Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo: the number 1 in the world for quality and capacity productionThe “tale” of Rauscedo began in 1933 when in this small village
of the province of Pordenone, in the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia,
some families formed a cooperative that would become the greatest
grape-growing concern in the world. This tale is still going on thanks
to the job of are 250 cooperative members and they have another
very important task: to guarantee the availability of a perfect product
under the morphologic, genetic and sanitary point of view in more
than 30 wine-producing countries served by this company, a perfect
product under the morphological, genetic and sanitary profile.
Thanks to a potential of 1.200 hectares of nursery and 1.400 hectares
of rootstocks, VCR is capable to produce over 80 million of grafted
vines subdivided into more than 4,000 combinations. The extent
of nursery grounds, the very good climate, the members’ high know-
how, allow to obtain the average yield of first choice grafted vines
amounts to 75%, with peaks exceeding 90%. These targets are
unthinkable elsewhere. In almost 90 years of activity, Vivai Cooperativi
Rauscedo have become far and away the most important grapevine
nursery of the world.
In addition, in order to better protect growers in relation to the clonal
selection processes and pre multiplication, VCR since 2002 has
implemented the “Quality System UNI EN ISO 9001”. This certification
is complementary to that genetic and medical assistance provided
by the Italian legislation on vine nursery.
The consistency of their production capacity can be summarized
as follows:

LE VARIETÀ RESISTENTI ALLE MALATTIETHE DISEASE-RESISTANT VARIETIES
The resistant varieties at powdery mildew and downy mildew: better environmental sustainability and economic convenience
The issues of environmental sustainability and the protection of the health
of operators, consumers and citizens in general, are becoming a priority,
especially for those crops, such as vines, they require a large number of treatments
to achieve a quality production. European regulations are becoming more stringent
in terms of use of plant protection safeguards, so that the goal is to halve the use
within 2025. For these reasons the interest in these varieties of new generation has
grown in exponential terms in all wine-producing countries and Vivai Cooperativi
Rauscedo in 2006 helped, as financial partners, establishing an Institute
of Applied Genomics in Udine and gave the course close cooperation with the
University of Udine for the evaluation of resistant varieties and the creation of new
crossings to wine and table grapes. Under both, the Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo
are, the exclusive licensee of the new varieties with the commitment to spread
it in all wine-producing countries and above all in Italy.
Currently they have been enrolled in the Italian National Register of vine varieties
and protected by patents 10 new varieties: Fleurtai, Soreli, Sauvignon Kretos,
Sauvignon Nepis, Sauvignon Rytos, Cabernet Eidos, Cabernet Volos, Merlot Khorus,
Merlot Kanthus and Julius.
These new varieties have resistance to downy mildew, powdery mildew and
in some cases even at low temperatures up to -24° C, thanks to the introgression
of resistance genes present in the parental “non Vinifera” (Bianca and
20/3). The UNIUD IGA varieties have a preponderant share of the genome
of Vitis vinifera and a share of the whole minority, no more than 5 to 10%,
belonging to other Vitis carriers of resistance genes therefore the characteristics
of the grape variety, agronomic and oenological are such that, in effect,
you can consider the varieties of Vitis vinifera, but, above all, need only
2 or 3 treatments against powdery mildew and downy mildew.

The new “M” rootstocks: a new opportunity for the growers
VCR scion and rootstocks mother plants: a guarantee of quality and health
A major front of which is handling the Research is the establishment of new rootstocks
to meet the needs and emergencies of modern viticulture. Today, the different
needs expressed by new viticultural models, certain consequences of climate
change on the physiology of the plant and the expansion of salinity phenomena
of soils, show, in many cases, a substantial inadequacy of traditional rootstocks.
With this in mind, the University of Milan has given the course, since the eighties,
at a crossing program to get new rootstocks with enhanced efficiency in the use
of mineral elements, with particular reference to iron, potassium and magnesium.
The result of this intense crossing and evaluation of the production performance
and resistance to new intersections stress culminated in the identification of four
new rootstocks: M1, M2, M3 and M4 and their registration in the National Register
of Vine Varieties (G.U. N° 127 4/0/14).
The rootstocks of the “M” series are already available to the growers, also for
the initiative of a qualified and representative group of Italian wine-growing
companies that formed the Winegraft S.r.l., with the aim of supporting research and
development activities in the field of agriculture in general and in particular in the
field of viticulture and promote the commercial development of products Research.
The Multiplication and Marketing of rootstocks M was entrusted by Winegraft Srl
exclusive worldwide to VCR.
Every year Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo plant about 110.000.000 graftings; to make
this huge production possible they gather the raw material, such as rootstock
cuttings and scions, from mother blocks made up of officially inspected base
materials. The rootstock mother blocks are located on over 1.350 hectares
in the province of Pordenone, in soils rich in skeleton, particularly suited to this
kind of cultivation and other 30 hectares have been created in Greece in order
to increase the availability of rootstocks of 110R and 1103P type. Regarding scions,
along with the plantations run by the members of the Cooperative, others are
managed through cultivation agreements by farming companies located in the
most renowned grape-growing areas. Since 1995, Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo
have established special scion mother blocks with a surface of 94 hectares
in Grado, on the Adriatic coast, and 30 hectares in the Romagna region
at Cooperativa Valbruna, where the best clonal selections of both VCR and
other Italian and foreign public constitutors have been located. In these virgin
lands, under the protection of the most strict health protection criteria, the best
clones are cultivated to enhance the production of healthy and well-lignified
scions. In 2014 it has been realized a new Scion Center south of France in Nimes
with the initial area of 20 hectares for the multiplication of French clones with
an high genetic-health profile.

The VCR clones: in the experimentation the real innovative force
Aware that innovation is the real engine of growth and commercial expansion
in any wine-growing country, VCR, since its establishment, has always been
sensitive and open to cooperation with universities and research institutions for
the testing of new varieties, crossings, selections and for the implementation
of innovative manufacturing techniques. In 1965 it initiated the creation
of an Experimental Centre with the aim to initiate clonal selection programs
under varieties most cultivated in Italy. In 1969 they have been approved the first
51 clones of the series “Rauscedo” and then, by the 90 years, we proceeded
to the registration of a new series “VCR” of the highest genetic-health status
regarding wine and table varieties grown in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Former-
Yugoslavia, Czech Republic, Greece and Georgia. To date, over 400 clones
“VCR” are enrolled in the National Register and well represent 30% of the total.
All the great currents of nursery-viticultural research were traveled
by Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo: the use of micropropagation and green graft,
health checks by Elisa tests and PCR, cloning by weak selection pressure
and oenological characterization clones through the purposes of precise
parameters. The innovation and the scientific experimentation are thus the
real engine of growth VCR, because they allow to growers of all wine-growing
areas of the world to improve the quality of their products, through the use
of grafted vines and quality clones. A decisive contribution to the qualitative
improvement is offered by Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo also through experimental
microvinifications of clonal selections performed annually in the experimental
winery of VCR; they allow a constant check of the oenological potential
of different clones, Italians and foreigners, subject to multiplication and their
tasting is an opportunity for a dialogue between winemakers and growers and
mutual suggestions, in the interest of the entire wine sector.
Research efforts and innovation are now moving towards the formation of new
varieties and new rootstocks to cope with climate change, to meet the needs
of growers around the world in terms of environmental sustainability and the
protection of workers’ health, consumers and, more generally, of all citizens.

The commercial presence of Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo now regards all the
vine-growing countries of the world: thanks to the creation of a company
in France, near Nimes, called “VCR France”, the VCR vines now are sold in the
most prestigious French wine regions: Gard, Champagne, Bordeaux; the France
market, with more than 7 million of grafted vines sold, is become for the Vivai
Cooperativi Rauscedo the most important market after the Spain.
In the US, the VCR grafted vines, cannot be exported directly because
of existing phytosanitary barriers. The interest shown towards the original
VCR clones from the most prestigious and important local winegrowers,
as Mondavi, Gallo, Martini, Sebastiani, etc., has led the Vivai Cooperativi
Rauscedo to open a new company in Santa Rosa, Sonoma Valley, California,
in order to produce and spread locally quality graf ted vines of VCR.
Established in 1996, Nova Vine has a capacity of producing and selling more
than 6 million grafted vines formed with original clones of “VCR” that have
passed the stringent health checks required by quarantine regulations
and certification “USA”. While the goal in California of Vivai Cooperativi
Rauscedo is to produce grafted vines style “VCR”, in Australia in 1998
an agreement was finalized with “Chalmers Nurseries” in order to spread
the VCR clones. Also in this case the VCR selections have successfully
passed health checks required to enter the Australian market.
VCR clones are now used, either directly or indirectly, by grape growers
in every continent.
