Mission Statement of the Cathedral Parish St. Augustine, Florida

We are Christ’s eyes, ears, mouth, hands, and feet—sent out to do justice, especially for

the poor and oppressed, to minister to the needs of the community,

to be faithful stewards of God’s creation - awakening faith among the hopeless,

and promoting life even within the culture of death.

THE CATHEDRAL PARISH AND CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF SAINT AUGUSTINE ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 11, 2018

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Thanks to all who took part in our Parish Mission this

past week. There were certainly many gracious and complimentary comments from many of you. It is my prayer that the fruits of the Mission will continue to grow and nourish us for weeks and months to come.

Today is Pledge Sunday for the Bishop’s Annual Stewardship Appeal (BASA). This Appeal is one of the primary ways that Bishop Estévez is able to fund the needs of our diocesan family. This year the Appeal will fund five specific areas: Education for Seminarians, Catholic Charities, assistance to Catholic Schools, Evangelization efforts, and support for Senior Priests. The total goal for all the parishes of the Diocese is $3.5 million. While no specific financial goal has been set for our parish, the BASA Committee has asked that we set a goal of 400 families from the Cathedral Parish making a financial pledge/gift.

The Church to which we belong is much broader and larger than the Cathedral Parish and the institutions for which our parish is responsible. We are a Universal Church which includes all Catholic parishes, clergy and institutions of the 17-county area of the Diocese of St. Augustine. Your response to the Appeal allows the greater family that is the Catholic Church to respond to the needs of the many.

Love, Father Tom

Cathedral Parish Council meets Tuesday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m. You are welcome to join our Parish Council members as they meet with Fr. Tom and our clergy to discuss issues in our parish. The meeting will be held in the Bishop Baker Parish Center (next to Cathedral Parish School). Rite of Sending to be celebrated on February 18 at 9 a.m. Mass As the Church moves into the Season of Lent, we also begin to pre-pare for the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil for the catechu-mens. Along with them, we also assist the Candidates for Full Com-munion in their final preparations to receive the Sacraments of Pen-ance, Confirmation and Eucharist. The Rite of Sending will be celebrated for these members of our community on Sunday, Febru-ary 18 at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Rosina Patterson Memorial Scholarship offers assistance with St. Joseph Academy tuition Each year the Sisters of Saint Joseph provide scholarship opportuni-ties for students attending Saint Joseph Academy through the Rosi-na Patterson Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is based on financial need of the family to assist in providing tuition for their child(ren) attending Saint Joseph Academy. BEGINNING FEBRUARY 13 Join us for an inspiring video Bible study: The Bible and the Virgin Mary Discover how Catholic beliefs about Mary build on the Old Testament as well as the Gospels. Learn why the early church used titles like “New Eve” and “Ark of the New Covenant” for Mary. The study will be held on Tuesdays from 7-8 p.m. at St. Bene-dict the Moor Church, beginning Feb-

ruary 13. For more information, please contact Cheryl Kavanaugh, (904) 540-2565 or [email protected]. Respect Life meeting, February 13, 6 p.m. The Respect Life committee is committed to bringing the Gospel of Life through prayer, education and service to our parish communi-ty. The calligraphers and artists involved in the fifteen-year pro-cess of creating the first handwritten illuminated Bible in over 500 years faced many of the same challenges as the ancient Christian scribes who worked tirelessly to transmit the Word of God in text and image. The Saint John’s Bible volume will be on hand for view-ing. To RSVP, please contact Andrew Tierney by February 20 at (904) 824-2806 ext. 315, or email [email protected]. Living the Eucharist returns to the parish during Lent Living the Eucharist small groups will be returning! Stewardship reflection for the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Often one of our human weaknesses has to do with us believing or thinking we know better than God in relation to what we do and what we do in relation to others. Of course, part of that has to do with our failure to pray and consult the Lord, or even more to make no effort to understand what God may be telling us.

In today’s Gospel Reading from St. Mark, we hear about Jesus curing a leper. In His instructions to the cured man, He says, “See that you tell no one anything,” Of course, the man pays no atten-tion to this instruction from the Lord. Instead, “The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter.”

Surely the man meant well; in fact, he probably thought he was helping Jesus, but the reality as stated in the Gospel is that his diso-bedience hindered the ministry of Jesus, “so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly.” We need to obey the Lord, and we should never think we have a better plan than He does.

Even the eminent scientist Albert Einstein recognized how im-portant Jesus’ teachings are. Einstein said, “As a child I received instruction both in the Bible and in the Talmud. I am a Jew, but I am enthralled by the luminous figure of the Nazarene. No one can read the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus. His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filled with such life.”

A person who is concerned solely or primarily with possessing and enjoying, who is no longer able to control his instincts and

passions, or to subordinate them by obedience to the truth, cannot be free.

Interested in becoming an Annulment Companion? Training course begins February 24.

Marriage Annulments can be one of the most misunderstood aspects of life in the Catholic Church. However, because of the increase in divorces and remarriages, the Church must still pro-vide this ministry so that those who wish to remain “in commun-ion with the Church” are given every opportunity to do so. Par-ishes are asked to have lay people trained to be annulment companions. These companions assist those who need more information about the process to provide it, as well as working with individuals to file the necessary paperwork to advance the annulment petition. If you are interested in becoming an annul-ment companion, The Tribunal of the Diocese of St. Augustine will be offering a 4-week training course beginning February 24. Please contact our Pastor, Fr. Tom Willis, if you are interested in being considered for this program.

Last year, thanks to the community, we raised thousands of dollars for both Cathedral Parish School and Cathedral Parish Early Education Center through the Cathedral Festival. Please consider donating an item to contribute to our Silent Auction this year.
