Speak.. . .Speak.. . .

Baronial Anniversary has just passed andwe could not have asked for a more enjoy-able event. We were very pleased to see somany gentles competing for the honour to

be our Barony's Champions, and delighted to see somany new faces, not least the large group whovisited fromSt Kessog.

And so to Festival. Over a dozen SouthronGaarders will be attending this year, and well overtwo dozen from these Isles in total. The occasion forthe marked increase in attendance is the war de-clared between Ynys Fawr and the three CrescentIsles groups, but it is also a natural consequence ofthe widening and deepening ties between thedifferent parts of the Kingdom.

This was also evidenced by the record number ofvisitors from Continental Lochac at CanterburyFaire. All spoke highly of our encampment, andthus we are likely to see further growth in distanttravellers attending. We will be continuing tocount on your good offices to make people new toour barony -- whether temporary visitors or anewcomer taking those first steps into our world --as welcome as possible.

Winter approaches and, with it, St Kessog's FirstFeast in May, then our Quarter Day Yule Celebra-tion in the Levant, followed soon afterwards by JulyCoronation in Ildhafn's Canton of Cluain. If youhave not yet experienced the grandeur of a Crownevent, the latter will be an excellent opportunity. We hope the Barony will host a Crown event in thenot-too-distant future and in good time will becalling for aid, assistance and advice as to that.

Hello, and welcome to my first column for FTT. Forthose members of the populace who haven't alreadyheard, my name is Peregrine Flamstead and I amthe new Seneschal of Southron Gaard. I thought Iwould begin this first column with a brief introduc-tion about myself and how I got involved in theSCA.

In 1999, while still in high school, I joined a steelweapons re-enactment group in Auckland, wherelittle else was done besides fighting. In 2001 I movedto Christchurch to attend university and was intro-duced to the SCA for the first time. Along with thiscame an introduction to all the other things the SCAhas to offer; all the various arts and sciences andnon-combat activities.

At the start of my second year of university I met afew other people interested in steel fighting, and soOrdo Cygni was born as a weekly steel-weaponsfighter's practice. Later on, Ordo Cygni grew toencompass arts & sciences and various other medievalpursuits besides fighting. I served as the president ofOrdo Cygni for two years before graduating in 2004with a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical andElec-tronic Engineering. In the SCA I have served as theBaronial Herald for the past two years.

One of the characteristics that differentiates the SCAfrom other medieval groups is the range of activitiesit has to offer, from fighting and archery to embroi-dery and weaving and everything in between. Iwould encourage people to broaden their horizonsand go and try something new. It has beencommented that many people specialise in just oneinterest; an art or science or something martial, oftento the detriment of other skills and interests.

So go and pick up a bow and learn to shoot, or getsomeone to teach you embroidery, or start makingthat pair of shoes you have always been too scared tostart making before. Remember nothing is as intimi-dating as it looks, and are often more fun and re-warding than you expect.

Yours in Service,Peregrine Flamstead

DEVIOUS DEVICES

A hastily-scrawled note found on the body of a courier of unknown origin who hadapparently been waylaid by bandits:

Your Excellency Arnfinr,

As per your request, I have assayed the forces of the enemy and those of the variousBaronies, shires, cantons, households et al, within the Kingdom, and have gravenews.

It would appear that Your Excellency shall have every opportunity to have at theenemy, for their infiltration of mainland Lochac has been all but complete. We havefound that, of the many able-bodied combatants in the Kingdom, only some fewhave maintained their freedom from the usurpment of Gotmarkians, or theirfamiliars.

Your agents have also revealed that the final death throes of the coffers of SouthronGaard are nigh, and that currency within the Barony has been so salted as to beworthless. Also sighted in the scribes quarters of Southron Gaard, amongst the harpyfilth, was a document entitled "Magna Carta".

Your Excellencies, poisoners have been positioned to have the greatest impact uponthe enemy at wells and granaries, and the sappers have prepared all relevantfortifications, should Your Excellency give the command to strike.

BELLIGERENCE - A missive received from Their Excellencies of Ynys Fawr

Noble Cousins,

We demand that you cease and desist in your machinations upon Ynys Fawr, and the Innocents of Main-land Lochac, remove your claim to the wastes of Terra Antarctica, and dispatch your Cartographer fromthis life, poste-haste.

Should you fail in this simple task, we shall reveal the depths of your Baronial mismanagement to TheirMajesties, move Our Navy to bring all your lands under Embargo, and strike down all who wouldstcross Our path.

Shouldst this not dissuade you from further unwholesome excursions, we will annexe your lands withinOur lands and provide you to Their Majesties to be judged.

We Remain,Arnfinr and AineBaron and Baroness of Ynys Fawr

SCANZ Representative Needed

The SCANZ committee needs a secondrepresenta-tive from Southron Gaard to replace AlasdairMuckart, whose term has ended late last year.

Terms are for three years, and the job requiresregular email access and a good working knowl-ege of the SCA. The ability to travel inter-islandonce a year for the AGM is important, but notabsolutely essential. A good understanding of howthe SCA operates and a head for organisation arealso important. This is a position in the mundaneorganis tion and has no bearing on, or requirementfor "in-game" rank.

Interested parties can contact the committee withexpressions of interest or questions on [email protected]. Information on the SCANZ canbe found at

www.sca.org.nz.

The applicant will ultimately be selected by a voteof the Southron Gaard membership.

Upcoming Reeve Position

Applications for the position of BaronialReeve are now open and will close June1st. Anyone interested in the positionsshould write a brief application, includingtheir full contact details and experiencerelevant to the position, and send it to the Kingdom Exchequer,[email protected]

with copies to the Baronial [email protected],

the Baronial [email protected]

and the Baron and Baroness.b&[email protected]

The successful applicant will be chosen bythe Kingdom Exchequer, and announcedshortly after June 1st.

QUARTERMASTER:Received Back Baronial Belongings from CF. ARCHERY CAPTAIN1. We've had archery practice twice in the last month with an attendance of 4-6 archers at each practice.

2. Attended the Baronial Muster on February 26. I brought along some archery equipment, and spoke with inter-ested gentles regards archery and the SCA in general.

3. Attended the inaugural event of the proto-College of St Kessog in Dunedin on March 5. Spoke to people downthere regards Archery activities in the society. It sounds as if the College will be well equipped to run their ownarchery practices down in Dunedin: they have a gentle who is knowledgable about archery to run things (a former NZjunior champion, apparently), and a potential source of gear - Otago University had an archery club that is now de-funct, leaving behind a significant supply of bows, arrows, etc, which St Kessog is hoping to be able to access for itsown use...

4. In the process of constructing new target butts for the Barony's use (one down, at least two to go). Currently tak-ing donation of materials for construction, and doing an excellent job of sticking to budget (which is precisely $0.00).

5. We've scheduled an IKAC shoot for next practice (Sunday 19/3). Would like to see this become a monthly oc-curence, but will wait for feedback from the populace before acting on this.

Future Plans: Still need to set up targets for the Baronial Archery champion shoot at the Baronial Anniversary eventthis month.

B&B:* Received much excellent feedback about CF, congrats to all concerned

* Attended St Kessog inaugural event, 25 people there, good set of officers appointed, expecting several at BA

* Discussions with various re: Festival logistics and alliances

* Ordered/paid for platters, now arrived

* Attended February muster, good turnout, especially new faces/ungarbed folk come for a look, boffer very popular

* Started Lochac boffer discussion group including current Heavy Deputy Marshal (his idea)

* Preparation for BA going well, getting letters of intent and also recommendations, need more of course

• Seamsters, singing

DEMO REQUESTS: A wedding in August, mentioned the fee, haven’t heard back

EVENT REPORTS:

CF:- No report as yetx

Page 11: From the Tower - Society for Creative Anachronism · SCA. In 1999, while still in high school, I joined a steel weapons re-enactment group in Auckland, where little else was done

FEBRUARY MUSTER:-We had a muster, it was fun. There was a tourney and a boffer tourney. They weregood. In future, checking that the venue has toilets is recommended.

BA:- Planning is going well with disappointing bookings at this stage. Tourney and Boffers are under control. Danielhas offered to run a treasure hunt for children.

YULE:- 1st July, 1 week before coronation. Theme: Yule on the Levant. $16 adults, $8 children. Gavin’s bid Ac-cepted.

BAL D’ ARGENT:- We got the Bid! Thinking of changing dates to September 16/17. With the tourney do wewant to make this our quarterly event? There was discussion re the use of the Laurel Fund for teachers, even forrelated classes such as music. WEA has four rooms so there can be class streams.

Meredith is scavenging for St Kessogs- garb, fabric, feast gear etc. Would like to hand it over at BA.

GENERAL BUSINESSThe Platters have arrived. They are very nice.

Serving utensils for High table are being hunted

Page Stuff is becoming more of an issue- stuff taking place at events almost needs a co-coordinator.

A CF Ticky box and hints for young players sheet would be nice. No one wants to do it.

Baronial Tokens and Awards- Should there be a physical representation for them? Is it appropriate? It was in-tended to make badges at the start. Pins would be better.ACTION: Bastian to be asked to cast samples, discuss the cost of this with him, also that of enameling. All in favour.

Feast kits for travelers- including an identifying list with each kit? Labelled objects? The inestment would be mainlytime. Lost property could be loaned to new comersACTION:- Cat to make up a couple of sample bags as an experiment

Meeting closed: 8.25 pm.
