FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Meet and Greet – Last Week

It was tremendous to see so many parents come along to the ‘Meet and Greet’ sessions last Wednesday.

While it was certainly an opportunity to meet me and ask questions, it was also an opportunity to talk

about the vision for the school for the coming years. At both sessions generous and productive discussion

took place with a number of themes regarding the vision for the school being consistently raised. They

were:

Ensuring that there is a mastery of key literacy and numeracy skills for all students

Continue to deliver key subjects such as English, Maths, Science, and Humanities and ensure that

gender participation rates in STEM subjects are balanced.

A teaching of skills such as creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration that will

prepare students for an increasingly complex life

Utilising information, communication and technology effectively but to make sure that they do

not take over the human dimension of teaching.

Other themes included – lifelong learning, global citizenship, resilient learners, Asian literacy,

learning beyond the classroom, acknowledgement of ‘soft’ skills as being important, flexibility,

adaptability, kindness and looking after others.

From the meetings, a number of parents have volunteered to be on a working party to develop a school

vision statement, one that consolidates the ideas of the meetings and provides a reference for what we

value as we move forward as a 21st century school. Once the statement is developed, I will publish it in

this newsletter and seek further comment and input from you. A big thank you to all involved and please

look forward to another forum to be held next term.

Zone Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to our team of swimmers who excelled last Tuesday in the Zone Carnival. Overall our

school achieved second place in the carnival with there being outstanding individual and team

performances by all swimmers. A considerable number of students have made it through to the Area

carnival being held tomorrow at Homebush. We wish them all the best of luck. A full run down of Zone

results is to be found inside this newsletter.

RECENT EVENTS

Clean Up Australia Day Report

Congratulations to all students who participated in Clean up Australia Day. There was a buzz of

activity with students and teachers seen weeding, collecting litter, clearing leaves and generally

making our school a cleaner, tidier place. All students were demonstrating pride in their school

and of course supporting this National Initiative.

Act locally, think globally is a great slogan that demonstrates the need for every individual on

our planet to contribute to the protection of our planet as each small effort combines to a

mammoth global effort.

How do you contribute each day? Think about your efforts…. Let’s make our school

environment a cleaner place everyday!!!!!

Chess Years 3 - 6

Are you interested in representing our school in the NSW Junior Primary Schools Chess

Competition?

WHEN IS IT? During 2nd and 3rd terms, usually after school on Fridays. Games normally last

for approximately an hour.

WHERE? Games are played on a "home and away" basis: i.e. some games will be played at school

while others will be played at nearby participating schools.

WHY COMPETE? There are tremendous benefits for children involved in the competition - new

outlook, new friends, intellectual stimulation, improved concentration, a new reason to develop

self-esteem.

For further details, contact Mrs Vather in Room 14 by Friday, 16th March. A commitment is

required.

$1811.01 raised through School Banking in 2017! Thanks to the fantastic efforts of our students we have raised $1811.01 for our school through the School Banking Contributions Program in 2017. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

These funds will go towards to P&C, where it will be funding the students’ needs. Saving regularly is an important habit to get into, whether you're saving a little or a lot. Keep up the great work and remember, School Banking day is every Thursday. The program require parent volunteers to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes a small amount of your time one day a week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising. If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please Please email the School Banking Team at [email protected] , phone/SMS Olivia on 0422511327.

Uniform shop

The P&C runs the school's uniform shop. Our uniform shop is staffed entirely by parent volunteers who generously give up their time to make sure our uniform items are always in stock. Without our parents generously donating their time to keep our uniform shop running, we will not be able to provide this service to our families. By having our uniform shop on the school grounds, we can keep costs to a minimum and thereby offer affordable uniforms to parents.

The uniform shop needs volunteers! If you would like to become part of our fabulous uniform shop team, please contact the uniform shop [email protected]. You can volunteer as much or as little of your time that suits you.

Uniform items can be purchased online at http://www.flexischools.com.au/. Please note that on-line ordering is only available during school term. Our uniform shop trading times are as followings:

We have EFTPOS and credit card facilities available at the uniform shop for your convenience.

If you would like to receive news from the P&C and get copies of our meeting Agenda and Minutes, just send an email to [email protected] so that we can add you to our mailing list.

Have a great week

SECOND HAND UNIFORM SALE CASH ONLY

Monday 26 March and Tuesday 27 March 2018

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Term 1 is whizzing by so fast and before we know it, the students will be in their Winter Uniforms! Full

Winter Uniform is usually worn by no later than week 3 of Term 2.

Once again, we will be holding our BHNPS Second Hand Uniform Sale over 2 days. Monday 26 March

before school from 9.00am to 10.00 am and Tuesday 27 March in the afternoon from 2.30pm to 3.15pm.

The sale is for anyone who would like to buy or sell second hand uniforms that are in good, clean

condition. The sale will be held in Quad 1 near the steps to the Uniform Shop.

Get your uniforms ready for sale and bring them to school between Monday 12 March and Thursday

22 March. All uniforms for sale are to be individually and clearly labelled (using the attached labels)

and in a bag. Sellers need to also complete the attached form.

PLEASE LEAVE YOUR ITEMS FOR SALE IN THE BOX BY THE FRONT OFFICE. This will be

collected regularly.

Sellers decide the price of each item for sale. Using the labels provided in this newsletter, please safety

pin your completed label to each item to be sold. From a safety aspect, please do not use dressmaker

pins or staples.

$1 from each item sold will be donated to the school. The remainder of the money for items sold will

be sent to the seller via their child’s classroom along with any unsold items after the sale. If you have

friends who want to sell uniforms, please arrange with each other so that your child can bring it to school

and take any unsold items home. If you would like to buy any items and are unable to come at the sale

times, try to arrange with other parent(s) who could buy on your behalf.

Clean and neatly presented items sell best. Please note, unwashed uniforms will not be included in the

sale.

NO ITEMS DROPPED OFF DIRECTLY TO THE SALE WILL BE ACCEPTED - NO EXCEPTIONS.

The last day to drop off your items to the office will be Thursday 22nd March.

This sale will be run by volunteer parents. If you would like to volunteer to help, please contact Sophie

on [email protected] or Sharon on [email protected]

If you have any queries, please contact either of us. Please note this uniform sale is not connected

with the School Uniform Shop - no returns, no refunds are possible.

Cash only will be accepted on the day.

Many thanks,

Sophie Roche and Sharon Brown

HAST TESTING – NORTHMEAD HS

Over the past several years Northmead Creative and Performing Arts High School has been implementing a Gifted and Talented Academic Program, the entry to which has become extremely competitive. Selection into this academic program is based on an entrance examination. This year for the 2019

placement, we will be conducting a Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST). Please note that this

program is for selection to the academic program, rather than the Creative and Performing Arts

stream. However, the two streams are not necessarily mutually exclusive. . The non-refundable

cost to parents for this examination is $69.00 which is what the school is charged and covers the cost

and marking of the examination.

Testing will occur on Tuesday March 27th, 2018 from 9.00am to 1.00pm at Northmead Creative and Performing Arts High School in the school library. There will be four (4) tests which will include:

Reading Comprehension 45 minutes

Written Expression 25 minutes

Mathematical Reasoning 40 minutes

Abstract Reasoning 30 minutes Candidates who arrive late for the first test will be admitted only at the discretion of the supervisor, and additional time will not be allowed. Parents who are interested in applying for a placement in this class can find the application form on the school website and may contact the school for further details if required. A Botrill Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator
