LEAVE OF ABSENCESch. Gijo John Kochuparambil has been granted leave of absence from the Society for one year.

For a year (2008-09) the Holy Cross Jesuit Community and the sprawling hill (Mt. St. James) had been a home for me. Ever since, the hill and the community remain a sweet memory. Hence, a chance to spend two days on the hill was a welcome blessing. The proverbial Jesuit hospitality of Holy Cross and knowing almost everyone in the house made a big difference. The campus surprised me with the growth in the number of students, obviously due to the improved quality of education provided, and the state -of- the art infrastructure. The brand new contemplative Centre on a small hillock, looking down a vast reservoir, is indeed a real winner. Two factors, among many others, stand out in the growth of the Holy Cross- the energy drawn from the Jesuit Heritage, and the culture of giving of the alumni. The college has a full time Mission office and a full chaplaincy, both working with the College community to draw energy from the sources of Ignatian Spirituality. The campus reminds one constantly of the core values of Ignatian spirituality, be it through the posters hanging in the campus or the variety of programmes offered to the students and faculty. FROM OUR INSTITUTIONSST JOSEPH’S, CALICUTSt Joseph’s Jesuit house is getting a face lift with some renovation work under the supervision of Fr Philip. We have a new entrance to the Jesuit house, and the chapel is relocated onthe ground floor. The candidates now get spacious study area. The Hr. Sec. School is brought under CCTV surveillance, and Fr Thadeyoos is coordinating the activities of the school. Fr Anto was on a visit to Tripura as member of a Province delegation. Fr Ramlat took over as Principal of the Junior School

on March 28. Fr Xavier, the outgoing Principal, moved to SICJ, Trivandrum. The Junior School organized a two- day renewal cum empowerment programme for its staff focusing on Jesuit legacy and integrating the vision and mission of the society with the annual plan of the school. The construction of a new floor at St Joseph’s Junior I C S E School is progressing steadily.

Jose MathewSARVODAYA, EACHOMEFr V T Jose handed over charge as Superior to Fr E J Thomas on May 6, and left for IRC, Pariyaram to join his new community. Fr Baby Chalil, Manager of Sarvodaya School for eight long years, also handed over charge to Fr E J Thomas on May22, and moved to Prasanthi, Pachilakad. Sarvodaya School and the Jesuit community are grateful to both of them for their tireless efforts to uphold our mission at Sarvodaya at a critical moment. The size of the Jesuit community has come down to three; the harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few.The HS and HSS sections have transformed their class rooms into hi-tech rooms supported by KITE and furnished with laptops and multimedia projectors under the general education protection campaign. Fr Wilson and Mr. Thomas, Principal, organized a special staff meeting to thank the staff and to celebrate the glorious result the school achieved in this year’s SSLC and HSE examinations. Forty six ST students passed SSLC and sixteen ST students passed PLUS TWO, and the School has 100 % pass in SSLC English medium and 100 % in Plus Two Science. Given the background of the students, this result has boosted the confidence of Sarvodaya campus. Fr Biju George attended the training programme for the HSS staff. Fr Anto Muringathery was the external member of the board for the selection of staff for LPST. Our visitors during this summer include the batches of Jesuit Novices and Scholastics.

E J Thomas & Biju GeorgeTUDI, EACHOMETUDI celebrated its 22nd Adivasi Gramotsavam on April 26 – 29, 2018. Fr M K George, our Provincial also was present.Students from the Arivuda tribal boarding came out with good results in SSLC and Plus Two exams. One of them got full A+ in SSLC. This year we expect 50 students in the boarding. We have appointed Mrs. Chithra Lekha as boarding warden cum mentor this year. The workshop was inaugurated by Fr E J Thomas and presided over by Mr. Gireesh, Panchayat Ward Member. Topics of the workshop included PESA (Panchayat Extension to the Scheduled Areas) 1996 and Social Audit.

Baby Chalil ST MICHAEL’S KANNURThe community was saddened by the sudden demise of Mr. Mathew, the elder brother of Fr Dominic Madathaniyil. Much renovation and development works took place in St Michael’s School in the summer months under the able leadership of Fr Dominic. It involved painting of the whole school, laying tiles in the class rooms and bringing the whole school under CCTV surveillance. Many students brought accolades to the school this year. 20 students won USS scholarship and 14 students secured LSS scholarship. Master Athul Regunath won the 26th rank in the national JEE B. Arc. examination.

KJ Mathew LOYOLA, ALUVABy the end of the first week of May all the novices returned to the community with new vigor and enthusiasm after their Mission & Hospital Experiments. These Experiments were indeed very challenging and enriching in many ways. In the second week of the month Fr Sunny Jose gave the novices a course on Jesuit

History in India. The lives and works of early Jesuits in India and Kerala were inspiring. Thank you, Sunny Acha! The second years had their home visits, too, during this month. The last week of the month was filled with fun and frolic as we, the novices, were enjoying our holidays at Pachilakad. We are deeply grateful to Fr Rachans and all the other Fathers at Pachilakad for their warm hospitality. On the way back we were privileged to spend a day at Christ Hall. Meeting the senior Fathers & Brothers was a moving experience for us. Thank you, Frs Reji, Thottan & the other Fathers!

The number of volunteers who helped the smooth running of the camps were 13 including three Muslims. Thanks to our Scholastics who chipped in to assist the camps. Another highlight of our Summer activities was the NLP programmes given to the staff of St. Paul’s School, Kalamassery and Vimala Central School, Karamcode. Atmamitra team has reached out to more than one thousand teachers from the four Corporate Management zones of Changanacherry Archdiocese. Teachers, Priests and the Bishops acknowledged the positive vibe created by our involvement. Fr Prince Clarence has joined Atmamitra as Associate Director. Frs PV Joseph and TV John are regular confessors as they are invited for this ministry at the Parithrana Retreat Centre run by the Vincentian congregation. They also help out at the Navajeevan Trust, Kottayam. AADI, ATTAPPADIThe 7th National Adivasi Festival at Attappadi was celebrated with gaiety and pomp in AADI, Attappadi. Smt. Ratna Ramamoorthy presided over the inaugural function, and C V Rajesh Vaidyar from Mukkali inaugurated it. Cultural troupes from various states presented programmes. AADI National Adivasi Mela has become one of the biggest festivals in Attappady and is unique by its very nature. Meticulous planning and execution by Fr Lenin Antony, Director, and his team made the festival a memorable one. AADI also conducted two Leadership Training programmes for about 150 students. A group of CLC members joined us for their three-day exposure programme under the guidance of Fr Lenin Antony. Students from many colleges came to AADI for their field placements. Other Lok Manch activities are going on well.

James MoraisIRC PARIYARAMThe month of May had been heavily packed with various events and programmes. Fr V T Jose, the new member, joined us in the first week of May and he is very active in the ministry. We began this month with a week-long retreat for Visitation Sisters from Alapuzha. A youth camp by an NGO was also held at IRC. Fr Provincial’s visitation made a great impact on the community. We wound up this month with our regular four-day retreat for lay people.

Raju AugustinePIUS X ITI, EDATHUAMany years ago Pius X ITI had a production centre attached to it. About 15 years ago the production unit was closed and the concerned Electrical Department was informed about it. In 2011 the Electricity Department inspected our Institution and found that we were using 25 Kilo watts instead of 16 Kilo watts that was allotted to us, and they issued a demand notice for Rs. 1,78,230/.

Kerala Tidings s 2018 June4

Since we were regularly paying the electricity bills, we complained to the Department. Several times we were called to explain our position on the payment. We also employed an Advocate to plead our case with Department and in the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Alappuzha. Finally, the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum issued an Order on March 14, 2018. It said, “In the light of the discussions the demand notice for 1,17,8230/- is squashed. The Electricity department is directed to issue provisional assessment order afresh, giving all opportunities under section 126 of the Electricity Act.” It is a great relief, indeed!

Mathew Pullattu SANTIGRAM, KANJIRAPALLY The newly-renovated and repainted Santigram building continues to evoke admiration from the visitors, and that makes us feel very happy, telling us that the investment of money in the building was a good move. After a long gap of 9 years, we were able to run The PEACE PROGRAMME, the flagship item of Santigram, for the second year in succession. Fr Wilson was away in Bangalore in early May for a meeting in connection with his new assignment as Coordinator for psycho-spiritual ministries. Fr MJ Thomas directed an 8-day retreat for a group of religious priests of the Congregation of St. Joseph. That was followed by a 5-day Workshop on METHODS OF PRAYER for Sisters of St. Joseph of Luzern. Early next month, he would be at it again - another Workshop on Methods of Prayer for the first year theologians of Mary Matha Major Seminary, Trichur. Fr Ephrem had 3 workshops on Self Esteem and Interpersonal relationships in the month of May. The fourth one had to be cancelled since he had to be hospitalized with acutely low level of sodium in the system, due to severe loose motion that lasted some days. He was admitted to the KIMS Hospital for 3 days. Fr Binu from St. Michael’s who was on a visit to us spent two days as a bystander, and we appreciate the generosity with which he happily stepped into the role. ICTA had its triennial election of office-bearers, and Mr. K A Sebastian was re-elected as President for the next 3 years.

EphremLOYOLA, MUKUNDARAThe fruit of the academic year is reaped with much happiness. The ICSE board exam results of the tenth class students made Loyola proud. All the five students who wrote their board exam in the name of Loyola School came out with luminous victory. With this very happy note, we are welcoming the new academic year. All the maintenance work is over. The school looks

very fresh in its new colour. With the addition of one more bus, the strength of our fleet has risen to eleven buses. Thanks to Loyola Sreekariyam for blessing us with their gift of one bus. This is a good sign of Jesuit collaboration in empowering each other in a common mission. Fr Biju Vadakkumchery made his annual retreat in preparation for his final vows here in Loyola Sadan. Fr Biju also helped our school to update and improve our library system. Frs Roy Alex, Reji and Thomas Karimundackal have been our guests in the month of May.

ManeshAICUF CENTER, TRIVANDRUMThe month of May was a time of many changes. Aicuf Centre gave a warm welcome to Frs Prince Clarence and Varkeychen, and Fr Babu Paul was given a fitting farewell. Fr Prince Clarence took charge as the new Director of the Centre and he is slowly getting into the shoes of the Aicuf Chaplin by becoming familiar with the leaders of the movement and its activities. AICUF organized a one-day workshop on May 12 at POC on Youth and Media with special reference to college campus on the occasion of KCBC Year of Youth; Fr George Sebastian was the resource person. The Jnanasameeksha group had one session on Prophets by Fr Thomas Karimundackal, and another session on Church History by Fr Babu Paul. Fr Babu Paul also gave a one-day orientation to the teachers of Fatima Matha Higher Secondary school at Neyattinkara on May 25. We had a gathering of all state office bearers of AICUF in the recent past in the presence of Fr Prince, the new Advisor; the group’s evaluation of Aicuf and sharing of experiences helped the new Advisor to get the pulse of the movement. Fr Varkeychan conducted a one-day seminar on Human Development at AICUF center for a group of forty young ladies from the coastal belt. He also gave orientation to the youngsters at the FIDES study center at Poonthura, guiding them to prepare for the university examinations.

Babu PaulSATYA NILAYAM, CHENNAISN, Chennai had a worn out look once the Scholastics left by the middle of April. A house that used to be bubbling with life fell silent. All staff members participated in the gathering of the staff of the Assistancy’s Common works at JDV for three days, April 16 to 18. Fr Vibin went over to Varanasi to do the follow-up to get his certificates. Fr E P Mathew proceeded to Loyola School, Pune for making the annual retreat. Fr E P Mathew participated in the meeting of the Deans and Presidents of the ecclesiastical faculties of Asia and Oceana, called

Kerala Tidings s 2018 June 5

by the Vatican Dicastery of Education, at Assumption University, Bangkok. The meeting was held on May 11, and this was also an opportunity to learn about the Jesuit apostolates in Thailand. Fr E P Mathew also preached a retreat for the Jamshedpur Jesuits at XLRI from May 23 to 31. Nearly 95 Jesuits including the scholastics participated in the retreat. Fr Prince and Sch Stevenson have completed their studies in Loyola and hence the number of Chennai Jesuits of our Province has come down drastically, but the new comers for Philosophy studies will keep up the Kerala numbers!

E.P. MathewKERALA PROVINCE ASSEMBLY 2018Province Assembly 2018 was held at Christ Hall on May18 and 19. The Assembly started with a prayer led by Fr Saji Arithiyal Puraidam followed by the lighting of the lamp. Fr M K George, the Provincial Introduced Fr Dionysius Vaz (KAR) who was invited to be the external observer, and spoke on the need to reinvent ourselves in order to remain relevant. the same in the province. Fr Roy Kuzhimannil, this year’s new priest, was honoured in the evening; we thanked the Lord for his gift in a Eucharistic celebration presided over by the new priest. Fr Provincial briefly presented the status of the Province, and it was followed by his open interaction with the members of the Assembly. We had a general evaluation of the two days moderated by Fr Jose Jacob. Fr Binoy summarized the sessions of the two days and indicated the future task of the APT. Fr Saji Mathew gave the vote of thanks. The APT hopes that the Commissions of the Province will be empowered to coordinate the execution of the apostolic plan of the Province and to monitor it in dialogue with directors of work and the apostolic communities. KERALA SCHOLASTIC FORUMThis summer had a lot of wonderful things in store for us. We started off with a Vacational Bible study camp at Pallithura, Trivandrum. That was followed by a series of fifteen camps and exposure programmes in the months of April and May. Some of the exposure programmes were in our own Jesuit communities. During our holidays we had an evaluation of the camps and the other programmes, and we saw that these had offered some unique experiences to all of us. Thanks to all the communities who obliged to accommodate us and joyfully shared with us the details of their ministry. We felt quite proud of ourselves as part of our Province. The Forum organized Skill Expansion Programme for Scholastics in the beginning of May in Christ Hall. We thank the Christ Hall community especially Frs Reji and Raphael Thottan for the hospitality and concern. Fr M K George, Provincial, spent a day with us teaching us basic managerial skills. It was very informative and useful. Fr P T Mathew gave us a historical overview of Jesuit presence in Kerala and of the history of Kerala Province. It was followed by a pre-camp conducted by Fr Vincent Pereppadan. We also owe a very special thanks to Fr Saji for reading through all our Ignatian papers and giving us valuable suggestions during our presentation. Schs Lijo and Rojas did a valuable service by collating all our Ignatian papers of this year and of the past years and releasing them as documents. During our holidays at Pachilakad, we gave farewell to Fr Anto Muringathery, former PCF. The young priests of the Province were also with us during the holidays. Our discussions helped us to commit ourselves to the Province’s efforts in promoting vocations to the Society. So we proposed to set up a team that would work with the vocation promotor during our holidays and at other times in keeping contact with potential candidates. Our annual retreat was an eco-retreat guided by Fr Robert Athickal(PAT) whose views on the environment, faith and religious life gave us a novel experience. We thank our Forum Coordinator Sch. Midhun and Summer Programme Coordinator Sch Lijo for making this year’s summer a memorable one under the able guidance of Fr Salvin
