The Parable of the Prodigal Son in Laetare (Rejoice) Sunday!

By: Father Harold C. Prieto

This Fourth Sunday of Lent we reached the middle of this journey of Conversion. We rejoice because of the Hope of the Resurrection, the Hope that Christ has destroyed death for us. I hope the prodigal son reflects in our experience three important moments in regards to our sin.

The first moment the Son leaves his father. When we sin we consciously decide to follow our disordered passions and affections. We turn to the world and its allurements. We think we shall find life in them but what we experience is frustration and death.

The second moment is the right reason and conversion. The son remembers the joy, the good things and the life he had being with his Father. This is the moment when we realized that sin and our friendship with the things of the world do not give us life on the contrary it extracted our joy and peace. Then conversion happens which brings us to the Third Moment. A desire to return to the Lord, to go back to him. This is the moment when the Father forgets what the son has done and forgives him. He puts a ring on him and kills the fattened calf to make a feast because his son was lost and now is found. This moment is when confession happens. Whenever you go to confession you're not given a ring but a new life, you're not given a fattened calf but a heavenly feast of angels that rejoice that you who experience the world have been forgiven and that new life a new desire not to sin anymore is engraved in you heart. After this a new relationship with the Lord is opened in our path and we shall strive to preserve it because he has loved us sinners through his Son Jesus Christ.

What Does Laetare

Mean?

Laetare means "Rejoice" in Latin. The 40 days of Lent are a time for solemnity according to Roman Catholic doctrine, so how is it possible to celebrate during a time for meditative reflection? Quite simply, the church recognized that people need a break from sorrow. The fourth Sunday was considered a day of relaxation from the normal rigors of Lent. It was a day of hope with Easter within sight. During the celebration of mass, the priest may use a rose vestment on this day.

The Stations of the Cross explained

Stations of the Cross -- sometimes called Way of the Cross -- is a popular Lenten devotion that has very ancient roots. It was prayed by early Christian communities, especially in the fourth century, when the Roman Empire began to recognize Christianity. Oftentimes, people would make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to retrace Jesus' steps from his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane to being forced to carry the cross to the crucifixion site at Golgotha. Those who could not visit Jerusalem would use the community's churches and other buildings as "stations" that represented each stage of what happened to Jesus between his trial and his entombment. Groups would travel from station to station, remembering and praying at each one. The devotion gained even more popularity because it was prayed in the vernacular rather than in Latin, and people could understand what was going on. Eventually, individual churches erected plaques or other pictorial depictions of all the stations. Stations are usually hung separately, one by one, seven on each side of the church. The Way of the Cross traditionally consists of 14 iconic stations that depict the events of Jesus' journey to crucifixion. A 15th station, which is not depicted by an icon, is meant to remember Jesus' resurrection. The 14 traditional stations are: * Jesus is condemned to death * Jesus accepts the cross * Jesus falls for the first time * Jesus meets his sorrowing mother * Simon of Cyrene carries the cross for Jesus * Veronica wipes the face of Jesus * Jesus falls a second time * Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem * Jesus falls a third time * Jesus is stripped of his clothes * Jesus is nailed to the cross * Jesus dies on the cross * The body of Jesus is taken down from the cross * The body of Jesus is laid in the tomb When praying Stations of the Cross in church, either the entire assembly or just a small group of people move from station to station. The devotion begins with an opening prayer, usually at the foot of the altar. The song "Stabat Mater," or its tune set to different lyrics, is played. During the first part of the song, people move to the first station, where some sort of reverent gesture, such as genuflection, is made and a responsorial phrase is recited. The name of the station is announced, a reference to Scripture is read, and people kneel and say a prayer. This is done at all 14 stations, and when the procession returns to the altar, the 15th station is prayed there. The Stations of the Cross is prayed everyday before masses during the season of Lent here at the parish.
