Dear Edwards Church Community,

The conditions that awaited the first Christmas were not encouraging. When Jesus was born, there

was tension in the land. Different groups, easy to tell from one another, were afraid of each other. The rich and the poor were afraid of each other. The Gentiles and the Jews were afraid of each other.

Meanwhile the Romans built their empire by taking advantage of everyone they kept afraid. Something had to give.

It was hardly the atmosphere that would lead you to expect an infant Messiah, a Prince of Peace, Wonderful Counselor, or God-with-Us in Living Flesh. But those were the very conditions that required him, the same conditions that made so many ordinary people willing to become agents of the faith,

messengers of the hope, and carriers of the love born in Bethlehem.

When Jesus was born 2,000 years ago in desperate conditions, his

parents fled violence in one country and lived for years as refugees in another, until it was safe to go home. He took his inherited faith seriously,

and he refashioned it within the community that formed him, inviting all who would listen to participate in the new life he proclaimed.

We are the living agents of that same faith, the messengers of a

timeless hope, and the current carriers of an everlasting love. If the same Spirit that was born in a manager and revealed to the world through Jesus is

not shared with the world by us, then there is no Christmas joy.

This is the sacred story entrusted to every Christian. Jesus the Christ

is needed in the world, and Jesus the Christ can only be born again, and again, and again when we are open to the outrageous possibility that everything can change for the better – but only if we let it, starting with us.

Us as in each one of us and all of us together.

War can be reduced to the point that armed conflict begins to

disappear. Hunger and homelessness sent packing. The war economy. Poverty, childhood diseases, you name it. Christmas comes only once a year, and every day we let it.

Christmas is celebrated when we need it most, during the longest, coldest nights in our Northern hemisphere, and here at Edwards even in July. Christmas needs to happen whenever we encounter the conditions that cry out for the light and love of Christ.

Against all odds, we have the courage to sing in “O Little Town of Bethlehem”: How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of

his heaven. No ear may hear his coming but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him still, the dear Lord enters in.

Merry Christmas! May it last the whole year long, and may it fill your heart and the hearts of all whom you love, until they overflow with Joy to the World!

From the Minister of Faith Formation

Dear Beloved of God,

Advent – the journey to Bethlehem begins anew and so does the liturgical calendar of the church year. The

first Sunday of Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before December 25, which incidentally this year, is also

the beginning of Hanukkah. The liturgical color for the first, second, and fourth Sundays in this season is blue,

symbolizing royalty. The color for the third Sunday is pink honoring Mary and her song of joy – the

Magnificat. Themes of hope, peace, joy, and love are typically reflected in the weekly liturgies and serve to

remind us that through the Bethlehem babe, God birthed those themes as promises to a world waiting – and

many would say still waiting – in darkness for a new and just way of being.

Advent wreaths, devotionals, litanies, calendars, nativity scenes, Christmas trees, ornaments, Menorahs,

outdoor and indoor lights and decorations are all very popular. The Board of Faith Formation will make

Advent Calendar Cards available for families with young children.

Listed elsewhere in this edition of the Spire are many of the special offerings for this season. I hope you will

all be able to attend one or more of them. Our Sunday morning services on December 16, 23 will be

intergenerational. Child care will be provided for infants and children through grade 2.

Annual Christmas Pageant

Our annual intergenerational Christmas pageant will take place on Nativity Sunday, December 16 during worship. A

rehearsal will be held at 9:30 on Saturday, December 15. Sign – ups for narrators, angels, shepherds, and animals

around the manger will begin on November 25. Costume fittings will take place after worship on

December 9 as well as before and after the pageant rehearsal on December 15. Please see Deb Moore if your child or youth is interested in being part of the Christmas pageant.

Level 2 Racial Justice

Training A Level 2 Racial Justice Training will be held on January

19 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the Edwards Room. Participants need

have previously completed a Level 1 training. Please let Deb Moore

know if you would like to attend this training.

YOUTH GROUP Edwards Church Youth Group’s ministry is open to those in Grades 6 -12. We generally meet on the second and fourth Sunday of the month from 11:30-1:00 , with a few exceptions. Youth are always welcome to bring a friend!

December 9th – meeting from 11:30 – 1:00 to

decorate and pack cookies for our college students.

Labyrinth Ministry

We will celebrate the winter solstice with a labyrinth walk on Thursday,

Holyoke Civic Symphony Holiday Concert David Kidwell will conduct the Holyoke Civic Symphony in its

annual holiday concert on Sunday, December 9 at 3:00pm at Holyoke Community College. The concert is free, but donations are appreciated.

The program will include Beethoven’s Fidelio overture, the Poéme by

Ernest Chausson with violin soloist Ronald Gorevic, as well as Christmas

THE HOUSE THAT FAITH IS BUILDING - HABITAT UPDATE

This Christmas, Ruth, one of the prospective Habitat homeowners in the three house development

that includes our inter-faith team’s house, can look forward to living with her children in their own home

next year. “It’s been a long journey for us,” she says. “We’ve been trying so long to find a place to live.

I don’t want my kids jumping from an apartment to a shelter, from a shelter to another apartment, place

to place … and finally we are going to have a house! … We are just so hopeful and so thankful.”

Bonnie, another prospective new homeowner, says, “We’ve been having trouble finding stable

housing because of my husband’s health issues and our financial issues. I’m just so thankful as I hear of

the hordes of people who I don’t even know, who don’t even know me, who have put time, energy,

thought, care and love into this project … God is good! Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts!”

At Edwards Church, we are well on our way to meeting the internal goal of $3,000, which when

matched by the Trustees’ challenge grant, will be able to contribute a total of $6,000. That goes a long way toward Habitat’s need for $30,000 for one of these homes. Other houses of worship from the

Northampton area are also providing labor, feeding volunteers, and supporting the project financially too.

So far, gifts of approximately $1,800 have been delivered to the church office. Another $1,200 will

put us over the top. Will you consider making a gift of $20, $50, $100 or more? (Gifts to date have

ranged from $20 to $500.) The challenge grant is open until December 31, but we’ would love to deliver Edwards’ donation sooner.

Personal Reflections on Outreach and Stewardship from Jack Hjelt

Edwards has been good for me: a worship home, new friends, a wonderful choir that tolerates an aging baritone and challenging questions that feed my spiritual journey and reinforce social justice concerns. This year, Edwards has provided me with personal opportunities to study, witness and serve,

particularly with our White Privilege studies and the Circle of Care. Working with refugees reminds me of my need to confront racism that is deeply ingrained in our society and within me. The studies

and the Circle also expanded my contacts and relationships with other faith based social justice groups like the Pioneer Valley Refugee Action Group and the Sanctuary initiative.

It has also been a joy to serve on the Outreach Committee. Not only do I work with a remarkable group of spirited and spiritual people, but it has also connected this newcomer to wonderful programs that address social justice and community needs. This last year our committee undertook a serious

effort to discern the weight and importance of Edward’s contributions to grant recipients. We considered questions regarding program goals, budget, accountability, leadership, outcomes and

impact. The very wealth of well intended organizations and the resulting overlap requires a rigorous process to assure Outreach decisions reflect the values expressed in our Vision “to offer ourselves as

instruments of love and justice”. As Michael suggested last month, we can’t do it all, but we enhance our mission when we engage through the Outreach Committee or individually with the groups we support with gifts of our time and treasure. Outreach grants are wonderful, but personal engagement

has an additional reward: the mutual understanding that builds community.

Although Outreach had a rich and productive year, it didn’t exhaust all the issues related to our

mission. For example, how do we, as a congregation, begin to also work more upstream, supporting actions that address the causes of injustice and misery, not just the consequences. What risks might

we take to highlight or break new ground around the structural constraints that limit inclusiveness and contribute to poverty? Is there room to confront, explore and support more global or international

issues? From the depth of our inherited wealth, perhaps we have the leverage to help birth partnerships to address significant issues. We can’t do it alone, but we could be an important catalyst.

I end this year with a thankful heart for new friends, for new challenges and for the work of this church in God’s world. I am grateful for efforts of this congregation as we all support and challenge ourselves to be open to new ways to be “instruments of love and justice”.

otherwise support Team Edwards as we raise funds for Safe Passage.

Sing for Shelter

The Sing for Shelter program features local choral groups singing Christmas carols in downtown

Northampton and collecting donations for the interfaith cot shelter. This year Edwards Church has been invited to sing alongside the Pioneer Valley Symphony Chorus, conducted by Gregory Brown.

Anyone interested in singing should meet on the steps of the Northampton City Hall on Saturday, December 8 at 4:00pm.

Festival of Lessons and Carols

The Edwards Church Choir will present its annual Festival of

Lessons and Carols during the morning worship service on Sunday,

December 23 at 10:00am. Following the traditional format popularized

by King’s College in Cambridge, England, readings from the King

James Version of the Bible alternate with English Christmas carols sung

by the choir and congregation. Don’t miss this very special and

meaningful service.

SNOW/INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

When storms of any kind occur it can raise the question whether we will be having our customary Sunday service or other events at that church. In the absence of a cancellation announcement, one should assume that the service or other event is being held. Cancellation announcements would typically include listing the cancellation with local news outlets (e.g., ABC 40 / FOX 6 or WWLP), and posting to the church web site and Facebook page. When in doubt, try calling the church to ask. Concern for personal safety should always come first, so even if there is no cancellation announcement, please stay home if you have any doubt.

New Way Fund

We are truly blessed! Pending the success of Edwards Church stewardship drive in support of our 2019

annual budget, we are expected to have approximately $70,000 available for application to new, meaningful projects in 2019 through a "New Way Fund" from which we would allocate 25% each to “In-reach Projects,” “Community Funds” (i.e. Out-reach), and “Capital Improvements.” The

remaining funds will remain flexible. The New Way Committee recommends that the funds be used to make substantial impact rather than being divided into numerous smaller amounts.

During 2019, the first year of the existence of the New Way Fund, the Capital Improvements portion

may be used, in part, to finance a professional survey of Edwards Church engineering systems to provide a basis for planned maintenance and replacement.

Currently, the New Way Committee is 1) discussing how to structure decision-making, 2) establishing a process for the allocation of the funds and 3) brainstorming ideas for the In-reach and Community

projects. Ideas like the following have emerged as possible projects to fund: higher education scholarships for Edwards Church members; Christian summer camp scholarships; a guest speaker

series; and development of a women’s shelter in Northampton. A survey of church members for funding ideas is being planned in conjunction with our congregational

Annual Meeting, but please share your ideas with New Way Committee members anytime: Paul Bertram, Shauneen Kroll, Ruth Griggs, Elena Frogameni, Jim Cope, Jeanne Kocsis, Deb Moore and

Floyd Cheung.

DRAFT Edwards Church Council Minutes

November 14, 2018

Council Members Attending: Leon Drzewianowski (Moderator), Jim Stokes-Buckles (Outreach), Janet Tucker (Deacons), Nancy Flickinger (Music), Carl Erickson (At-Large), Jon Dietrich (Trustees),

Leon called the meeting to order at 7:05pm and led an opening prayer.

Minutes of the last meeting were accepted without correction.

Joys and concerns:

Heather worked extra time on Friday to make sure the electrical panels got completed. She

also did a lot of legwork with our computer consultant. She’s been going above and beyond. The Holyoke Symphony Orchestra rehearsed in Addis Hall, led masterfully by David. It was a

pleasure to hear. Seven youth received Bibles on Reformation Sunday.

Several youth made sandwiches and brownies last Sunday for Cathedral in the Night. Committee Minutes

Trustees are still looking into the idea of a sign on the State Street side of the church. The exterior light above the back door has been out for a while and Trustees are asked to fix

that as soon as possible. The wood paneling under the lectern is stained with water and Trustees are asked to follow up

on it. Jim will follow up on the church’s recurring ad in the newspaper, regarding the style of the

page it’s on.

There was discussion of how Music at the Crossroads can encourage organizations to send representatives to speak at the event and to help promote the event.

Nursery Coverage:

Kelly St. Martin has been hired as our new permanent nursery care provider. Chelsea will continue to serve as backup when needed.

Nominating Committee for 2019 Nominating Committee asks that committees seek to recruit people to serve on them, and

communicate those recruitments to Carl. Committees are encouraged to recruit members for whatever length of time the members are

willing to serve, even if it is shorter than the traditional two-year term. There was discussion about the structure of the boards and committees and the ongoing

difficulty of filling the positions as described in the bylaws. One proposal is to ask the Annual

Meeting to suspend the portion of the bylaws that describes the board and committee structure. Leon will follow up with Janet Tucker about crafting such a proposal.

New Way Committee Council reviewed the committee’s charge. Leon will follow up with the committee regarding

their progress toward their goals. (continued on next page)

Status of Building Projects Jon provided some updates about building projects. Refer to Trustees minutes for more

information. Jon will check into the pothole in Button Alley which has gotten to be a hazard.

Jon will check with the Sangha group about the storage location of their materials.

Advent Dinner Deacons need help with the Advent dinner on December 1st. Carl will look into paying a

couple of folks a stipend to help out with cleanup. (The Downtown Stroll is that night and

Edwards will be open to the public this year for tree trimming and snacks.) Jim will work with Scott on recruiting people to put up the Christmas tree on 11/25.

There was a suggestion to invite members to contribute new ornaments for the Christmas tree, and perhaps to take away older ornaments that are important to them.

The next council meeting will be held on December 12, 2018, at 7:00pm.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40pm.

Fellowship Time is Busy!

Hello Edwards Church! Here’s another friendly reminder

about the after-church fellowship hour, which has been well-

attended this spring. Everything is there: Good company, a

watchful deacon, hot coffee and tea, and – well, usually tasty

snacks. But not always. Once in a while we have a pretty lean

Sunday, hence this appeal. Please, when you get that gentle

reminder that your alphabet group comes up, consider bringing

a little something. Lots of littles add up to a generous and

welcoming table.
