Patterson PTA’s 2012 Reading ProgramsIt is that time of year again, Reading Program time! This year PTA is once again participating in Ozzie’s Reading Club with the Kane County Cougars and Six Flags Read to Succeed Programs . To receive the prizes from each program, students must read for 6 hours and turn in their completed reading logs for each program .

For Ozzie’s Reading Club, record your reading time on your reading log . Once you have completed 6 hours of reading, complete the order form, purchase additional tickets, and send your check payable to Patterson PTA back to school . Please turn these forms into the office no later than Thurs-day, March 22, 2012 . Turning the forms in on that day will ensure that we have plenty of time to receive the tickets from the Cougars and pass them out for the Saturday, April 21, 2012 Patterson game day .

Thank you for everyone who turned in their Six Flags Read to Succeed Logs! Tickets will be passed out in May .

From the Principal...Dear Parents,

Many great things are happening in March at Patterson Elementary! We’ll kick off the month with orientation for the 2012-2013 Kindergarten parents . Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will be taking the Annual Illinois Standards Achieve-ment Test (ISAT) . Finally, we’ll reach the end of third quarter before a well deserved Spring break .

ISAT testing will be held during the week of March 5 . Third, Fourth and Fifth grade students will be assessed in the areas of reading and mathematics . In addition, 4th grade students will be assessed in science . It is extremely important that your child is present for these assessments . To help them achieve their best, please ensure they get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast . The results of these tests are analyzed to help us plan for individuals, grade levels and school-wide improvement . Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions .

There is an orientation for all incoming Kindergarten parents on March 1 at 6:30pm in the LMC . If you have any friends of neighbors who will be new to Patterson with a kinder-gartener next year, Please do them the courtesy of letting them know it’s time to contact the school and register! Any student who will be 5 on or before Sept . 1, 2012 is eligible for Kindergarten . Speaking of registration, we have begun the process of confirming contact information and registration paperwork for the upcoming school year . Please be sure to send any paperwork received back to the school ASAP . As always, call us at (630)428-6500 with any questions . As a reminder, our quarter ends March 23 with a 12:15 dis-missal and third quarter report cards will be sent home with students after Spring Break on Thursday April 5 .

Have a great month!Principal Michele Frost

Hard-working Hands & Hairnets...We would like to thank the 60 families who partici-pated in the Feed My Starving Children event on Friday, February 10 . Together, we packed 18,144 meals to feed 50 children for an entire year! What an awesome display of loving kindness! Thank you for donating your time, energy and enthusiasm to help some of our world’s poorest children . Patterson Prairie Dogs rock!

Heads Up! Lice...The Board of Education Policy on Lice states that if I child is sent home with lice, the student will be re-admitted to class only after parents present proof of treatment (receipt for medicated shampoo, physician note, etc .) The entire classroom does not need to be checked for one incident; however, we will check any child we have a concern about due to exposure or symptoms, as a courtesy, on parent’s request . Keeping the above policy in mind, lice are a com-mon annoyance in our society . Students can be ex-posed in sports, at the movie theatre, trying on clothes in stores, at slumber parties, and any number of other places . While we can’t keep it out of our community, at Patterson, our goal is to ensure that if a child comes to school with head lice, it doesn’t spread to anyone else . We have taken preventative measures to eliminate spreading . For example, you will not see old couches with high backs in the LMC or shared “reading pillows” in the classrooms; rather you will see washable items and vinyl seats such as the beanbag chairs in the LMC that can be wiped off . Students no longer share head-phones in the computer lab . Students are discouraged from sharing any hats or headwear . Activities that involve sharing headwear including blindfolds are discouraged even at our class parties . If you fear your child is regularly exposed via sports or other activities outside of school, there are products on the market to help prevent lice infestation . For example, Tea Tree Oil, or “BOO”, which is available at most children’s hair salons . If you are concerned that your child may have head lice, check for nits (small white or silvery eggs attached to hair that don’t fall off easily) especially on the hairs in the back of the head and behind the ears . Watch for itching and scratches that become infected . Treat as soon as possible . You may contact our school nurse, Kathleen Smart, for tips on treatment . As a courtesy, please notify the school and children they have been in close contact with .
