We are requesting each golfer, each member, each family, all who care about the future of our Club and its enhancement along with our Clubs value within our community to con- sider stepping up as well. Pledges have been personal and are being made in varying amounts as we partner in this effort. Many are choosing to write a single check. Some are choosing to pledge $83 per month for one year. We have available to us an “Unexpected” unique, immediate and urgent “Opportunity”. The key words are “Unexpected Opportunity”…... Green Tee Golf – led by Mr. Earl Sanders – who many of you know and who has worked with our Club for years on various course projects is moving its headquarters from Ken-tucky to Augusta, Georgia. Green Tee Golf is relocating to be closer to the Augusta Na-tional Golf Club (The Master’s) and to numerous more Southern golf courses to continue to provide installation of The Better Billy Bunker System to enhance playability and re-duce costs at courses throughout the South and Southeast. In the future, following Green Tee’s move, it will be considerably more costly, cumber-some and time consuming for Green Tee Golf to mobilize equipment, labor, materials, infrastructure, etc. to execute projects for our Club in Paducah including the continuation of converting our remaining 34 bunkers to the Better Billy Bunker System. Our unexpected opportunity is … Mr. Earl Sanders before leaving our region for the land of Bobby Jones has “made-us-a-deal” to upgrade & complete our remaining sand bunkers to the ‘Better Billy Bunker System’ before he, his family, equipment and workers fully exit our area. The reason this opportunity is so attractive for our Club and this is important – we spend a significant amount of money, labor & resources repairing, raking and refinishing our sand bunkers after each and every rain event. Think about this for a minute please … after eve-ry rain event, most of our sand bunkers wash and many become small ponds. This re-quires considerable man hours and club expense to remedy. This year-to-date alone, given our significant rainfall, Shannon calculated we used 2,045-man hours raking bunkers! In-deed, bunker repair consumes more labor hours than most other grounds activity at our club! Wow. The best use & cost effectiveness of our grounds crew is likely not constant-ly being in the bottom of a sand bunker with a rake? This necessity prevents Shannon and crew from having time for other projects such as cutting trees or working to make the pe-ripheral of our course more beautiful and they have less time for our fairways & greens. It is possible we might even be able to reduce the number of grounds crew on campus or be able to focus more attention to our clay tennis courts and other campus facilities. Our Club wants to take advantage of this Unexpected Opportunity but our financial re-sources cannot accomplish this alone during the very short period of time the offer will be available to us. We are asking our membership to come together to take advantage of this Unexpected Op-portunity which will not be available to us again. Golf Course News Shannon Watson, CGCS

Our first drought of the year was finally broken in October. The turf needed this moisture, as the weather transitions from the fall into winter. Another added benefit of precipitation is the irrigation system is getting a much-needed rest after the mature trees on the course started to affect some of the tees and fairways. Hopefully, we will get timely rains as we enter the last part of the year, so the turf enters dormancy with ade-quate hydration.

Our fall maintenance protocol is in full swing. We hit our cooling degree days for our bermudagrass suppression appli-cations. This application, along with a fungicide and preemergent were applied for fungal activity and winter annual weeds. The collars were treated with fungicide only. No bermudagrass control is ap-plied to the collars due to their high population of 419 ber-mudagrass. The fungicide applications to combat large patch disease of zoysia are key to fall/spring turf health, with the preemergent making things cleaner! The overseed process has been completed on all holes. We still must overseed a few of the large fescue areas and re-seed some areas underneath tree canopies. We hope to complete this process the first couple weeks of the month. Once the overseed process is complete, we will apply fertilizer to the rough to develop the seedlings over the winter, ensuring a tight green turf next spring.

After a successful greens aeration and seeding in late summer, the greens continue to have excellent density. We applied

TGR growth regulator in early October. The greens respond-ed well to the application. This application regulates both the bentgrass and the poa, but its effects are shorter on the bent-grass. Once the bentgrass starts to come out of regulation, the bentgrass can out compete the annual bluegrass. Any newly germinated poa has a hard time surviving the regulation and competition from the bentgrass. Over the past few weeks, we have altered the mowing and topdressing schedule to fit the rate of growth of the greens. We have only been cutting the greens a few times a week since growth has significantly di-minished due the growth regulator application. The cooler

temperatures and less photoperiod during the day have also served as a natural growth regula-

tion without the addition of the growth regulator. We will apply one more

application of TGR in mid-November, to ensure that we

are as poa free next spring as possible.

November will be a busy month for the remaining

crew. We are spending a fair amount of time each day

cleaning up leaf debris. We also hope to get all the sprinklers

edged over the next month, bunkers deweeded, start pruning fairway trees,

work on the irrigation system, and close the sea-son out strong with our chemical and cultural practices. As always, we want to keep moving forward.

See you on the course!

If we were to accomplish this … it would pay our club & our members back in dividends in reduced costs and al-low the redeployment of our grounds crew to focus on other value enhancing areas of our Club & grounds for years and decades into the future! Please join us today by pledging your support to help us take advantage of this unique & time sensitive opportunity by responding with your “Unexpected Opportunity” pledge by email to [email protected] or to any of our Club executive team. ‘Pledge cards’ will be available from Chad at the Pro Shop, David & Angie at the Clubhouse or Chris at the Tennis Center. As always, thank you, as we continue to strive together the make our Club the best it can be. Sincerely, Board of Directors Golf and Grounds Committee Chad Martin, PGA Golf Professional Shannon Watson, Golf Course Superintendent

Favorite Hole at CCP: I enjoy Hole #3. I think it is an underrated golf hole and doesn’t get talked about that much. For me I can play it a couple of ways; I can hit hybrid off the tee and lay up before the fairway bunkers or try and hit it up over the trees and leave myself a short shot into the green. I enjoy the risk/reward the hole has to offer.

Favorite tournament at CCP: Member/Guest because I enjoy seeing the members have a good time and the crowd it brings out on the final day. I know all of us put a lot of work in for this event and its fun seeing how a well-organized tournament comes together. I have made a lot of memories during this event over the years.

How has being fit for clubs helped your game? Getting fit for clubs is necessary! Playing the right equipment tailored for your game is the best thing you can do. I’m fortunate to be on staff with Callaway and I love that they offer equip-ment for any level of player out there. Next time you are in the market for new clubs, please come see the Professional Staff at CCP so we may custom fit you for your game.

Pro’s Corner

I would like to encourage everyone to come out and use your facility as much as possible this month so that you can enjoy the wonderful condition of the golf course and the beauty of the outdoors as the fall season arrives.

A big CONGRATS goes out to our 2nd Assistant Professional, Nick Daugherty, for passing his PGA Play Ability Test. Nick has now passed the first hurdle on the path to PGA membership. Next time you see Nick at the Club please give him your congrats on a job well done.

For those that do not know, our long-time shop assistant, Ryan Ray, has left CCP to pursue a career option outside of golf. Ryan served 11 years at the Club and will definitely be missed. While we will miss Ryan and his “personality” in the Golf Shop, I want to wish him well in his new en-deavors.

Lastly, I would like to thank the membership for your con-tinued support of all our golf events and your support of the Golf Shop. I am continually striving to offer excellent golf tournaments and events to the membership, as well as offer-ing a well-stocked and professionally run Golf Shop. To help us continue to meet these goals, I would like to ask for your feedback as to what we can improve, what you like, and/or what you would like to see change in our golf opera-tion. Please feel free to contact me anytime here at the golf shop or by e-mail [email protected].

Thank you for your participation and I look forward to see-ing you this month at the club!

From the Tennis Courts Chris Dallas, Tennis Director

Holiday season is upon on us. Before we get into the holi-days, I want to thank the tennis players and the non-tennis players that came to the “Top Two” grand opening. We had a good time playing games and enjoying the beautiful weather. The Course Maintenance Team did some great work coming into the event to get the area around the courts looking as great as the new courts do.

The date for the CCP Fall Doubles Invitational has been rescheduled to Saturday, November 23rd. We have had some very good competition over the last few seasons with this event. Time to pick your partner for the member/guest style one-day doubles event. Ladies play in the morning and

Men play in the afternoon. We separate the two with some light hors d’oeuvres.

The annual Mix Mingle and Mimosas Holiday Tennis Mix-er is set for Saturday, December 7th. This has been a well-attended club favorite since it began. I expect a whole new level of competition in the “Ugly Sweater Contest”. Plan to come out and have a Holiday good time with some socializ-ing, some tennis and, some ugly sweaters.

Fall is in the air it is a great time to be out on a tennis court.

See you at the courts, Chris Dallas
