Dear WInS Community,

Open Day

Many thanks to all the students, teachers, parents, grandparents, friends and friends of friends who

attended this years’ WInS Open Day festivities on Saturday 30th September. It was an all too rare opportunity for us to get together as a community to celebrate our school.

The diversity of activities from Early Years through to Secondary showcased all the wonderful experiences and opportunities available to our children who benefit from an international education.

A special “Thank You” must go to the organising committee, made up of Ms Josephine, Ms Low, Mr Jireh, Ms Ladonna, Ms Suhanti, Ms Ho and Mr Charles expertly overseen and led by Ms May.

A fun time was had by all, and the feedback I received on the day made me an extremely proud Principal.

Together we shine!

Official Launching of A’ Levels at WInS

On Friday 13th September, Woodlands announced its ‘AS’ and A’ Level launch for January 2018.

The event was attended by many of our Upper Secondary students, parents, news-media, guest speakers and VIPs (including many members of the Board of Governors and Board of Directors).

We were delighted to welcome the Regional Director of Cambridge for Malaysia and Brunei, Mr Ng Kim Huat, who presented an information session on the programme. Interestingly, Malaysia boasts some of the best A’ Level results among the 160 countries that run the Cambridge curriculum and this obviously bodes well for our students.

We are still operating our Early Bird sign-up for this programme – all fees included for 18 months – for just Rm 25,000

Staff In-Service Training

This month we are focusing on classroom management and behaviour. I had the opportunity to work with

all staff in an introductory session to look at a series of fundamental strategies, and this will be followed

up with Departmental sessions that reflect appropriate measures in the Early Years, Primary and

Secondary divisions.

Mr Darmel leads a brainstorming session

Sibu Marathon

I would like to congratulate all that took part in the Sibu Fun Run / Marathon held on Saturday 16 th

September. Plenty of Woodlands students, teachers and staff participated in this memorable event and

we hope it will become an annual event.

Going to the Dogs

Our Early Years students have been studying about “Transport and Occupations” and to this end we were fantastically assisted by the local K9 Police Dogs department who came into school on Wednesday 20 th.

There was much excitement when we were introduced to two of the police dogs for a live demonstration

of their skills for our students. Even some of our Primary classes came along. Our students were both

delighted and fascinated.

A big thank you to Sergeant McDonald and his team for organising the visit and assisting our young students in their learning.

Woodlands Outreach Road-Show

As part of our annual School promotion, I, Mr Charles and Ms Loh have been visiting numerous Primary

schools in Sibu. We had an opportunity to share our promotional video, updated our extensive PowerPoint

presentation and utilised a few of our student leaders to present the school from our students’ perspectives.

A big thank you to Deepti Nagori and Grace Tang Shi En (from 8W) and June Lee Jing (10W) for being great Woodlands’ student ambassadors.

Cyber World

A recent report that came out from the UK was published in the journal Psychological Science by Anne

Longfield (Children’s Commissioner for England) which compared the ‘consumption’ of online activity to

fast food addiction.

Longfield criticises the ways social media giants use to draw children into spending more time online. She said parents should be proactive in stopping their children from bingeing on the internet.

“Children are in danger of seeing social media like sweeties, and their online time like junk food.

None of us as parents would want our children to eat junk food all the time. For those same reasons we shouldn't want our children to do the same with their online time."

Longitudinal studies in binge use of ICT is still in its infancy, but the initial data looks worrying.

Over dependency can effect sleep patterns, stress levels, developmental speech impairment, childhood depression, attention deficit, increasing difficulties in real life social interaction and

eye strain. Children need parental guidance to live active healthy lives and avoid overdependency on ICT devices.

英国的AnneLongfield(英国儿童专员)最近在“心理科学”杂志上发表了一份报告, 内容是有关上
