Preface

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have been widely used in civil engineering

due to their superior mechanical and chemical performance in comparison with the

conventional metal materials. In the 1980s, FRP began to be used in the field of civil

engineering due to the impact of “Concrete Crisis.” In the mid 1990’s the application of

FRP significantly increased following Japan's Kobe earthquake and subsequently FRP

quickly developed into an important means for seismic reinforcement. Since then, the

application of FRP has evolved from the initial retrofitting and reconstruction to building

new structures. A wide range of FRP products have developed from FRP fabric/plate, to

a variety of FRP bars/cables, grids and profiles. Currently, the range and forms of

applications of FRP’s are being more widely explored on internal reinforcements,

near-surface mounted, externally bonded reinforcements, structural shapes and bridge

decks. Some new fiber composites, as alternatives to the traditional carbon, glass and

aramid fibers have also been well developed and introduced, such as basalt fibers, and

their advantages over the old FRP materials have been demonstrated. In general, FRP

composites are becoming a major group of construction materials for strengthening of

existing structures and for new construction to achieve high-performance and longevity

targets.

The FRPRCS-12/APFIS-2015 is a Joint Conference of the 12th International Symposium

on Fiber Reinforced Polymers for Reinforced Concrete Structures (FRPRCS-12) & the 5th

Asia-Pacific Conference on Fiber Reinforced Polymers in Structures (APFIS-2015).

FRPRCS is a prestigious and reputable international conference on the use of composite

materials (FRP) for the reinforcement and strengthening of concrete structures. The

FRPRCS conferences have been successfully held for eleven sessions in Vancouver

(Canada), Ghent (Belgium), Sapporo (Japan), Baltimore (USA), Cambridge (UK),

Singapore, Kansas City (USA), Patras (Greece), Sydney (Australia), Tampa (USA), and

Guimarães (Portugal). This is the first time that FRPRCS is held in China. APFIS is the

official IIFC conference of the Asia-Pacific Region, which aims to provide a forum for the

researchers and practitioners in the Asia-Pacific region and elsewhere in the world, for

sharing the latest developments in the research and application of FRP in civil

engineering structures. The APFIS conferences have been held successfully in Hong Kong

(China), Seoul (Korea), Hokkaido (Japan) and Melbourne (Australia).

The aim of the FRPRCS-12/APFIS-2015 is to continue the success of the previous

FRPRCS and APFIS conferences, to provide an international forum for all concerned with

the applications of FRP composites in civil engineering, and to exchange recent advances

in both research and practice. The proceedings comprise of peer reviewed papers on a

broad range of topics such as New FRP materials/systems/techniques, Durability,

Long-term performance, Bond behavior, confinement, seismic strengthening, capacity

strengthening of concrete, metallic, timber and masonry structures, performance under

extreme loading, Advanced numerical models and simulations, structures reinforced or

prestressed with FRP systems, hybrid structures, structures built entirely with FRPs,

field applications and case studies. A total of 166 papers from the authors coming from

ii

over 20 countries are finally accepted and included in the conference technical program.

The extended abstracts of these papers are included in this booklet and the attached

flash disk provides the full text of contributed papers.

We should also indicate that a special arrangements have been made with the

International Journal of Sustainable Materials and Structural Systems to publish a

selected group of the papers contributed to this conference in a Special Volume.

Authors who are willing to submit an extended version of their papers will be contacted

after this meeting and are encouraged to submit their papers for this Refereed

Publication.

In addition to the technical program and this communication, it is also our pleasure to

welcome the international FRP community to Nanjing, a city with a history over 2500

years. A city that has been the capital of China for six dynasties lasting more than 5oo

years and regarded as one of the four great ancient capitals of China. Nanjing also owns

the world’s longest City Wall, spanning over 35 km, around its downtown. With a long

cultural tradition and strong support from local educational institutions, Nanjing is

commonly viewed as a “city of culture” and one of the more pleasant cities to live in

China.

Finally, on behalf of the Organizing Committee of the FRPRCS-12/APFIS-2015, we

would like to thank all authors for their valuable contributions and for their

participation at this conference. Special thanks are to the members of the International

Scientific Committee who have thoroughly reviewed technical papers. The collaboration

with non-profitable institutions includingInternational Institute for FRP in

Construction(IIFC), American Concrete Institute(ACI), International Society for

Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure(ISHMII), China Civil

Engineering Society(CCES), CSCM(Chinese Society for Composite Materials), China

Chemical Fibers Association(CCFA) , Japan Society of Civil Engineers(JSCE),

JapanConcreteInstitute(JCI)and support provided by the private sponsors are also highly

appreciated.
