The boys in the Under 16 Athletics age group placed first and were awarded with a winner's flag, which has gone straight to the trophy cabinet - placed next to the 2017 SA High Schools Korfball Championship trophy of which SHC also collected in Term 3. Our Year 10 Soccer and girls’ and boys’ Basketball Knockout teams have come to the end of their knockout journey. The soccer team progressed through Round 1 and Round 2, featuring at the finals day and placing fourth in the state overall. In Round 1, the Year 10 boys’ Basketball Knockout team defeated Unley High School before working tremendously hard to contain Nazareth College, but were outskilled after Round 1. Similarly, the girls’ Year 10 Basketball Knockout team out worked Cornerstone College to take the win, but were unable to stop Adelaide High, although they did keep them honest for three out of four quarters. Achilles Cup

On Thursday 28 September, the Sacred Heart Boys Athletics Team headed to the SA Athletics Stadium to compete in the Achilles Cup Carnival. There were numerous successes throughout the day as the boys put their athletic skills on the track for all to see. Lartrell Stuart, Kareem Aitken, Tristan Camilleri, Jake Geyer and Christian Wright hit the 100m and 200m track with impressive pace. Tristan took first place in the U16.1 100m, 200m, and Hurdles, while Christian and Kareem took first place in the 200m U16 and Open, respectively. Tyreece Conway (Under 15 Hurdles) and Brandon Smith (Under 14 400m) performed magnificently to win their events. In the jumps, Hayden Meakes, an U16 athlete, showed his diversity (usually a state basketballer) by placing first in the U21.2 High Jump (1.70m). Michael Charles placed second in the U16.2 High Jump but it was ‘jumping’ Jack Downey who impressed the most! Jack secured a win in the U16.1 High Jump (1.89cm), the U16.1 Pole Vault (4.15m), U16.1 Triple Jump (11.2m) and a win in the U16.1 Long Jump (5.92m). Xavier Robins and Connor Norbury were the two impressive Middle School students in the U15 events, taking out the high jump in div 1 and 2 on the day! The distance track saw Patrick Goodwin step up to take a comfortable win in the U21.1 1500m in 4 min 26 sec. Noah Pearce and Edward Faulkner won the U15 and U14 1500m, respectively. While in the throwing events, Isaac Varcoe (U14 div 2 Javelin) was our only winner on the day. Our only relay team to take first place was our U16 team made up of Jack Downey, Jake Geyer, Christian Wright and Tristan Camilleri. Together they executed the race superbly in a time of 47.32s. The students were sensational all day long and worked hard to produce a wonderful team effort. Our students compiled a huge score on the track, however were not as strong in the field events. An area of improvement for the coming years to allow us to move back up into the ‘A’ Division. Well done to the U16 boys who won their age group, and to all involved who contributed to achieving a third place finish overall! Our relay teams performed admirably against the other schools. The men's team placed 4th, women's team 3rd and overall, the team placed 4th. The swim team looks forward to their next meet at Immanuel College in November. Sonja Brownridge Swimming Coordinator

Boys’ Sports Awards 2017 During Terms 1 to 3, the SHC Sports Department has provided students with the opportunity to choose from 11 ‘weekly’ sports. Each team trained once a week and played once a week. Over 250 students took up the offer this year and experienced the highs and lows of playing sport for their College. Our coaches have dedicated much of their time to providing our students with a coach who is commitment, passionate and knowledgeable and their consistent presence has afforded the students a positive experience whilst playing sport at SHC. We thank all of our coaches (especially our teacher coaches) for their effort this year, it is greatly appreciated. The coaches of our sports teams were asked to nominate two - three awards depending on the size of their team. The Best and Fairest award has been selected based on the players’ demonstration of the following attributes:

• Performance in games/trainings • Commitment to team concepts • Commitment to games/trainings • Commitment to improvement.

Congratulations to all of the award recipients for their hard work and commitment! If you have not yet collected your award, please visit the Sports Office in the Br Joseph McAteer Centre to pick it up. Ali Trewartha Boys’ Sport Coordinator

Basketball – Knockout

Year 10 Knockout Basketball The Year 10 Knockout Boys Basketball team put on a brilliant performance in both of their recent games against Unley High and Nazareth College. Despite a disappointing end to the day, the boys came away with heads held high and a new sense of camaraderie. The team was made up from a mixture of boys who play for both school and club, where many of the boys had never played with each other before. Taking this into consideration, the boys put together a great performance. Led by coach, Nathan Anderson, the boys started the day well with a convincing win over Unley High. The boys’ defensive pressure rattled Unley, leading to countless buckets and a handy early lead. Proving too strong for Unley, key scorers, Riley Luke, Zac Dumesny and Lachlan Bahnisch quickly cashed in where they were backed up by key defenders, Aiden Gorringe and Liam Chapman. The boys then played Nazareth where unfortunately they were knocked out. It was a close game that was unfortunately led by Nazareth until the final siren. The boys gave it their all and we look forward to the years to come. A big thankyou to both Nathan and Ali Trewartha for making the day go ahead and giving up their generous time to help out.

Basketball - Girls

Girls’ Basketball This year we are lucky to have a great bunch of Year 10 girl basketballers, and for the first time in a while we entered a team in the Year 10 Girls Basketball Statewide Knockout competition. Played at the College in the new Br Joseph McAteer Centre, the girls took on two teams in the hope of making it through to the finals. What a great experience it was! Game one was against Adelaide High. I was so impressed with the way the girls handled themselves against the much taller and more fancied Adelaide team. Beautifully led by coach, Jordan Walker-Roberts, the team fought hard to be even during the third quarter and we all thought that they might just pull off the win of the year. However it was not to be - Adelaide turned it on in the last quarter with some awesome shooting by their Australian Representatives. A loss of 10 points is a fantastic effort and has made our coaches very excited for next year. Strong performances were played out by Chelsea Giles and Kasey Hywood. Game 2 was against Cornerstone College. After a loss to Adelaide it was always going to be hard to get up to play this game. Credit to Manager, Mary Wilkins, for the sustenance and hydration as the girls came back fired up and ready to play. SHC got the jump and led all the way to a win. Cornerstone fought back in the third quarter, but SHC were too strong. Strong performance by Gemma Horgan. Following on from the knockout and to continue the drive for next year, I am pleased to announce that we are having a Girls Open A team play Saturday mornings at Cabra. All year levels are welcome to play in this short 5 week season starting in Week 1. Michelle Crocker Basketball and Netball Coordinator

Korfball

SA High Schools Korfball Championship 2017 Recent years has seen great success from Sacred Heart College Korfball teams in entering the All Schools Championships. Again in 2017, Sacred Heart had large student interest in the Championship and we entered two teams into the competition. Our two mixed teams made up of year 10s and 11s from mostly Netball and Basketball backgrounds headed to Priceline stadium to defend their past success of recent years. Most of our students had never played the game of Korfball before but they were quick to adapt to the rules and structures required for success. The one day championships involved teams from numerous Schools throughout the State. The first round match saw SHC Navy take the win over SHC Royal in a highly athletic and skilful game. Both SHC teams continued the carnival with much success and were able to secure 1st and 3rd position at the end of the minor rounds. The SHC Royal team finished equal 1st with St Ignatius College and progressed to the grand final where they were successful in taking home the Championships with a two goal win over St Ignatius. The SHC Navy side played off in the 3rd vs 4th match and were also successful taking home third place for the day. Coaches, Jordan Walker-Roberts and myself were extremely proud of the SHC Korfballers’ efforts and attitude throughout the day. With such little experience and preparation, they really did an outstanding job taking away first and third place in the All Schools Carnival for 2017. Well done to all the students involved! Netball

Netball Season Wrap-up What a successful finish to the 2017 Netball season! Seven grand final matches resulting in five premierships! Well done to all the players involved in Netball this year at the College. In total we had 140 players and 14 teams this year with 90 Year 11 and 12s and 50 Year 10s. The future looks bright with both the Year 10A, Year 10B1 and Year 10B2 teams making their grand final. Congratulations to our Year 10 B1 team who were champions, comfortably winning their grand final match against Mercedes. We had Three Year 10 B teams play at St Michael’s all in the same grade, with SHC4 finishing third and SHC5 finishing ninth. Great results from these teams. Well done to all of our Year 10 teams. I look forward to seeing you all at the open netball trials in term 1 next year. Thank you to the Year 10 Coaches this year; Maddie A1, Romy and Olivia B1, Esther B2 (SHC3), Mae B2 (SHC4) and Molly and Maddi B2 (SHC5). The Open teams have had a very successful year finishing with four premierships. Congratulations to the A1, A2, B2 and C2 teams who won the flags in their divisions. All matches were tightly contested and there were many heart stopping moments in all the games. I have enjoyed visiting you at games and watching the joy of playing and representing the College. All teams played with vigour, respect and pride this year and were great ambassadors of the College. Thank you to TJ B1 (SHC3), Amy B1 (SHC4), Claudia B2 (SHC6), Maggie C1 (SHC7) and Kristen C1 (SHC8) for your support and coaching this year. The B2 (SHC5) team made up of Year 12 Boarders and the C2 (SHC9) team made up of Year 12 day students both had a bumpy roads in the finals - absence and the struggle of Year 12 studies had an effect on trainings and filling teams. However both teams pulled it together to finish off the season strongly and end their Netball experience at SHC with Premierships. Thank you to Kellie and Briony for getting these teams through the season. The Open A2 team had a great season despite being pushed and pulled on occasions due to A1 call ups. Credit to Brittany for steadying the ship and getting them to a winning premiership game. A fitting finish to a great resilient group of girls. The Open A1s finished their Saturday morning games with a great premiership win over Cardijn College. It was a close match with several lead changes in the final quarter. Drawing on their positive experience from this year’s Marist Championship come from behind win - the team finished strongly and secured the premiership by 3 goals. The team completed their fruitful year with a 3rd place finish in the Statewide Knockout. The team had to battle hard with many

players struggling with illness and injury. Their effort, demeanour and impeccable behaviour is to be commended. Soccer - Knockout

Year 10 Knockout Soccer On Monday Week 9 (24 September), the Year 10 boys’ knockout soccer team travelled to the Parks Recreation Sports Centre in Angle Park. Prior to this day the boys were successful in the first and second round making their way to the semi and possible grand final. Three other teams had also made it thus far. Sacred Heart's first game was against PAC. The game kicked off with a great start by SHC. Within the first 10 minutes SHC was denied a goal scoring opportunity by a handball on the goal line from PAC. Unfortunately the penalty that was followed up was saved by PAC’s goal keeper. With everyone's head down from one mistake PAC caught the team on the counter attack and scored to make it one nil. Unfortunately luck was not with SHC and PAC soon received a penalty just prior to halftime making the score 2-0. After a rev up at half time by coach, Deion the boys were fired up and ready to fight back. Suddenly from kick off with a great combination play between Marcus McInerney and Christian Tinnion, a goal came. The score was 2-1. Finally with spirit, SHC started to get some more confidence and was putting PAC under pressure. Even with another 2 opportunities from Marcus McInnerney and Christian Tinnion, PAC’s goalkeeper kept them ahead. PAC followed with another counter attack, despite some strong defensive work from Jacob Rossi, making the score 3-1. SHC dropped their heads one more time admitting defeat early leaving the gates open for PAC to score a fourth. The final whistle went leaving the score at full time 4-1. This sadly meant that SHC could not play in the grand final against Nazareth who played Trinity winning 2-1. SHC had one game left for the third or fourth place play off against Trinity College. Soon after a tiring first half and a stalemate with no more goals scored, the half time whistle went. SHC came out with a better mindset in the second half but once again, were defeated by another goal from Trinity, 2-0. With a quick turn of events and some spirit, Christian Tinnion unleashed a shot causing Trinity’s goal keeper to pull off a miracle save. Harry Ashworth followed up with a tap in bring the score to 2-1. After a quick celebration and back to kick off the SHC boys switched off again and conceded again, 3-1. By this time, late in the game the Sacred Heart boys had no confidence and hearts were broken. Jacob Rossi fought well in defence and Lewis Blazincic made some strong saves. However Trinity scored a fourth making it 4-1 and then the final whistle came. After an extremely devastating day, the boys were exhausted. They had battled hard and should be recognised for making it further than any other Year 10 team in previous years. We hope Levi has a speedy recovery with his broken arm. Sadly this was the end of our season, but we all look forward to a great season next year. A special thanks to the College, parents and coaches, Deion and Weiting for supporting us this season.
