower and felt thatit was important that his institution support that commitment.

“Franklin Square and Rosedale Federal have a shared history of serviceto this community,” says Tom. “We have a longstanding shared missionof providing safe, high quality, excellent service and education toimprove the overall health of the people we serve.”

He feels that the tower will be a physical symbol of FranklinSquare’s commitment to the people of this community and it’simportant that the leaders in the community support it.

“The majority of our branches surround the Franklin Squarecampus. Many Rosedale Federal customers and employees areserved by the hospital,” he adds. “Sustaining and enhancing thiskind of state-of-the-art medical facility is important to the entirecommunity. For all of us at Rosedale Federal, it is crucial that weensure the overall well-being of our community—both financialhealth and medical health are fundamental for a community tothrive and grow.”

A facility for givingCarroll W. Reid, Jr., Franklin Square night stationary engineer

“Everyone should give back to the place where they work.”That’s the firm belief of Carroll W. Reid, Jr., Night StationaryEngineer at Franklin Square Hospital Center. Carroll hasworked at Franklin Square for 23 years and has always beenan active supporter of the Hospital, raising money for theNICU in the early ’90s, making a large donation with his wifeto help build the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Cancer Institute, and serving as a member of the capital campaign committeeto help raise the funds needed for several new facilities.

Most recently he and his wife made a very generous $5,000donation to the Patient Care Tower campaign, a project hebelieves will have a tremendous positive impact on theentire Franklin Square community. “The new Tower will bestate of the art,” he explains. “It will help physicians providethe best care possible and speed up wait times in our verybusy Emergency Department. The new facilities will alsomake the experience of receiving care more comfortablefor patients because everyone will have a private room.”

For Carroll, Franklin Square is more than the place where heworks. He, his wife and two children live in the communityjust three miles away from the Hospital and receive theirmedical care from Franklin Square physicians. His oldestson, Carroll Reid III, also works at Franklin Square.

Carroll has noticed that more Associates contribute to thefundraising campaigns at Franklin Square than at otherworkplaces. “I believe that everyone who works at FranklinSquare should give back,” he notes. “Not only is this youremployer, many of us also use the services that the Hospitalprovides.”

He adds, “When you give to Franklin Square, you knowexactly where the money is going and how it will be used.Your donation helps the Hospital to get the facilities andequipment needed to help meet our patients’ needs. It alsohelps Franklin Square continue critical community outreachand education. The new Patient Care Tower is just one moreway Franklin Square is taking care of the community, providinggreat services right here so people don’t have to go far tofind the care and services they need.”

The Romadka family has called Eastern Baltimore Countyhome since the early 1950s when Bob Romadka opened hislaw practice in Essex. In 1961, when Franklin Square decidedto move from Baltimore City, Bob and his wife Eleanor wereinstrumental in bringing the hospital to its current location.

Nearly 50 years later, Bob, Eleanor and their childrencontinue to be ardent supporters of Franklin Square. Not onlydid the family make a generous donation to the Patient CareTower project, Bob is also Chair of the campaign to raise $10million to support this major expansion.

Bob has served on the Hospital’s Operating Board in severalpositions; Eleanor has been a member of the Auxiliary and anactive fundraiser. “Franklin Square is an anchor in ourcommunity,” explains Eleanor. “We believe it is important togive back to the community and that’s something we taughtour four children.”

The Romadka’s daughters, Leslie Kaminski and JeanRomadka, learned well. Jean served on the Hospital Operating

Board for a decade and is now on the Auxiliary Board. Lesliejoined the Foundation Board two years ago. She and herhusband Bob hosted a successful campaign event at theirhome that featured fellow Franklin Square supporterBaltimore Raven Todd Heap. Even their daughter, Rene’, gotinvolved with the Hospital, working as a junior volunteer.

Says Jean, “I remember helping our parents raise money tobuild the Hospital. After high school, I worked in MedicalRecords when the hospital was one building with two floors. How things have changed! I have always enjoyed being part ofthe growth of the hospital and am proud to follow in myparents’ footsteps.” Adds Leslie, “My dad had great foresightbeing part of the effort to bring Franklin Square to the area, and now that vision has come full circle with his role as Towercampaign chair.”

Notes Bob Romadka, “The Tower will be an outstandingresource for the community and my family is proud to helpFranklin Square keep this promise.”

A promise worth celebratingIt’s not often you find a hospital lobby filled with guests dancing the night away, but

the Celebrate the Promise Donor Event was no ordinary celebration. Hosted by the

Franklin Square Hospital Center Foundation, the event brought together over 200

guests for an evening of music, gourmet cuisine, dancing and guided tours of key areas

in the new Patient Care Tower.

Arriving guests were greeted by the sounds of a brass quintet at the building’s entrance.

Once inside, donors, members of the Hospital’s Operating and Foundation Boards,

legislators and members of the tower contracting team enjoyed a raw bar, hors d’oeuvres

and cocktails as well as dancing to live music. Franklin Square Hospital Center President

Dr. Adrienne Kirby, MedStar Health Executive Vice President of Operations for the

Baltimore Region Carl Schindelar and Hospital and Foundation Board Member Scott

Barhight shared her excitement about the opening of the Patient Care Tower and

expressed their gratitude for the hard work and support of everyone who helped make

the tower a reality. The Foundation is very thankful to event underwriters COMCAST

and The Classic Catering People for underwriting the costs for this fantastic celebration.

“This event was one small way we can say thank you to our supporters,” says

The 25th annual Franklin Square Golf Open offered golfers

and donors a social outing that doubled as a highly successful

fundraising venture. Celebrating its Silver Anniversary, the

September 27 event raised $100,000 from corporate sponsors

and participants in support of the new Patient Care Tower project.

Held once again at Hayfields Country Club, the 25th Anniversary

Golf Open brought out 104 eager golfers to take on 18 holes of

golf on a championship course at one of the nation’s premier

golf facilities. According to Megan Doty, Franklin Square

Development Coordinator, “we are especially gratified that the

25th Anniversary Golf Open occurred the same year as the

opening of the new Patient Care Tower.”

Participants in the daylong outing also enjoyed a patio brunch,

unlimited refreshments on the course, a cocktail awards

reception and a special dinner at Hayfields Country Club.

Paving the way to the futureOn Thursday, September 16th, a special Entry Plaza Event held in the Patient Care Tower lobby honored donors who are literally

paving the way to Franklin’s Square’s future. Featuring remarks from Franklin Square President Adrienne Kirby, PhD, the event

recognized and thanked donors who received bricks and pavers to be inscribed with names and tributes and placed in the Patient

Care Tower Entry Plaza. Donors had the opportunity to view their brick or paver installed in the new pathway.

Attended by 125 donors, the Brick and Paver Dedication

Event was a very exciting celebration. Those donating $2,500

received a 4 x 8 brick to personally inscribe as they wished.

Donors contributing $5,000 or more received an 8 x 8 paver

to personally inscribe. Many inscriptions included a donor’s

name or family member names, tributes in honor or in memory

of a loved one, significant quotes or sayings and dedications.
