Code Club Australia We had Kelly from Codeclub Australia visit the school on Wednesday and work with 20 students using the program ‘Scratch’. The mission of Code Club Australia is to give every child in Australia the chance to learn to code by providing project materials.

Learning to code is an important skill now we’re living in a digital age. It’s not just enough for children to know how to use technology. They should know how it works too. Learning to code strengthens problem solving skills and logical thinking. Mrs Smith & Mrs Wilkins do provide the opportunity for the children to use coding software as part of the ICT program and Mrs Murphy also runs a lunchtime Coding Club. Japanese Students Visit We had 20 Japanese students from Parkdale Secondary College’s sister school visit the school on Wednesday. They participated in activities with some of the Grade 5/6 children, which included Origami with Mami Sensei and Calligraphy in the Art room with Mrs Clough. MYTERN Building your child’s emotional resilience: Using MYTERN in everyday situations

Your child comes home from school and complains that someone has made them sad or angry. Explain to your child that although the other child probably shouldn’t have said or done that, they still didn’t have the ability to take control of their steering wheel. Help them understand that it was their decision to drive down the angry or sad road. The other person didn’t MAKE them do it. It’s ok to drive down a red road as this builds resilience, but they are not to stay on that road for too long.

Ask them what road they are now on. If they are on a red Buska road, discuss what type of PETS could help them drive on to a better road. Try not to focus on the reasons WHY your child is on a red Buska road. Focus on the PETS that can help them to regain control of their steering wheel getting them off the red Buska road and onto a green Reapo road.

Your child needs to begin to understand that even though they may not be able to control circumstances or other people, they ALWAYS have the option to control how they feel and which road they drive down. It is the feeling of control that we are trying to convey.

Family Activity: Discuss how easy it is to blame others and circumstances for how we feel. Have each member of the family give an example of when they have blamed others and how they could have taken control of their steering wheel in that situation. Leanne Bradney Principal

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

PREP This coming Monday will be the Prep’s 100th day of school! How exciting! Remember to come dressed up in something to do with the number 100.

Next week’s CAFÉ focus is ‘cross checking’ and our letter is ‘y’. Next week is also Numeracy Week and we will be celebrating with all sorts of fun numeracy activities including an incursion.

GRADE 1 Thank you for the donation of black tights/stockings for 1S and 1J’s Concert costumes. We have an amazing group of helpers creating gorgeous “red black spiders”. 1M & 1A have some eager helpers too. We are very lucky and appreciative of our parent support!

Our ‘Dr Seuss’ topic is underway and the students are thoroughly enjoying the unique writing style and rhyming patterns of many of his books. Thank you to those parents and students who have lent us their books for this topic.

We are continuing our CAFÉ focus on ‘retell’. Ask your child to retell you their favourite ‘Dr Seuss’ book!

A reminder to keep up the daily reading at home and sign those Traffic Lights/Reading Logs. Daily reading improves confidence, fluency and helps develop a love of books!

GRADE 2 In Maths this week, we started our new topic, ‘Money’, with children focusing on identifying, counting and using notes and coins. It would be terrific if children could use these skills in practical situations outside of school as well.

Our CAFÉ focus this week is ‘Infer the meaning of unknown words’. We are encouraging students to read the whole sentence, think about the word in context, and use prior knowledge to help them work out the meaning of unknown words when reading.

As part of our Inquiry topic, ‘May the FORCE be with you’, we focused this week on the push/pull forces that are applied in various sports. Ask your ‘little scientist’ if they can give you an example.

Next week is Numeracy Week. We are looking forward to putting our Maths minds together during multi-age rotations and a special in-school visit!

GRADE 3/4 Students are working hard to make their Concert item amazing for their audience.

We are continuing to study angles and shapes in our maths classes. Our CAFÉ focus this week is ‘Identifying the author’s purpose’.

On Tuesday the students became scientists as explorers during our rotations and over the next few weeks will be investigating solids, liquids and gases and the property of materials.

No ROAR reading Wednesday 29th July due to our Maths Incursion.

Congratulations to our AR Certificate recipients: Eddie T, Charlie G, Alfie B, Erika K, Luella C, Tess A, Kate S, Ella G, Jaz L, Annelise W, Hugo E, Neve G, Grace R, Jade B, Xavier S, Ella D, Ethan B and Tiffany B. GRADE 5/6 Well done to all the girls who have participated in the football and soccer days – all feedback has been extremely positive.

All grade 5/6 students should be thinking about, or should have decided what topic they are focusing on for their Term 3 project. Please be aware that for the first few weeks the project will be done at school, unless they wish to type at home. Students will need to print out or put information on a USB ready for next week.

Grade 6 students have started their memory books, and we request that a scrapbook is purchased for this activity if you haven’t already done so. Grade 5 students are busy planning their challenge, design, create, present activity.

With various sporting days, the concert, camp and other activities, we are in for a busy term so please check out school website for updates. VICTORIAN PREMIERS’ READING CHALLENGE Congratulations to Lauchlan D. and Oscar L. in Year 3, Allegra L. and Isabelle T. in Year 1 and Matilda C. in Year 2 for completing the Premiers’ Reading Challenge.

Several children are registered for the Challenge, but have not entered any books. If you have trouble logging on or do not wish to continue please contact me. [email protected]

PARKDALE OSHC NEWS

Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome back for Term 3. We are pleased to now offer breakfast in the mornings and a variety of healthy snacks in the afternoon. We have fresh fruit and water available at all times. The children have been enjoying our menu, a copy of which is available at the service. We welcome new staff member Jay to our program. Jay has been involved in musical productions and we are looking forward to him sharing his skills and talents with the group. It has been rather cold so we have been making use of the gym for directed games and sports with small groups. Our craft activities have involved the winter theme with children making a weather wheel. As always our games are put to good use with fun games of Celebrity Head, Monopoly and Uno. Some children have been completing their homework with an educator’s assistance. As usual we will take the Prep children to their classes in the morning and collect each afternoon.
