EclecticSoulful Inspired
1980s, New York City. It was an impassioned, indulgent,
expressive time. A time of explosive artistic expansion,
invigorated living, and an art and music scene that
reflected the changing international landscapes. The
galleries, nightclubs, and streets of downtown New York
were the epicenter of all that was happening and cool. It’s
no coincidence then that Lenny Kravitz’s first Manhattan
apartment was downtown, in SoHo, on Broome Street.
For nearly two decades, Lenny Kravitz has been
globally recognized as an award-winning musician, a
bona-fide style icon, and a creative visionary across all
platforms. Kravitz approaches his passion for music—
and life in general—as an intrinsic whole fueled by his
interests in travel, design, and fashion. His drive to
combine all aspects of his artistic endeavors is what
inspired him to found Kravitz Design Inc. in 2003.
POLISHED ELEGANCE WITH AN EDGE
Kravitz Design’s aesthetic is a reflection of its founder Lenny Kravitz’s eclectic lifestyle and world travels.
50 51
Over the last decade, Lenny Kravitz and his team at Kravitz
Design have acted as the creative tour de force behind Miami’s
Paramount Bay Condos, L’Arc nightclub in Paris, and the
penthouse recording studio at Setai Hotel. They have executed
high-profile collaborations with Swarovski and Philippe Starck
for Kartell. The boutique NYC agency has amassed quite the
reputation for moody, cosmopolitan elegance with a fearlessly
sharpened edge. 75 Kenmare is no exception.
NoLita-based Kravitz Design turns the canvas of space into a visceral playground of colors, contrasts, textures, and reflections.

THE 75 KENMARE VIBE
For 75 Kenmare, Kravitz Design kept downtown authenticity alive and incorporated a sense of refined elegance.
53
Creating the interiors of 75 Kenmare
was an obvious and organic
intersection of Kravitz Design’s
core culture and values. As a team,
Kravitz Design lives and breathes
the downtown mindset and was—and
still is—an active part of its cultural
history. Kravitz Design possesses an
earned, intimate connection with the
NoLita neighborhood—the scale of its
buildings, the gritty corner bodegas,
and its tight-knit international vibe.

YOU FEEL LIKE YOURSELF AND WHERE
YOUR SPIRIT IS COMFORTABLE.”

Lenny Kravitz is shaking up the worlds of art, music, and design.

Q What is your personal experience with downtown New York City?
A Downtown New York City for me was the place. When I came back to New York City after high school and I began to work on my music, I moved to SoHo and then the Lower East Side. I hung out in NoLita and these were the places I felt most comfortable. This is where the artists were. There was an energy there that was very pleasing to me. There were still a lot of mom and pop shops at that time. You knew everybody. You knew the lady running the shop here, the shop there, the guy at this store and it felt very cozy.
Q What is the draw of the NoLita neighborhood?
A A good balance between the old school and the new school. It ’s always a great place to walk around. Besides having the new people that have moved there, you still have a lot of folks whose families have been there for generations, so it ’s a really great mix of people and energy. People downtown always had the cutting-edge fashion and still do.
Q How are music and design similar?
A Music and design are very similar. They’re both sculptural and layered and come from nothing. You start with a base, and then you build on top of it. In the end, you have a mood. A vibe. Something that makes you feel differently than you did before.
Q How did you get interested in design?
A I think my fascination for design really developed without me being aware of it. As a kid, I was aware of my room, the space, the objects, the lighting—when the lighting was the way I liked it, when it wasn’t—and I was aware of the way the space felt. When I got my own place after I had my record deal, I wanted to make a statement but I didn’t have the bread to do it, so I began to make furniture.
Q How do you describe the aesthetic of 75 Kenmare?
A Traveling to France and to Spain after I made my first record turned me on to Art Nouveau. I was very much into the furniture of Majorelle and into the architecture of Gaudi.
Q How does being surrounded by great design affect someone’s life?
A Being around great design does a lot for the senses. When I’m in an environment that is satisfying to me, it makes me more creative and relaxed. It affects the way I socialize and how I feel. It changes everything.
Q What is your philosophy of Kravitz Design?
A Kravitz Design is that we are not one thing. It ’s all about adapting to the project and being able to be flexible. Creatively, I always want to be changing, to be growing. You can look at many different projects that we’ve done and you wouldn’t think that the same company did it. It ’s important to me to keep evolving.
Q What does the notion of home mean to you?
A Home should be a place where you feel like yourself, where you feel natural, where your spirit is comfortable. A place where you want to make memories and a life. Home should be your refuge.

THE ART OF ARCHITECTURE
ANDRE KIKOSKI , AIA
Architect
65
“A building in its smallest detail and its biggest expression can articulate the limitless potential of design.”
- Andre Kikoski, AIA
THE ART OF ARCHITECTURE
Manhattan-based Andre Kikoski, AIA, a rising star in architecture, has earned numerous
accolades for his innovative designs, including
the American Institute of Architects Honor
Award, the James Beard Foundation Award for
Outstanding Design, and awards for his work at
The Wright in the Guggenheim Museum. Each
of Kikoski’s signature buildings, art spaces, and
private residences is an aesthetically designed
wonder that seamlessly blurs the boundaries
between art and architecture.
A BUILDING AS A CANVAS
66
“As a child, I traveled the world visiting cities, landmarks, and museums full of art. It left me with
an incredible appreciation for buildings and the experiences they create.”
- Andre Kikoski, AIA
67
68 69
“We designed a contemporary building that emphasizes shade and shadow with its highly articulated façade. A building that will change
with the time of the day, change with the season. A building that even has a sense of joy.”
- Andre Kikoski, AIA
When conceiving the exterior of 75 Kenmare, Kikoski
and his firm sought to set the tone for future buildings
in the neighborhood. They aimed to make a striking,
contemporary statement to complement NoLita and its
architectural landmarks. To look forward, it was necessary
to look back. By studying ways in which hand-laid brick
had been used to create detail and expression in historic
structures nearby, they were able to reinterpret those
bricks in cast formed concrete. This led to a richly textured
and finely scaled surface that brings pattern, texture, and
rhythm to the exterior.
THE ART OF ARCHITECTURE
ARCHITECTURAL FABRIC
70
In order to begin conceptualizing his artistic vision
for 75 Kenmare, Kikoski studied iconic buildings
throughout the city of New York. Historical
buildings. Modern buildings. Buildings he had never
really noticed before. Kikoski then scrutinized the
finest examples of architecture in NoLita, taking
note of the smallest details and textures and
rethinking them in a purely contemporary way.
CEMENTEDIN THE ROOTSOF THE CITY
THE ART OF ARCHITECTURE
Kikoski designed a masterpiece of a building that’s absolutely unique and cosmopolitan in its aesthetic.
71
A building that’s globally inspired yet born of the
fabric of New York City and enriched with an intimate
relationship to the street. A building that’s a contextual
celebration of classic materials and masonry techniques
in an entirely new way. A building that is, in a word—art.
Architect’s sketch Vertical panels cast a series of narrow channels in three unique widths to define the architecture of the street wall. Each unique width is in a specific vertical plane that is set consistently with respect to the other two, and the pattern of channels is staggered randomly to create a stunning, contemporary play of dimension, shade, and shadow.
Façade materials Kikoski reinterprets bricks in cast formed concrete, imagining a richly textured and finely scaled surface with thoughtfully contemplated aggregate, color, and a surface patina.
Bronze-hued framingand fins gild the edges for a glorious, warm glow.
