From the Principal

The start of a new school year is always a wonderful experience. I love the excitement of current students

reconnecting with each other and sharing their holiday experiences and the mixture of sentiments ranging from

excitement to trepidation of our new students. I also love the conversations between teachers about new

programs, new content and new approaches in anticipation of the year ahead.

It was really pleasing that this year in particular these conversations were particularly animated as teachers

shared new ideas gleaned from the time we spent with Simon Brooks in the first of a series of workshops we are

undertaking this year that will explore what it takes to build a ‘Culture of Thinking’. This global initiative from

Harvard University has proven to be very successful in changing the academic culture of schools by creating a

culture of thinking based on the use of thinking routines that promote more effective use of language,

questioning, and discourse.

While we have not as yet scheduled information sessions to provide parents with a better understanding of how

this Kindergarten to Year Twelve initiative will impact on their students’ learning, I encourage interested parents

to read about the strategies they can expect their children to be learning over the coming twelve months and

beyond. Click here to read an excellent article by Ron Ritchards and David Perking to provide interested parents

with an overview of this program.

Supplementing this exciting initiative, teachers and students are also enjoying the vast range of opportunities

provided by the School’s new Learning Management Software (LMS), ‘Canvas’. This new software enables

teachers to send individual, group and course-wide messages to students and parents, and enables students to

communicate safely with teachers both during and after school hours.

As the Canvas project develops it is the School’s intention to co-enrol parents in Canvas with their child. This

will allow parents to view marks, upcoming assignments and due dates, missing work and teacher

communication more easily. We are also excited that the IT department will be systematically migrating all

School data to the cloud over the course of Term One. As part of this initiative students are already being given

secure access to OneDrive cloud storage, a move that is being very well received by those students who have

previously experienced difficulties in storing data on the server or on USB’s.

With all of these initiatives and the positive environment our teachers provide for the students, it has been a very

good start to the year, a view that is reflected in the very positive comments I have received from parents since

school resumed. There is nothing more satisfying for us as educators than to know that they we making a

difference to the lives of the young people you have entrusted to us and as always I am very appreciative of the

encouragement we receive from the positive feedback of students and parents.

I acknowledge however, that we are not perfect and at times things may go wrong and I emphasise again that I

want you to share those concerns with us, not others, so that we can address them in the most timely and

effective manner. We are very open to hearing how we are going, particularly when it is good but also when

there are areas where we can improve. There may also be things you do not know about the School or your

child’s program of studies and I encourage you to make the most of the different opportunities we provide for

you to meet other parents and become more familiar with the School’s operation.

These opportunities including the Tutor Interviews and Year Eleven Information Night, next Monday’s

Year Seven Information Night, regular meetings of the P&C Association, Parent Year Group Outings,

Parent/Student/Teacher interviews, and in particular, the ‘Parent Cocktail Party which will be hosted by the

school Council, in conjunction with the Northholm Association (P&C), on

Saturday 25 February, are excellent opportunities for new and old to mingle with each other and meet school

staff, members of the School Council and members of the P&C Association. I hope to see you there!

HSC – CLASS OF 2016

In general, I am very pleased with the overall school performance in the 2016 HSC. Given that we are being

compared with both selective and specialist schools our students have achieved some commendable results.

As a group the 2016 cohort out performed NSW State results in 82% of subjects. Within the cohort 22% of

Page 3: From the Principal - northholm.nsw.edu.au · From the Principal The start of a new school year is always a wonderful experience. ... a Master of Divinity, an MBA

3

students were included on the Distinguished Achievers List having achieved at least one Band 6 result. Several

students also received ATARs above 90, an outstanding achievement.

Of particular note however, was the number of students accepted into the Macquarie University Global

Leadership Entry Program.

Hannah Kohler: Bachelor of Law (Double degree of her choosing)

Heather Pym: Bachelor of Law/Global Studies

Zac Stosic: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

Gabrielle Mfula: Bachelor of Law/Media

Tom Jeffery: Bachelor of Business/Commerce

I take this opportunity to once again congratulate the 2016 cohort and to thank them for their wonderful

contribution to School life.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Thank you to the Administration staff, Grounds and Facilities staff, IT staff, teachers and the Senior Executive

team for their excellent work during the term break. Their outstanding efforts have ensured a smooth start to the

year. Major projects completed were the upgrade of the bus bay, the refurbishment of the Music Centre, the

installation of equipment in the new Fitness Centre on the Mezzanine Level of the Lincoln Centre and the move

to Canvas, the School’s new Learning Management System (LMS).

Some of you might also be interested to know that the School’s next major projects will be the installation of

Solar panels on the Lincoln Centre, a system that meets the School’s commitment to more sustainable practice

by providing 40% of the School’s future energy supply and the transfer of all School data to secure OneDrive

cloud storage

Not so popular perhaps, I should also mention changes to the canteen. I understand the removal of garlic bread

and chicken tenders has caused a deal of angst among students and I would like to assure parents that the new

alternatives are already proving very popular and ask that you encourage your students to try the new menu

items.

I would also like to thank parents for their support with the move to a cashless canteen. While I understand this

change may have caused frustration for some families, I am very pleased with the overall support and ensure

concerned parents that I acknowledge the need to provide students who are not on the system with an

alternative arrangement while families transition to this new system (rest assured no child will go unfed).

UNIFORM

Thank you to parents for your efforts in ensuring students are wearing the appropriate uniform. I was delighted to

see so many students’ well-groomed and wearing immaculate uniforms this week. I ask that you continue to

support this standard throughout the year. Uniform inspections will be conducted over the coming weeks to

ensure that students are well presented.

year Northholm students from Year Seven and some Year Eight will participate in this program.

In 2017 the following vaccines will be offered to Year Seven students*:

• human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in a 3-dose schedule at 0, 2 and 6 months

7

Parent Information Kits that include an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement will be sent

home with students to parents/guardians.

To consent to the vaccination of your child, parents/guardians are advised to:

• read all the information provided

• complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their child to

receive

• return the completed consent form to their child’s school

• ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.

Please note that students who commence HPV vaccination in school clinics in Year Seven but do not complete

the course during the school year may be offered catch-up doses at school in Year Eight. Students who have

any HPV doses at their GP will be advised to complete the course with their GP.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the Principal or

phoning the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at

www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation.

Year Seven student cards need to be completed and returned to Mr Tuynman no later than

Tuesday 7 February. The vaccination schedule is attached at the end of this Weekly Record.

To improve vaccination completion, students will be offered any missed doses throughout the year where

possible.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic either as a physical card or a

text message sent to the mobile number recorded on the consent form (within one business day).

Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their

child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination.

problems so while we work together to sort these issues out, please remember that online ordering is always

the best way to ensure your child receives their choice for lunch.
