Is the old tradition of not seeing yoursoon-to-be-spouse before the wed-ding still followed

In todays weddings there are no rulesSeeing each other beforehand can calmnerves and give you some private timebefore the whirlwind of the weddingday really kicks off This can be a veryspecial moment shared just betweenthe two of you and can offer you a greatopportunity to get some of your photosout of the way allowing you to laterenjoy your cocktail party and receptionwith your guests If you want that lsquofirstlookrsquo moment I recommend staging thiswith your photographer in a beautifulsetting allowing your photographer tocapture this moment and make it veryspecial No judgment if you would rathernot have such an emotional momentexchanged in front of a private audi-ence I will admit there is somethingvery special about seeing your soon-to-be-spouse for the first time waiting foryou at the altar where you are about toexchange your vows It is definitely moreof an old-school approach but unforget-table and one that your guests will beexcited to share with you Just prepareto provide Kleenex

What is the best way to announce ourengagement

Announcing your engagement is a verypersonal thing Many couples chooseto throw a party for friends and familyduring which there is a surpriseannouncement but we also see a lotof announcements casually made onFacebook The more important ques-tions to ask yourselves are how yourannouncement will be received andwhether there is anyone you feel shouldbe told before the announcement ismade public Your circle of supporterswill be beyond enthusiastic to cele-brate and bless your wedding announce-ment so I always recommend thinkingabout how to communicate this spe-cially to your inner circle maybe duringyour weekly card game or a laidbackdinner party

Across the board those of us in thewedding world are seeing a multitudeof couples creating their own tradi-tions or creating a new spin on old tra-ditions lsquoTraditionrsquo no longer applies (inthe best possible way) however manysame-sex couples are choosing to incor-porate many classic wedding tradi-tions I believe this is because marriageequality has been a long time comingand by virtue of it being a same-sexcouple the tradition has an innate lsquofreshspinrsquo I have seen everything from thecouple having family and friends createa circle around them hand-in-handduring the ceremony to symbolize thesolidarity and support of the guests toan lsquoall guest acapella sing-alongrsquo toLady Gagarsquos ldquoBorn This Wayrdquo Find yourtraditions whether old or new andmake them your own

How does the wedding party differfor same-sex ceremonies

This is another area where we haveseen a less-traditional approach moreand more over the last five years Cou-ples often omit the bridal party alto-gether However for those who includea wedding party couples are choosingto include their closest friends andfamily members on each side regard-less of sex This isnrsquot cotillionmdashif yourbest friend is female and you wantthem to stand up for you they shouldbe by your side If all of your friends aremale then so be it forget the chicksFurthermore do not feel obligated tohave your wedding party walk downthe aisle or stand with you at the altarThere is nothing wrong with havingyour bridal party seated in the frontrow as your chief supporters and wit-nesses If you do have them walk downthe aisle though no need to order themaccording to their height I promiseyour photos will not be ruined

Wedding Designer This can be synony-mous with the role of an event producerbut could also be representative of a vendoronly handling the design and deacutecor and the production aspect of the wedding Thewedding designer hires and manages all vendors involved in the overall vision

(florals carpet staging draping props etc)Anything not within the design categorymdashlike hiring and liaising with the venue catererentertainment printer etcmdashwould fall onthe couple or wedding coordinator

In general the client should look forsomeone who is able to multi-task someonewho is organized a problem solver able tomanage and supervise an extensive teama detail-oriented individual able to com-municate information very clearly and whohas the vocabulary and understanding ofevery aspect of the event to be able to ver-bally articulate the vision It is equally nec-essary that the wedding planner is able topacify and interact with clients who areoften incredibly stressed and sometimeshighly emotional

It is not necessary for the weddingplanner to be a jack-of-all-trades but it isimperative that this person is able to atleast lsquospeak the languagersquomdashto have a gen-eral understanding of lighting and powerdraping techniques food preparations andtechniques types of wine and brands ofalcohol different fabrics standard rentalsizes and qualities of inventory etc This isimportant as you are paying them to beyour guide in all of these areas and to bringa cohesiveness to all elements

Itrsquos important that your wedding plannerlove people and be able to connect and illicittrust and comfort from others in order tobe a successful leader for the client andvendors It is equally necessary for theplanner to be a good listener and interpreterin order to deliver the clientrsquos vision
