TOS Newsletter March 2020 Orchid Colleagues, These very trying times remind me of what we all think of as the typical doctor’s consultation when he (or she) sits down and tells you ‘I have good news and bad news’. First the good news; our TOS field trip to Philadelphia went near seamlessly. Thanks to Ellen and her planning our trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show and Longwood Gardens was fantastic. I was stationed in Philadelphia for a time when I was in the Navy and did my resident training at the University of Pennsylvania so going back to Philly was a special treat for me. The flower show is enormous and our friend of the TOS, David Ott of Waldor’s Orchids had a terrific exhibit and a large selection of orchids at his retail booth. If you have never been to this floral event and enjoy any type of gardening (you must or why would you be a member of an orchid society) I encourage you to go when you can get away. The show is held at the Philadelphia Convention Center which is literally across the street from the Reading Market which is to food that the flower show is to plants. From Philadelphia we went west to Longwood Gardens. What a stunning facility. It is the Norfolk Botanical Gardens on steroids. We were all bowled over by their Orchid Extravaganza and it is absolutely worth a return trip just to walk their gardens. This is absolutely “must see”venue. The bad news; because of the accelerating coronavirus pandemic there are increasing restrictions on any type of public gathering Trustees Roseann Wade John Grocholl Barbara MacKechnie Marty Drees Nell Drees Dori Iwanowski From the President 2019-2020 Event Schedule Aug 25: Peter Breed – Neofinetias and Vandas Oct 6: Donated Plant Auction Nov 3: Eric Sauer - Maxillaria Dec 8: Awards Banquet Jan 5: Garland Hanson Feb 2: Round Table Discussion Mar 1: Art Chadwick – Growing Orchids in the Home Apr 5: Linda Thorne - meeting canceled May 3: Purchased Plant Auction Jun 7: Auction/Picnic Other Volunteers AOS Rep ………………. Orchid Colleagues,

These very trying times remind me of what we all think of as the typical doctor’s consultation when he (or she) sits down and tells you ‘I have good news and bad news’. This is absolutely “must see”venue.

in an attempt to blunt the covid19 spread. This clearly affects us and our ability to hold our planned meetings. With the botanical gardens meeting rooms closed and because we are all good citizens and will closely follow what our public health experts tell us to do to fight this virus, our April meeting is canceled. Our speaker, Linda Thorne, was understanding and I am sure we will make every effort to bring her back in the near future. Linda always provides a great talk and brings some of her beautiful plants to sell. So we will look forward to the time when we can invite her back. Hard as I try my crystal ball remains foggy on predicting when this viral nightmare ends and we can gather again. Your officers and trustees understand the desire of our members have to meet and we will continue to work to provide meaningful and enjoyable meetings when we can resume our monthly meetings.

From the President – cont’d

Unfortunately, as this pandemic continues we may not be able to meet again any time soon which will put our planned May and June events at risk. Not the news any one wants to hear let alone give but as my Dad used to tell the much younger me during trying times; “this too shall pass”. In my then young eyes, my Dad was always right and he will be correct again this time. Please stay safe, be well, connect to your orchids and check out the on-line library of webcasts at the AOS website.
