This quarter’s tech article is based upon the installation of the AutoMeter gauges Danchuk now offers. Since it involves intensive modifica-tions to the wiring (and possibly even the re-placement of the sending unit), we recommend that you consider using a qualified technician if you aren’t that experienced with your cars’ wiring. As usual, we’ve divided the article into three parts: removal of the old instrument clus-ter, assembly of the new AutoMeter gauges, and finally the installation of the new gauges in the dash. Keep in mind that some of these steps are quite involved, so please be sure to completely read the article before starting.

Removal of Old Instrument Cluster:1. Disconnect the battery.2. If you have an original 1955 temperature gauge, you must undo or cut the capillary tube from the intake manifold.3. Remove the steering wheel using a steering wheel puller. This is optional, you can leave the steering wheel on, but it gets in the way.4. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the backside of the speedometer by reaching underneath the dash. Use the flashlight to see where you have to disconnect it.5. Remove bottom chrome bezel with the 5/32”

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonder-full and safe holiday season. We had a great, but busy season here at Danchuk with all the festivities the holidays bring.

Our annual holiday sale was a success and kept us bustling right through to the New Year. Thank you! Also, those of you that have been custom-ers for years may have noticed that we never, not once, slipped from our 24-hour shipping goal during the sale, our busiest time of the year. In previous years, we sometimes slipped to 36 or 48 hours when things were at their craziest. Well, we are now confident that those days are gone. With a great shipping crew and our new computer system, all orders should be shipped within 24 hours.

2002 turned out to be a very busy year. We worked all year on new projects, and are happy to say that many are only weeks away from comple-tion. Our first group of new and improved parts debuts here, on page 5. But, these are just a drop in the bucket compared to what is to come in the near future.

Also, we are extremely excited to announce that we will be bigger than ever at the upcoming 2003 shows. Thanks to Dale Keesee and his overly ambitious goal to be the best, we will be debuting a monster of a show rig with upgraded displays this spring.

Step By Step Instructions for installing Autometer gauges

down for more clearance to pull the cluster out.9. Remove the 2 upper screws and the 2 lower screws of the cluster.10. Before you pull the cluster out, cover the column tube, with tape or a rag of some kind, so that the cluster doesn’t scratch the paint when you remove it.11. Pull the cluster out. You may have to jiggle it free to loosen it. Pull it forward just enough to get your hand behind it to unhook any wires

still attached.12. After you’ve removed the cluster, lay it face down so you can disassemble it by removing the outer edge screws.

Assembly of the new AutoMeter Gauges:1. Remove all the gauges and instrument cluster face from the packaging. Lay items on a table and mark each bag of hardware that the gauges come in. This will make it easier to

identify which bag goes with which cluster.

2.On the face plate, install the small lights with wires in the holes. The top two small holes are for the green lights (turn signals) and the bot-tom is for the red (bright lights).

3. Lay the polished face plate down on a soft towel and install the gauges in its holes. You may put the smaller gauges in any holes you

would like. There is no set way for this.4. After you have them set in, take the backing plate from the face plate and install very care-fully over the gauges while pulling the wiring

through the proper holes. 5. Take the four Phillips head screws and install them to the back. Snug down but do not tighten. Leave the screws loose enough so that you can twist the gauges to line them up properly. Once you have them set where you want them, turn the assembly back over and

tighten the screws down.6. Now take your existing chrome instrument cluster bezel and install the new gauge pack-age to it, from the back side. As you have it set in there, take the four tabs with holes in them and attach them to the backsides using your existing slotted screws from your bezel. Next, trim off the excess

tabs with the tin snips.7. Your finished instrument cluster should look like this when done. *Note: Look at your trans-mission indicator needle, you may wish to paint the background space black, just like it was in the original space.8. This is where the hard part comes into play! Before putting the gauge cluster back into the dash, first completely remove the speedometer cable from the car. 9. Install the new speedometer sending unit with wires to your transmission. Because in-stallation can be tricky, please read instructions carefully before attempting.10. Next, replace your oil sender with the one that is provided and also install the new water sender unit to your heads or intake manifold. Remember, read instructions before you try this!11. You now have to determine how to attach all the wiring to your gauges. You may modify your old wiring or you can purchase the com-plete wiring harness, part #11203.

Installing AutoMeter Gauges back into dash:1. After you have all your wiring together, put a towel or soft cloth on the steering column to prevent from scratching your steering column tube.

2. Lay the new gauge cluster on top of the column and hold with one hand. Now, the other hand will be used for attaching the cor-rect wires to the new gauges. Do not use your speedometer cable, you must remove it from your car. Your speedometer cluster is now all electronic. Take your time in order to make sure all wiring is done correctly.

3. After all the wires are hooked up, install your cluster into the dash. Install one screw on the upper part to hold it in place. Now would be a good time to start your car, in order to make sure the gauges work. If you have to fix the wire connections, it will be easy to remove your cluster.

4. After all wiring is working correctly, finish installing the upper instrument cluster screws. Then install the lower cluster screws that at-

tach the bezel to the dash. 5. Now install the shift indicator wire and the lower U-shaped bracket holding the steering column to the dash.6. After everything is in its place and tightened, install both front and bottom chrome covers. 7. And last, but certainly not least, install the

steering wheel.

Important note: YOU MUST CALIBRATE YOUR SPEEDOMETER! Read your speedometer manual for calibration instructions.

Again,we want to stress that to do the job right you must take your time. Also some of these steps can be quite involved, so if you’re not familiar with what we’re referring to, you may want to consider seeking qualified help.
