And you can guess that my mother fixed us a dinner that was different from what other kids had, too. My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. You would have thought we were convicts in prison. She had to know who our friends were, and what we were doing with them. She insisted that if we said we would be gone for an hour, we would be gone for an hour or less. We were ashamed to admit it, but she had the nerve to break the Child Labor Laws by making us do some work around the house. We had to wash dishes, make the beds, learn to cook, vacuum the carpets, do laundry, and all sorts of other cruel jobs. I think she would lie awake at night thinking of more things for us to do. She always insisted on us telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. And heaven help us if she ever caught us not telling the truth. By the time we were teenagers, she could read our minds. That's when life got really tough! Mother would not let our friends just honk the horn when they drove up. They had to come up to the door so she could meet them. And while everyone else could "date" when they were 12 or 13, we had to wait till we were at least 16. Because of our mother we missed out on lots of things other kids experienced. Neither of us have ever been caught shoplifting, vandalizing other's property, or ever arrested for any crime. It was all her fault!! We never got drunk, took up smoking, stayed out all night, or a million other things other kids did. Sundays were reserved for church, and we never missed once. We knew better than to ask to sleep in on that day. Now that we have left home, we are all God-fearing, faithful Christians, educated, honest adults. we are all doing our best to be mean parents just like mom was. Mother never tried to be our best friend growing up, she tried hard to be our mother. I just cant help but think that is what's wrong with the world today. It just doesn't have enough mean moms anymore. -Selected- Happy Mothers Day!! Todd

“From Where I Sit”

We enjoyed having David Shannon and the Freed-Hardeman folks with us on Sunday. I thought the lesson was

powerful that David gave on reaching across generational boundaries and including our teens in our lives; to ask and to teach faithfulness in one another. This coming Sunday we will celebrate Mother's Day and again cherish what God gave us in scripture as Godly mothers. I found the following that someone wrote about their mean mom: We had the meanest mother in the whole world growing up!! While other kids ate candy for breakfast, we had to have cereal, eggs, and toast. When others had a Coke and a Twinkie for lunch, we had to eat sandwiches. She always insisted on us telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the

truth. Community College with a

degree in Radiologic Technology. ...McKenzie Baltz graduated from Lipscomb

University with a BBA Degree in Corporate Management and Corporate Marketing.

...Tabitha Cude will be graduating from Amridge University with a PhD in Professional

Counseling on May 24, 2019. PLEASE INFORM THE OFFICE OF OTHERS

WE WERE ABLE TO ENJOY a great Lord’s Day this past Sunday with David Shannon and his staff from Freed-Hardeman here with us. President Shannon delivered a very powerful and relevant lesson and the folks from the offices of Church Relations and Admissions did an excellent job on presenting their information about FHU. As you all know, Freed-Hardeman is a place that I hold near and dear to my heart, and it has been a blessing to be a part of the Freed-Hardeman family, and even greater, the family of Christ. I HOPE THAT YOUR CHILDREN are excited about our Summer Scholars program that began this past Sunday. Worksheets were passed out containing 50 Bible facts about our VBS story this year. Each student is asked to complete the worksheet using their Bible, memorize the answers, and then find Todd, Matthew, Shane, or me and be able to recite the answers orally. Students that are able to do so will receive a special edition “Summer Scholars” VBS t-shirt, a Summer Scholars award, and have their names printed in the weekly edition of The Messenger. You can pick up your copy of the facts on the table in the lobby or on the church website. OUR SUMMER INTERN, Sam Umstead will

begin his work with us in just a few short weeks. Sam will begin his work with us on Sunday, May 26th. Sam is a great young man with a passion for the Lord, and it is my sincere hope that we can all do

everything that we can to encourage this young man, much like Paul did with Timothy in 1 & 2 Timothy. One of the ways that I hope we can encourage Sam is by lining up various families with students in our youth group to take time to “host” Sam each Sunday afternoon during his Internship. Internships can be difficult for college students, as most of the time it is their first experience away from their families and in the “real world.” My hope is that the families within our congregation can help Sam feel at home in Centerville by signing up for a Sunday afternoon when you can take him out to eat, take him fishing, go see a movie, invite him over to spend time with your family, etc. If you would be interested in hosting Sam on a Sunday afternoon during the summer, please see me to sign up.
