FROM THE HELM

I believe the end of our closure is in sight! In this world of ever-changing governmental rules and regulations the status of Fayerweather seems to be improving everyday now. In just the last ten minutes I have learned that the state has raised social gathering limits to 25 people with the same social distancing

requirements still in force. Hopefully the City of Bridgeport will follow suit quickly. But, as of right now the rules that are in place at Fayerweather as we move towards reopening are as follows:

RULES for coming to the Club – as of May 29, 2020

• Members must have a mask with them when you enter the grounds. We know you will act in a safe and respectful manner assuring your own safety and that of others.

• Normal social distancing rules established by the state are in order. Please keep your mask on when near people and you must have it on if you are within 6 feet of each other.

• Members are allowed to sit in groups not exceeding five people while maintaining the six-foot social distancing.

• Family units that live together may sit within the six-foot social distance restriction and they may invite one guest, but not to exceed a group of 5 people.

• You may sit on your own chairs in all of the club areas now. • We expect a limited number of tables and chairs to be put out for your use shortly • Members may bring your own food and beverage, when the bar is closed – please

dispose of them at home

Regarding the Bar

On May 18th the Governor released Executive order 7PP which allows us to open the bar for the limited sale of Alcohol and Food outside. We are currently in the process of obtaining authorization but do not know how long the process will take nor how many people we will be able to serve.

Regarding Bathrooms – open as of Saturday, May 30, 2020

These rules have been established in accordance with the Connecticut Health Department requirements and must be adhered to.

• Enter restrooms from rear door under the awning. • Exit through the side door through the Penfield Room. Follow arrows taped on the

floor guiding you to the restrooms and the exit. You must absolutely wear a mask when you enter the clubhouse and keep it on until you have used the bathroom and vacated the building.

• You must not congregate, nor pause in the building, nor use anything in the building other than the restrooms.

• The restrooms will be cleaned every night by the cleaning company and several times a day by staff, but in between those cleanings you will be using the bathrooms at your own risk. We expect you will wash your hands upon entering the restrooms and wash your hands before you leave. We will have wastebaskets inside the restrooms as usual and outside the restrooms for you to discard paper towels. We will have hand sanitizer out, but we recommend you bring your own hand sanitizer with you just in case.

• Again, do not enter the Clubhouse nor the restrooms without a mask on.

NEXT STEPS:

The state is formulating our ‘next steps’ for our expanded ability to reopen on June 20 – stay tuned!!!

In the meantime, the Board has been very busy! When you do venture to the Club, you will see that it doesn’t look the same as it did last fall.

• Gas tank replaced and gas sales began over Memorial Day weekend • A new driveway and paved area to the rear of the club • A new lawn – seeded and sod put down • Power washing was completed • The exterior of the Clubhouse has been repainted: it looks brand NEW!! • The awning over the rear deck is new. It blew down in one of the noreasters during the early spring. • The Brewster Street fence will be replaced shortly with a new black vinyl covered chain link scheduled for 2

weeks from now.

Other Notes • Moorings are in • Members are sailing and fishing • We are we planning an outdoor General Membership Meeting on June 2 for the sole purpose of voting in up

to 13 new applicants via a drive by voting method between 7PM and 7:30 PM. Separate instructions are being sent to you.

Stay Tuned for the EVER CHANGING Can’t wait to see you all! Andrew Cross, Commodore

Auxiliary Corner On May 6, the Executive board informally met during a Zoom meeting. It was nice to connect with the board members after two months! We did manage to get some business done. We decided we would not be renting the palm trees this year. We considered other landscaping options but decided to table it until 2021. Our June membership meeting will be canceled. It would have been our last meeting, enjoying a Pot Luck dinner, but alas, we need to cancel. Let's hope we will be able to meet again in September, even if it is six feet apart! Until September... Enjoy your summer! And stay healthy! Debbi Rosati President

Sailing Corner With the Sailing season upon we are planning to start the Wednesday

Night Racing series (“WNR”) June 10th. The regatta series as well as the crew limitations will be dependent on the state restrictions for social distancing. The current state of CT protocol is a maximum of 5 people may be in one group. FYC will follow the general guidelines and social protocol outlined by the YRALIS and US Sailing for running regattas. As it may be difficult to put a full crew together, we are working on the idea of running fun crewed races to until July 8th, Wednesday Night Lite (“WNL”) cutting

the WNR season in half. From June 10th to June 1st we would run a series of races, that would not count towards the overall season. Then on July 8th, we would start the official WNR series, with all races form July 8th to September 9th recorded.

Below are the “suggested” protocols from US Sailing and YRALIS. Captain and Crew responsibilities

• rush hour arrival protocols • maintaining distance on ramp and dock • limit shared gear/clothing • masks on launch - yes • masks onboard – Skippers responsibility

Race Committee modifications • limit # aboard the Donahue to 2 • ollie - no • re-thinking rotation of volunteer assignments • use of chase boat • Protests moved to Zoom format - allowances

on timing As the state modifies pandemic protocol, we will update our schedule on sailing. I encourage you to email me with any comments and suggestions.

Registering your boat for Regattas Please register on Yachtscoring.com 2020 Black Rock Harbor Wednesday Night Series https://yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=12935 Skippers meeting - June 3rd please look out for an email announcement with the “Zoom” meeting instructions. All are welcome to sail WNR. It is a great way to improve your boat handling and meet other sailors at the club. Beginners are welcome and encouraged. To be scored in WNR you must have a YRALIS PHRF certificate. PHRF Certificates The certificate process for most boats is very simple. Fill out the form on the organization’s website. Most of the information for your boat can be found on the manufacturer’s webs site. here are handicaps +/- for roller furling, Genoa size as well as other modifications. The regulatory organization ECSA or YRA will determine your PHRF rating once the form is completed. Below are the web sites for each organization. ECSA: http://ecsa.net/ (opens for registration in March) YRA: https://www.yralis.org/ Ladies Sailing We are scheduling two Ladies sailing events this year and are starting to plan other activities.

• Friday July 24th, Women’s Skipper event at BRYC, All FYC skippers and boats are invited to this fun event. It is a casual race event, for all boats, the only requirement is that the skipper must be a Lady.

• Ladies Big Boat Program – more on that in the next issue

Fleet Captain’s Corner:

The subject matter for this month is RAFTING OF BOATS, which we will put in – in hopes that the social distancing issues abate this summer!! Rafting boats that are similar in size and design is not a difficult thing to do. However, if you are rafting with dissimilar sizes and types, things get a bit more complex. Let's take the easy way initially and then move on to the more difficult. Powerboats rafting to powerboats will use the same overall system as sailboats: the boat that is properly anchored invites the friend to come alongside. The bowline of the visiting vessel is thrown to the already anchored boat. This is a courtesy thing. It is important to make this line fast but not tight. In our case at hand, the host vessel is to port of the visiting vessel. On the stern we make an "X" with two lines. This is the complex part and somewhat difficult to put to paper. From the host's starboard stern cleat, the line goes forward some five or six feet to a cleat (or other strongly attached fixed point) on the port side of the visitor. From the visitor's port side at the stern, another line goes forward to the host's starboard side, again to a strong and well-fixed point, be it a cleat or winch. Thus we have the "X" of which we spoke. This method precludes the boats going forward and backward to an extreme that normally would occur if we had lines running all the way from the stern of each boat to the bow of the other. This keeps, if you will, the raft stable. In a two sailboat situation, great care must be taken during the set-up process to make certain that the spreaders do not come close ... the adjustability of the "X" controls this. When the stern lines are in place, it's time to adjust the bow line which simply runs from boat to boat ... not overly tight. It is recommended that nylon line be used both on the bow and in the stern...thus we have flexibility and avoid shock loads. The larger the fenders the better ... at least three 'tween boats would be best. The height of the fenders will be different than when we are landing at a dock; you may find that your best solution to the height question is to have them somewhat higher than normal. (Cont.)….. Rafting a powerboat to a sailboat is only made complex by the size differential of the topsides and the flair of the powerboat's topsides. It can be nicely done however, by using the same procedure only exercising much more care as to the line placement. If necessary due to weather factors present or shortly to come upon the raft-up, the visiting vessel may want to put out its own anchor for additional security. This anchor should be placed at a ninety-degree angle to the host's anchor. Again, scope should be seventy feet or close to it. That way when the raft breaks up, the visiting vessel can just release the lines and slowly drift apart, moving away from the host vessel and still be safely held by its own anchor. Rafting at night requires more attention during the 'wee' hours than at daytime. This is why we are here...to have a legitimate reason to interrupt our sleep at the most ungodly hours. Fishing Corner:

June ’20 - Fishing Report

You wanted the BEST, you got the BEST. FYC Fishing has had a very active quarantine. Thank you to everyone that came down for the Mother’s Day curbside brunch! We did about 180 meals to go. 100 were sponsored from local Black Rock folks and our Commodore and went to Bridgeport Hospital to the staff. Everything worked out super even with snow squalls the day before. So many people to thank for cooking and making this a success, Mark, Jerry, Steve, Pat, Ricky, Deb, Kim, Andrew, BOG, and many more. The FYC Fishing Annual fishing contest has been open for entry and believe it or not the fishing board is slowly filling up too. So far we have 3 blackfish weighed in and 1 seabass. I’ll figure out a virtual board but here it is for now. Species 1st 2nd 3rd Blackfish 6.87 Mike V. 4.51 Keith J. 4.08 Larry P. Black Sea bass 2.86 Keith J. We have about 15 members signed up and we are accepting virtual entries at [email protected]. To enter send an email to [email protected] and include your name and “I’m in!”. I will reply as acceptance. With your entry you agree to the $25 entry fee payable at the bar when the club is open and will receive the 2020 pin. While the club is closed you can weight in fish at any tackle shop with a digital scale, take a picture of your fish and the scale and that is an acceptable entry. Please tell all our fellow member fisherman. There is a new tackle shop Black Rock Bait and Tackle on Fairfield, Ave. They have a digital scale and can provide weigh-in while we are closed. Go see Ryan and Rich and support these guys and other local businesses too! We will have a kids fishing board this year too. $10 entry, weigh in anything they catch and take a picture, there will be prizes too, more details to follow. Same deal send an email to [email protected] to entry and square up at bar and get a pin when we open. Registration is open now. We hope to host some of our usual events later this year but not sure what the future holds for now. We are thinking of some other fun ideas as well. Attached are some pictures of our fishing adventures during the quarantine all with social distancing and the new rules. Send any of your pics you would like to share to [email protected] and we’ll share in the Foghorn and some of our social channels too. Stay safe and see you all soon! All fisherman are liars, expect you and me. And I’m not so sure about you!
