FRONTIER NEWS A newsletter for the employees, families and friends of the "old" Frontier Airlines. Frontier's VP-Operations, Harvey Barnard, presents a $500 check to Zick Burns for designing the paint job introduced on the CV-340s which were added to the fleet beginning in June, 1959. The new logo was often called the crescent or the boomerang. It was added to the DC-3 aircraft and was also included on company stationery, promotional material, ticket counters and elsewhere. The logo itself was modified a few times until the final version appeared on the CV580 aircraft in 1964. It remained Frontier's trademark until 1978 when the red F logo was introduced. Reunion season will be over by the time you get this.I just got a report on the MCI Crews event. There havebeen some great gatherings this year, the 25th anniver-sary of FL’s death. I hope you attended some - it’s great

seeing old FLriends from the good old days. 1959 was a big year for Frontier and it is the theme for thisissue. I hope you enjoy it. Add two more FLolks to the FL Niners Club mentioned onpage 15 last time. Dispatcher Joe Claffy, GSW DEN dispatcher, was 94 on May 31st and Dick Adair, DEN pilot, is 91. I have anarticle by Dick that I hope to run in the newsletter soon. On hisretirement flight, Aug 22, 1980, his son Danny was his co-pilot. FL flight attendants Bobbie Dahl and Patty O’Neil have puttogether a great FL photo book. It’s 160 pages of mostly colorphotos on glossy paper with excellent reproduction. The book issoftbound and sized 8.5” X 11. The photos are primarily flightcrews. Contact Bonnie at 303-521-5611 to order your copy. Another good book is AIRLINE DEREGULATION ANDLAISSEZ-FAIRE MYTHOLOGY by Paul Stephen Dempseyand Andrew R. Goetz, printed 1992 by Quorum Books. Itcovers much of the turmoil in the aviation industry during theperiod FL struggled for survival and has quite a bit to say aboutour fight to survive. You can buy used copies at Amazon.comstarting at $3.00 plus S&H.

GONE WESTWe salute these FLriends on their final voyage.

They are not dead until we forget them.More information at http://FAL-1.tripod.com

Some years back I was doing some research in the archive booksection of Brigham Young University. In reading about the oldairmail pilots who flew the transcontinental mail between the years of1918 and 1927, I came across an article explaining the term “GoneWest.” As the old airmail route continued its expansion from the eastcoast to the west, thirty-two pilots and nine mechanics lost their livesin the line of duty. Three hundred wrecked aircraft were strewn fromthe Allegheny Mountains known as “The Hell Stretch,” across theopen plains to the Rockies, the Wasatch, the Sierras into the westcoast. When a pilot was over due, the term “Gone West” came intobeing. -Tex Searle, FL pilot

I have fond memories of station agentBob Pier. After completing my agenttraining in DEN in early 1953 I was as-signed to FMN. Looking for a place to live it was recommendedthat I talk to Bob who as well as being an agent managed an oldhome that had rooms to rent. It was a sad looking place but onecouldn't be very picky in 1953 FMN. I believe nine of us lived in the house and while people cameand went almost all worked for Frontier. Frankly, the place wasa three ring circus and Bob was the ringmaster who tried tomaintain order in the midst of chaos. Among those who livedthere were Charlie Southerland, Gerry Bacon and my friend androommate Fletcher Huskey, when he was a humble agent. In his soft spoken way Bob made sure we kept the placereasonably clean, oversaw our group dinner, made sure weworked in our very sad vegetable garden out back and generallyrefereed when we were close to killing each other. Bob becamea good friend, and to my recollection without exception every-one truly respected him.-Ira Kemp, [email protected] Thank you for your gracious letter and copy of the FrontierNews! I am truly amazed at the work you put in to producing thispublication. It is easy to see and understand that it is work doneout of love and respect for the "old" Frontier and the many greatpeople who worked there. I was especially sad to read of thepassing of Chuck Demoney. I got to know Chuck after Frontier, when I was working as a VP with Continental in Los Angelesand Chuck was President of MGM Grand Air. I am honored and humbled by your request for an essay on mythoughts and recollections from 1986 and the short time I waswith Frontier. If you can be patient with me, I will be pleased torespond to your request. I would like to spend some time readingsome of the other essays that have been written before I take astab at putting onto paper what I remember from the few butmostly wonderful days I spent in Denver with Frontier. I left the airline industry (or it left me with CO eliminated byjob in 1991), moved to Spokane, WA and was fortunate enoughto be a part of a couple different start up companies that werelater sold allowing me to retire here a couple of years ago. Thanks for thinking of me and including me as part of the"old" Frontier. I will put a check in the mail to you today for myyearly subscription to the Frontier News and set about writing anessay over the next few weeks.-Larry Martin, Spokane WA I had my 20 year pin made into a necklace for my wife. Icelebrate 70 this year. I'm driving a school bus part-time andloving it.-Larry Middleton, Thornton CO This is Joe Barker, a name from the past in MAF - I saw yourgreat page on Facebook and thought I would send you a coupleof items. But first, the sad news, not sure if you had heard, butLarry Nenstiel passed away on July 1st and I am attaching hisobit and the clipping from the paper. You may remember Larrywas the City Manager in LAS for many years after starting withCentral Airlines. Beccy and I went to his funeral and we saw alot of old FL folks that had not seen in quite a while and all areplanning on attending the reunion in DEN. I also ran across an old flyer announcing our service to MAFin 1983, I remember going to every travel agency in MAF andOdessa handing these damned things out, but our ski businesswas tremendous.

I will be retiring this coming Friday(7/15/11) from LAS CO. They offered methe job of running the combined CO/UA

operation but they weren’t willing to pay me what I felt was anappropriate salary for going from 20 flights a day to 55 and from100 employees to 350 so I decided to hang up the spurs. Hope to see you in DEN for the reunion.-Joe Barker, [email protected] I worked for FL in the 80s (1979-86). I would like to beincluded in the members only group. I worked in Kansas Cityres, then when we closed that office in 84, FL moved me toDEN. 1959 (Cont’d from page 1) The new logo symbolized the major achievements by Frontier in 1959. On the following pages are headlines from the companynewsletter, Sunliner Times, in 1959. Thanks to Herb Schmidt and Ivan Newell for sending me copies. Included is The Frontiersmanwhich was an insert in the newsletter. The year was started with a new owner, Bud Maytag, heir to a fortune, who became the youngest airline president in the nation whenhe bought controlling shares in the company. He brought in many new faces in upper management. New routes were awarded Frontier and new aircraft were bought. The CV340s started arriving and caused a large hiring increase increw, reservation, maintenance and station personnel. The company leased United’s CV340 flight simulator which was later boughtand subsequently converted to the world’s only CV580 flight simulator. Construction was started on a new and larger HQs building on East 39th Avenue, a mile west of Stapleton. When completed thefollowing September, it became Frontier’s headquarters until the hangar complex on Smith Road was completed in 1971.
