Colours

I chose this colour scheme because I like the neutral look that the black, grey and white create. And I think adding a splash of dusty pink will pick it up and make it stand out. I think this colour scheme is quite girly, which is the look I want for my magazine, as my main target audience is young females.

Masthead

I chose this font for my masthead because it’s plain, but doesn’t have that ‘square’ look, and therefore looks more feminine. I chose to colour it in pink because it’ll make it stand out more, especially against the other colours which are quite dull (black, white, grey). I liked the name ‘Starling’ because it’s simple and memorable, also because the word ‘star’ can be linked in with the fact that celebrities are known as ‘stars’.

Band logo

I like this font for the band logo because it’s really decorative, which makes it more interesting. Also, it’s a very feminine logo and therefore fits in with the fact that the band is made up of two girls and that the magazine targets young women. I chose to have the logo as black because most of the colour scheme will consist of grey, so the black will stand out. I liked the name ‘Betty Chicago’ for my band as it’s catchy, different and ‘Betty’ is a really feminine name, which relates to the fact that the band is meant to be quite feminine. Also, as the band are meant to have a retro/vintage style, I wanted to link the name with it. I did some research and found that Betty was one of the most popular girls names from late 1920 – mid 1930, which is the decades in which I got the most inspiration for the style.

TextI. chose just two fonts to include on my front cover, because in conjunction with the masthead and ‘Betty Chicago’ band logo, there will be different fonts, which is following the codes and conventions as most magazines use this amount of fonts on their front cover. The text that will be used for sell lines will be white and pink, which follows the colour scheme. I will use pink for puffs that I want to capture audience’s attention more (e.g. Articles for Placebo and Florence & the Machine), as pink will be the brightest colour on my front cover

I chose this font because it’s plain but still quite feminine because it’s curved.

I chose this font because I think it relates with my retro/vintage theme, as I have seen this font used a lot in articles from the 20th centaury.

Flashes

I have chosen to include flashes because by framing a text with a shape draws the reader more towards that particular part of text. The triangle flash will be used for the text that says ‘Tonnes of posters inside’. I have chosen to do this because I want the reader to recognise the offer in my magazine, and will tempt them further in to buying it. The star flash will be used to frame a buzz word, which is a technique commonly used in magazine to attract the readers attention, and therefore follows codes and conventions.

Buzz word

PLUS

By including a buzz word on my front cover I am following codes and conventions. The buzz word will be used to direct the audience to a sell line, which will be tempting them further into buying a magazine.

Main cover imageI chose this photo for the main cover image because ‘Betty Chicago’ will be the band that will be the main focus of the magazine because they are new and are trying to promote themselves. I chose this particular image because both girls look relaxed, happy and glamorous, which is the feeling I want for my magazine. It also shows of their style quite well. Also, they are both looking straight forward, which gives the audience the impression that they are directly addressing them.

Other images

This is a photo I took of one of the photos from the ‘Lungs’ album booklet. I chose this photo because it’s eye catching because of the high contrast lighting and vibrant colours. Also, it implies that the magazine will feature information on a live Florence and the Machine gig, and will therefore attract the audience to buy it.

This is a photo I took of a photo in the collectors edition of the ‘Battle for the Sun’ album. I liked this photo for my magazine because the high contrast in colour and lighting will draw the audience in. Also the fact that Brian Molko is looking straight forward gives the audience the feeling that he is directly addressing them.

M0de of Address

The mode of address is going to be informal, as I am targeting a young audience, therefore using this mode of address will make them feel at ease and will let them know that the language will be easy to understand and relate to, as formal language can put young people off on buying a magazine. I will also make sure that the language will directly address the audience, which gives the audience the impression that the magazine is personally reaching out to them, so I will use words such as ‘you’.
