front cover construction

From the first draft I changed the colours of the masthead and coverlines. I did this because I thought the mastheads colour scheme and font looked unprofessional and childish – the first draft would not have attracted my target audience. Also, the image was black and white before hand – I changed this filter as it was too dark for the coverlines. The filter was to strong of a colour and so I feel an unfiltered image would appeal better to the audience. Here, I have made some further changes to the colour scheme – the use of the colour yellow was an experimental decision; I am pleased with the outcome and overall look of the yellow colour addition however I will experiment further as I continue to design my front cover.

On this I have included the colour scheme; white, yellow, red and black. This many colours looks quite messy on a front cover and so I want to experiment whether red, white, yellow or black is better to use. I am looking at factors such as; readability of the colour and how aestistically pleasing the colour is.

I have also moved the twitter and facebook icons to the bottom of the cover – this is where the barcode will go.

Here, I have changed the masthead font – I used a music symbol as I feel the front cover did not represent a music magazine fully. In using a music symbol for the masthead this will directly inform the reader that this magazine is a music magazine. Furthermore, I have moved the twitter and facebook icons once more as I feel they look more appealing above the masthead.

From this screen grab you can see I have removed the yellow colour from the colour scheme – I did this because I feel the yellow was to light to see compared to the contrast of dark and light backgrounds.

I have also added the barcode in the bottom corner; I chose this position for the barcode as it is the normal conventional position for a barcode on a magazine.

Over the past few screen grabs Ii have changed some coverline text as I feel some wording did not look attractive or interesting for a front cover coverline.

Here, I have made drastic changes to the coverlines on the front cover – I looked at many magazines on the shelf at my local shop and noticed that many coverlines have and textbox background. I liked the look of these and so re-created it for my front cover. I am very pleased with this outcome – the text is easier to read and stands out more.

I decided to add more of these textbox backgrounds – I found it easy to complete this task on photoshop.

This image shows the difference of the use of the textbox background – the colour scheme is now red, back and white and so the front cover looks more tied together.
