Dear Families,
This week marked SSO Week and we acknowledged the wonderful work of
our co educators, also known as SSO’s at Modbury School. We have 14 co
educators at present with an additional 2 staff completing their Certificate 3 in
Student Support Education. For our school community, our co educators have
a pivotal role in supporting students with their individual learning needs. I
would like to recognise and thank all our co educators for their dedication to
their role and making a positive difference to our school community.
Week 5 saw a wonderful community breakfast organised and managed by
the Modbury School Community group. Trinity Church provided hot beverages
and once again volunteered their time. Thank you to all of our wonderful
volunteers for making this successful community event happen for our school.
Thank you to our Multicultural parent
group for providing a delicious lunch for
staff on Thursday 22 August to
acknowledge and share EID celebration,
marking the end of Ramadan. EID is a
very important time for Muslim families,
encompassed by acts of selflessness,
which includes prayer and charity to the
poor.
Farewell to our international Students
and their Families
On Friday, August 23 2019 we farewelled
our visiting students. Some of the
comments when the students were asked
about their stay were;
I really liked the teachers, they
were kind
Handball was great fun,
I made lots of new friends
I am not keen on Australian food
Playing on the playground was fun
The students were presented with a 2020
calendar featuring photos from their stay
at Modbury School providing them with a memento of beautiful photos of
classroom, assembly and special occasions of their stay.
Thank you to Nicole who supported the children and their families with
Chinese interpretation and building connections for us all.

In week 4 we celebrated National
Science Week. This year the theme was
Destination Moon: more missions, more
science! In LCB we have been learning
about the Sun, Earth and Moon in
Science and their relationship. As part of
our learning during Science week we
completed a STEM challenge using 3D
printing software - Makers Empire.
Our challenge was to design a creative
new rocket to send to the moon and
make a 3D model of it that we could
print using the 3D printers.
First we learned about the different parts
of a rocket and how they all work
together to get a rocket to its destination.
Then we had to design our own rockets.
We drew labelled diagrams of our plans
in our STEM books.
Next we used Makers Empire to create a
3D design on our Chromebooks or iPads.
We had to think about the shapes our
rocket was made up of and how we
could combine them to make a 3D
model. We also had to make sure all our
shapes were connected or they wouldn’t
print correctly in the next phase.
Finally, we sent our designs to Mrs T for
printing. She printed them on the printer
for us, some of our models didn’t print
how we had planned and we needed to
evaluate and make some changes to
our models and then reprint them.
Mrs T also downloaded some 3D models
of the moon’s surface from the NASA
website and printed those so we could
see exactly what the surface of the
moon looks like.
These are some of our finished 3D prints of
our rockets!

The Emotional Cup
Kirsty Brumby, Wellbeing Leader
Imagine that every child, indeed every person, has an emotional cup that needs to be filled in
order for them to engage meaningfully in everyday life and achieve to their best potential.
When their cup is empty they can become nervous, withdrawn or act out in ways we as adults
consider less than desirable. When the cup is full they are able to show resilience and deal with
the everyday ups and downs of their life.
As parents and educators, we are always trying to look for those subtle hints that something isn't
feeling quite right for our children. Below are some hints on what typically can empty a child's cup
and how we can be proactive in keeping it topped up.
What fills a child’s cup:
Play
Friendship
1:1 time
Love & Affection
Connection
Positive Feedback
Purposeful Praise
Feeling Supported
Doing activities they enjoy
What empties a child’s cup:
Stress or Pressure
Exclusion by peers
Feeling lonely
Not feeling heard or understood
Yelling & harsh punishment
Feeling unsuccessful
Tiredness
Not having basic needs met

Learning Community C - Room 6 & 7
STEM Living Pods Project
Imagine if Earth was uninhabitable and
you had to design and build a living pod
to colonise another planet; this is the
challenge that was given to our students
in Learning Community C.
I learned that you need a
lot of space for a little
farm and bedrooms and
solar panels which you all
need to survive. (Jack)
This is what some of the students said about their project:
My group chose the planet Saturn.
We designed and sketched a living
pod from a birds eye view and side
view before building our model
with cardboard and paper.
It was hard to make our model, but
it was so fun! (Sierra)
I learned about space
and about the structure of
building things, making
sure we try not to miss out
any important things. (Veronica)
My group chose Mars because it
is thought to support human life.
Our living pod included solar
panels to be energy self-
sufficient. (Prashan)
In STEM we had to
make a plan to live
on another planet.
We had to make a
life pod model from
cardboard. (Mitchell)

SAPSASA Netball, Football & Soccer
Well done to all students who participated in SAPSASA
Netball, Football and Soccer on the 16 & 23 August
2019. We played some hard-fought games on both
days but still kept a positive spirit.
Thank you to all parents and volunteers who assisted
with transport on these days. A very special mention to
Aaron Cavanagh who assisted with coaching our
soccer team. He shared his knowledge and passion
in soccer throughout the day and provided some useful
game strategies which helped our students win a game
of soccer last week.
