TOS Newsletter February 2020 Orchid Colleagues, My office manager very recently bought several lovely midsized Phalaenopsis from Fresh Market for my office staff to show our appreciation for their dedicated work and to celebrate Valentine’s Day. As I often do with store bought orchids, I read the attached care instructions to satisfy my curiosity on the accuracy of the grower’s recommendations. Surprising, the recommendations are fairly reasonable; avoid direct sunlight, water when the media gets a bit dry, fertilize weakly weekly and no mention of ice cubes. These babies are nice enough to re-bloom and the instructions, if followed, encourage the maintenance of a healthy plant. So, as we pivot through Valentine’s Day and head toward March we all might have thoughts of the coming spring with its longer days and warmer weather. Of course, this winter has been markedly unpredictable so who knows what to expect this spring; maybe it will snow. No matter what the weather or season, good plant care is critical to growing healthy plants and spectacular blooms. And the TOS has your back! Alice was ensured that our monthly programs are educational and the February meeting was no exception with member directed round table discussions on plant culture in the various environments we typically grow in; greenhouse, windowsill (inside) and combination of inside/outside. Art Chadwick, who runs Richmond’s Chadwick and Son Orchids, author of numerous articles and books and renowned speaker, will head line our March meeting and will speak on growing orchids in the home. Orchid Colleagues,

My office manager very recently bought several lovely midsized Phalaenopsis from Fresh Market for my office staff to show our appreciation for their dedicated work and to celebrate Valentine’s Day. These babies are nice enough to re-bloom and the instructions, if followed, encourage the maintenance of a healthy plant. presented to the TOS several times and has always been insightful and willing to share his vast knowledge of everything orchid. He most recently gave an outstanding webinar on large Cattleya species through the AOS and for those of us who favor these amazing plants his greenhouse and retail store are like a visit to Mecca.

Of course, all our orchid knowledge is wasted if we don’t share it. Our monthly meetings are a great educational source but so are our new member classes. Patsy has organized these classes and the frequent educational field trips for more than several years and deserves our hardy thank you! Our February class featured Dave Bryan’s presentation on plant labels which is so critical in preserving the identification and preservation of orchid species and their hybrids. Second billing to that class was Jamie (who?!) who gave an introductory talk on bugs and pests. Patsy has a field

talk on bugs and pests. Patsy has a field trip planned for the March Beginners class as the educational beat goes on. If you are interested in sharing your growing experiences talk to Patsy or any of the TOS officers as opportunities are available.

As spring approaches the pace of the year seems to accelerate. We are presenting a display at the Virginia Orchid Society’s AOS judged show at Strange’s Nursery in Richmond the weekend of February 20th-23rd. Our ultimate field trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show and Longwood Gardens heads out March 7th and there is still spaces available. To sign up to go you will need to hustle and give Ellen a call to reserve a seat. We have a lot to look forward to as we try to wave good-bye to winter and say hello to spring. Enjoy your plants, keep them happy and see you in March.

Art holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State and an MBA from James Madison University. He founded Chadwick & Son Orchids Inc in 1989 with his father who has been growing orchids since 1943.

‘The Classic Cattleyas’ is widely considered to be the definitive book on large-flowered Cattleya species and was written by Art and his father. Martha Stewart favorably reviewed the now-sold out book and had both Chadwicks on her TV Show. A 2nd edition is planned for January 2020.

Art has the distinction of naming Cattleya hybrids after the wives of the last five U.S.

Presidents and personally presenting the flowers to most of the honored recipients. He has spoken at two World Orchid Conferences - France 2005, Ecuador 2017 and his popular orchid advice column appears each month in many newspapers around the country.

Chadwicks operates 11 greenhouses in rural Powhatan County, a retail store in Richmond, and boards over 13,000 orchids for local clients. The company was recently featured in Southern Living magazine, The New York Times, the Washington Post, CBS Sunday Morning, and O Magazine.
