TOS Newsletter January 2018 Greetings All, I hope everyone has survived the recent winter weather and your Orchids made it through unscathed. I know of at least one member that had a prolonged power outage and lost several plants, here’s hoping he was the only one. Speaking of the weather it has pushed construction at the Gardens behind so we will be meeting in the Holly room in Baker Hall for one more meeting. We were able reschedule last month’s speaker (Linda Wilhelm) for the November meeting and this month we are having a panel of some of TOS’s expert growers to answer your questions. Hopefully this will be a learning experience for the entire membership so bring your questions and problems and try to stump the experts. I want to thank Frank Drew, Bert Bennett, and Becky Tupper for braving this second snow storm to put in a display at the Virginia Orchid Society’s show in Richmond. The display was apparently successful and many ribbons were won (see the details below). During this month we lost one of our long-time members, Tom Ward. Tom was a past president of the Society and was a driving force for our bid to host the 2000 EOC and AOS Trustees meeting. Tom taught the beginners class when I first joined the Society and I considered him a friend and mentor. He was very helpful with the Merritt Huntington Symposium until he became ill and could no longer attend. He was also a Senior AOS Judge working out of the National Capital Judging Center and recognizing this, the Board has decided to donate money to the Judging center in Tom’s name. 2017-2018 Officers President ……………………….…. TOS Newsletter January 2018

Greetings All,

I hope everyone has survived the recent winter weather and your Orchids made it through unscathed.

This month’s program is all about Tidewater Orchid Culture. You have probably noticed that some of our members have great success growing specific kinds of orchids – Cattleyas, Paphs., Dendrobiums, Catasetums and others – and they have agreed to share their tips ‘n’ tricks with all of us. Bring your questions, bring any “problem” plants you might have, and join us for an informative, fun afternoon. There will be plants for sale too!

Ellen Hansen’s first two orchids purchased in full bloom from Orchid Classics almost 3 years ago are finally blooming for her for the first time (She had to learn to give them a slight chill in the Fall). They summered outside with beast-mode growth in the heat and humidity. The white one's flowers have a beautiful crystalline texture and slight pink tinge, hard to capture in this picture.
