From the Principal Dear Reader, staff and students had their Winter Academic Break and came back refreshed and ready for work. It continues to be a busy time here at the School. The last few weeks have seen the School staff involved in preparing the Academic Reports which have now been released. There have also been many events that have taken place at the School, as well as excursions outside the School. A few students are regularly being dropped off at the School in the morning before the School has its full complement of staff at work. At times, some students are even arriving before 7am! Inappropriately early arrival potentially poses a duty-of-care risk to those students. We recognize that some parents start work quite early, and whilst our full staff complement does not arrive until 7:30am, the School will trial a scheme whereby parents who absolutely must drop children at the School early can do so from 7am. Please, under no circumstance drop a child here before 7am. In the afternoon the majority of our staff depart the School at 3:45pm (I do not, of course) so all children should be picked up no later than 4pm. It is important for parents to adhere with these times. Our upcoming Global Day (GD) event, arranged by our PE Department, is both an educational activity as well as an entertainment activity. As an IB School – and one which has students and staff from many countries in its ranks – it is important to celebrate cultural and linguistic diversity. Now rescheduled to Thursday 2nd March between 2:30pm and 5:30pm, the GD is aimed at doing this. Please note that students involved directly with the GD will be asked to represent specific countries and not necessarily their own country. This should help to broaden their knowledge about other countries and cultures. Finally, the School has now entered its ADEC School Inspection process. This comprehensive review of the School will help us to determine what we do well and can be celebrated, and what we can do better and work toward improving. The Inspection finished on Thursday 23rd February. Please join us in hoping that we have done well.

Social Studies Exhibition

The Social Science Exhibition was held at ASAD on November 29, 2016. The Exhibition showcased various projects and models prepared by the PYP and MYP students as a part of their project-based learning. The projects and models that were put on display were related to UAE culture. Students and Staff from GEMS Cambridge International School were invited to view the Social Studies Exhibition at ASAD. There was a great deal of enthusiasm shown by all students as everybody warmly appreciated the hands-on approach to the learning aspect.

The Arab Reading Challenge

An initiative to encourage students in the UAE and Arab world to read was launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The Arab Reading Challenge aims for a million students in the Arab world to read 50 million books. The challenge aims to encourage sustainable and regular reading among students, which will be achieved through an integrated system for supervising students throughout the academic year. The School has proudly taken the challenge.

A Prayer for rain or Salaat al Istisqaa

The President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan called for a prayer for rain, or Salaat al Istisqaa, to be performed at all mosques and prayer areas across the UAE on January 10, 2017 at 7:30 in the morning. The prayer follows the Sunnah (practices, customs and traditions) of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). Following the directive of his Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ASAD students prayed Salatul Istisqaa for rain. Staff and students took part in this important activity, as shown by the photographs below.

ELMO has arrived! ELMO is in the house! No, not ELMO from the Sesame Street show, rather it is ELMO the portable integrated whiteboard (IWB) wireless pen. This nifty device works with any flat surface (like a wall or a standard whiteboard), an overhead projector and a computer to form a transportable IWB or Electronic Smartboard. Two ASAD teachers have tested ELMO in their lower grade PYP classes and reported that their lessons immediately became more vibrant and engaging for students. Students were able to come up to the whiteboard and interact with the material being used by the teacher. The animated faces of the students showed how much they enjoyed the experience. The School is determining how best to use ELMO and in which classes it would have academic impact.

Spektron display Our new Spektron 65” Interactive LED Display unit has been set up in the KG area. It’s a monitor screen. It’s a computer. It’s an Interactive Whiteboard! Is there anything it cannot do? Well, maybe. But it is already proving to be a hit with KG teachers and students alike even though it is yet to be fully used within our teaching and learning effort. We are exploring ways that the Spektron can help our ‘little ones’ to better learn and in the process we too are learning. Here are just a couple of photos showing the Spektron in action. We will prepare a short video of it in use and put it on our Facebook page soon.

Year 5 Math lesson by student

Passing by a Year 5 classroom recently, the Principal spotted a young student ably leading his peers through a ‘mini’ Math lesson. Never one to miss an opportunity, the Principal took a photo to commemorate the occasion. The picture shows Jonathon Lupfer in Grade 5C doing a great job. Jonathon appeared to have ‘his’ class focused and on-task with learning effectively occurring - no mean feat! Could we have a budding teacher in our student ranks? I think we just might!

Year 1 trip to the Heritage Village

The Year 1 Teachers jumped for joy as we came to the end of another very successful excursion. Year 1 Students had their curiosity satisfied as they discovered all the entertaining and also fascinating experiences the heritage village had to offer. The beautiful camel and the stunning horse wowed the students, showing them how Emirati families travelled in the past. The quite exquisitely handcrafted wooden and stone houses amazed the students as they discussed similarities and differences to their own modern homes. The water-well allowed the students to appreciate current day life in the U.A.E. A tour around the museum captivated students as they explored artifacts from the past. The heritage village provided an area where the students were fortunate to see how different items were made such as carpets and teapots. It was then time for a delicious lunch as the red carpet was laid out. Students reflected on the events of the day before making the trip back to school. Well done to the Year 1 Students on working so hard with this unit!

Emirati Values Assembly The MYP students attended an Assembly on Emirati Values. Students enjoyed a presentation organized by Year 9B, and they then watched an interesting short-duration documentary about the History of the UAE and the values that drove this nation towards development and success. Attendees showed great interest in the information provided and enjoyed how it was conveyed – this was evidenced by the applause at the end of the Assembly.

Heritage and National Identity Seminar

The Department of Social Studies at the Australian School of Abu Dhabi hosted Professor Mohammad Ismail, a lecturer from the National Archives. He gave the students of Grades 6 to 9 a lecture on heritage and national identity. He highlighted the importance of heritage in our lives to strengthen national identity and the role of the people of the UAE in preserving the legacy of generations and uphold customs, traditions and the Islamic religion. Professor Mohammad also highlighted the challenges facing us due to the problem of globalization and multiculturalism.
