From the Vicar’s Desk
Dearly beloved in Christ, We believe that Church's foundation and beliefs are firmly rooted in the living traditions of the Apostles of Jesus. In Nicean creed we affirm that the church is “apostolic”. The word apostle means “one who is sent out.” In the New Testament, there are two primary usages of the word apostle. The first is in specifically referring to the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ and the second is referring to the individuals who are sent out to be ambassadors of Jesus Christ. It is widely believed that Thomas the apostle was send to India as the messenger of our Lord and he established church after reaching Kerala in AD 52. Mar Thoma Christians of Malabar always uphold this tradition that he preached the gospel first to the Jewish settlers in and around Cochin, and then he brought many high caste Hindus to the Christian faith from four leading families of that time. He established seven Christian communities in Cranganore, Chavakad, Parur, Gokamangalam, Niranam, Nilakkal and Quilon and ordained presbyters to continue the kingdom ministry. Some of the New Testament passages clearly show his love, devotion and purity of heart towards his Master. When Jesus announced His intention of going to the Jerusalem and His life was in danger there, brushing aside the protests of His disciples Thomas said to the others: "Let us also go, that we may die with him." (John 11:7,8,16). His appealing words on the occasion in which Christ came into sight to him after refusing to believe that Christ appeared to the disciples in the closed room on the evening of Easter Day, "My Lord and My God" (John 20:19-29) also shows his trust and commitment to his Lord. Another tradition based on the Apocryphal Acts of Thomas, the Apostle developed a reputation as a great builder and he was given a huge amount of money to build a magnificent palace for King Gondophares, the Indo-Parthian King. Thomas spend the money to support the poor. Upon his return, the King asked to see the progress on the palace but he failed to reply. Thomas was sent to prison instructing him to burn alive. On the same day the King's brother saw a dream and went to his brother to tell that he saw a palace was built in heaven for Gondophares. Later the king was baptized by the apostle along with many of his people. Thomas was martyred by shedding his blood for his Master, speared to death at a place called Calamine. Christians throughout the world celebrate July 3rd as St.Thomas Day. Let us take a closer look at some of the qualities that characterized this great man and see how we can benefit from his faithful life. This year’s home land fellowship is arranged at MCRD Thelliyoor on 13th July. I request all our former and present members who are in Kerala during that time to attend the meeting to celebrate the joy of the fellowship in Christ. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us all. Shibu Achen Mob: 65848421
